Reproductive health and pregnancy outcomes among French gulf war veterans.

BACKGROUND: Since 1993, many studies on the health of Persian Gulf War veterans (PGWVs) have been undertaken. Some authors have concluded that an association exists between Gulf War service and reported infertility or miscarriage, but that effects on PGWV's children were limited. The present study's objective was to describe the reproductive outcome and health of offspring of French Gulf War veterans. METHODS: The French Study on the Persian Gulf War (PGW) and its Health Consequences is an exhaustive cross-sectional study on all French PGWVs conducted from 2002 to 2004. Data were collected by

Long-term 3D culture of human cumulus granulosa cell spheroids in PEGylated fibrin: a preclinical model for reproduction and ovarian research.

BACKGROUND: Cumulus granulosa cells (CGCs) are essential for oocyte support, metabolic cooperation, and steroidogenesis, yet they deteriorate rapidly in conventional 2D culture, limiting long-term studies of these human ovarian somatic cells. Existing 3D systems rarely focus specifically on CGCs or sustain their function over extended periods. Here we developed a novel hCGC spheroid model encapsulated in PEGylated fibrin hydrogel, a stable, ovarian tissue-like biomaterial, to sustain viability, architecture, and endocrine activity over 30 days, providing a preclinical somatic platform for ovar

Living with one: Mental health, body image and fertility concerns after orchiectomy for testicular torsion.

OBJECTIVE: Testicular torsion in childhood and adolescence is a urological emergency that may necessitate orchiectomy. The long-term impact of orchiectomy on psychological well-being, body image, and fertility concerns remains poorly defined. This study aimed to evaluate the psychosocial and sexual consequences of orchiectomy following torsion, compared with patients who underwent orchiopexy alone. METHODS: A retrospective single-center study included 54 men, who underwent surgery for torsion between 2013 and 2023. Participants were healthy, with no prior psychiatric history. Validated questi

Vitamin D deficiency in a subfertility population and the impact of COVID-19 lockdowns.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the burden of vitamin D deficiency in female patients attending a fertility clinic in a tertiary referral center, assess temporal trends-including the potential impact of COVID-19 lockdowns-and explore socioeconomic disparities in vitamin D levels. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed vitamin D measurements from 765 female patients (mean age 35.7 ± 5.8 years) attending a fertility clinic between March 2010 and May 2022. Vitamin D status was categorized as deficient (<30 nmol/L), insufficient (30-50 nmol/L), or normal (>50 nmol/L). Comparative analyses exami

The association of infertility, miscarriage, stillbirth, and parity with osteoporosis: a pooled analysis of five cohort studies.

OBJECTIVE: To test, among women with natural menopause, whether: infertility, miscarriage, stillbirth, and low parity are associated with a higher risk of osteoporosis; menopause age can partly explain their associations. DESIGN: Pooled analysis of five retrospective and prospective cohorts within the International Collaboration for a Life Course Approach to Reproductive Health and Chronic Disease Events. SUBJECTS: A total of 141,222 naturally postmenopausal women with data on fertility factors (i.e., infertility, miscarriage, stillbirth, or parity), osteoporosis, and covariates (i.e., race,

Self-Reported Race/Ethnicity Is Not Associated with Abnormal Semen Parameters after Accounting for Body Mass Index and Socioeconomic Status.

PURPOSE: We evaluated whether consideration of body mass index (BMI) and socioeconomic status alters the reported association between race/ethnicity and abnormal semen parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of all men who underwent semen analysis (SA) for fertility evaluation at an integrated academic health care system from 2002 to 2021. Men were excluded if they had a diagnosis of Klinefelter's syndrome, history of varicocele, prior testicular surgery, prior history of chemotherapy or radiation for cancer, or prior testosterone-modulating medication use. A Stalled Revolution? Misoprostol and the Pharmaceuticalization of Reproductive Health in Francophone Africa.

Misoprostol entered the global market under the name Cytotec in the mid-1980s for the treatment of gastric ulcers. Decades of research have since demonstrated the safety and effectiveness of off-label use of misoprostol as a uterotonic in pregnant women to prevent and treat post-partum hemorrhage, treat incomplete abortion, or terminate first-trimester pregnancy. Global health experts emphasize misoprostol's potential to revolutionize access to reproductive health care in developing countries. Misoprostol does not require refrigeration, can be self-administered or with the aid of a non-physici

Studies on psychosomatic implications of infertility--effects of emotional stress on fertilization and implantation in in-vitro fertilization.

A case report shows the long and stony path of a couple who had to go through eight attempts at IVF in 4 years until the desired child was achieved. The psychosomatic implications of the various 'failures' of treatment become clearer when compared with the results of a psycho-endocrinological questionnaire completed by 551 patients and 115 controls since 1982. This questionnaire contains among others the Giessen personality test for the image of self, mother and father, a somatic complaints score to evaluate the severity of autonomic disorders, items for the presence and severity of possible g

Dimorphic enantiostyly and its function for pollination by carpenter bees in a pollen-rewarding Caribbean bloodwort.

PREMISE: Flowers that present their anthers and stigma in close proximity can achieve precise animal-mediated pollen transfer, but risk self-pollination. One evolutionary solution is reciprocal herkogamy. Reciprocity of anther and style positions among different plants (i.e., a genetic dimorphism) is common in distylous plants, but very rare in enantiostylous plants. We investigated the pollination and reproductive system of the enantiostylous Caribbean plant Cubanicula xanthorrhizos (Haemodoraceae). METHODS: We assessed stylar orientation of flowers and conducted controlled pollination exper

OIP5 Interacts with NCK2 to Mediate Human Spermatogonial Stem Cell Self-Renewal and Apoptosis through Cell Cyclins and Cycle Progression and Its Abnormality Is Correlated with Male Infertility.

Spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) have important applications in both reproduction and regenerative medicine. Nevertheless, specific genes and signaling transduction pathways in mediating fate decisions of human SSCs remain elusive. Here, we have demonstrated for the first time that OIP5 (Opa interacting protein 5) controlled the self-renewal and apoptosis of human SSCs. RNA sequencing identified that NCK2 was a target for OIP5 in human SSCs, and interestingly, OIP5 could interact with NCK2 as shown by Co-IP (co-immunoprecipitation), IP-MS (mass spectrometry), and GST pulldown assays. NCK2 sile

Reproductive Biology of Rheum webbianum Royle, a Vulnerable Medicinal Herb From Alpines of North-Western Himalaya.

Information on reproductive biology and pollination ecology studies of threatened plants are essential to develop strategies for their sustainable utilization and effective conservation. As such, these studies were conducted on Rheum webbianum, a high-value "vulnerable" medicinal herb of the north-western Himalaya. This species presents a unique mode of reproductive behavior through the involvement of different floral events, including the movement of reproductive organs. The plants survive extremely cold conditions through underground perennating rhizomes that sprout into juvenile shoots with

Burden of injury along the development spectrum: associations between the Socio-demographic Index and disability-adjusted life year estimates from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017.

BACKGROUND: The epidemiological transition of non-communicable diseases replacing infectious diseases as the main contributors to disease burden has been well documented in global health literature. Less focus, however, has been given to the relationship between sociodemographic changes and injury. The aim of this study was to examine the association between disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) from injury for 195 countries and territories at different levels along the development spectrum between 1990 and 2017 based on the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2017 estimates. METHODS: Injury mort

Pregnancy intention and use of contraception among Hispanic women in the United States: data from the National Survey of Family Growth, 2006-2010.

BACKGROUND: Both unintended and adolescent childbearing disproportionately impact the Hispanic population of the United States. METHODS: We used the 2006-2010 National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) to provide the most recent, nationally representative description of pregnancy, childbearing, and contraception for Hispanic females aged 15-44. We determined baseline fertility data for self-identified Hispanic female respondents. Among those reporting a pregnancy history, we calculated the proportion of pregnancies identified as unintended and their association with sociodemographic variables. W

Socioeconomic Characteristics, Lifestyle Behaviors, and Health Conditions Among Males of Reproductive Age With and Without Disabilities, NHANES 2013-2018.

Health status during the reproductive years influences fecundity, fertility, and the future health of males and their offspring. There remains a dearth of literature examining men's preconception health, especially among high-risk populations, such as those with disabilities. The objective of this study was to examine indicators of preconception health, including chronic medical conditions, lifestyle behaviors, and health care utilization, among males of reproductive age with and without disabilities in the United States. Data were from 3,702 males of reproductive age (18-44 years) who partici
