Twenty-one strains of Cryptococcus neoformans isolated from patients in Taiwan were characterized for serotypes and mating types. Slide agglutination test was performed with 8 factor-specific sera (Iatron Company, Japan) to determine the serotypes. Strains of Listeria monocytogenes serotype 4b account for a large fraction of sporadic listeriosis cases, as well as all major food-borne epidemics attributed to this pathogen. The increasing incidence of reported scabies in Trinidad, from 24.2/100,000 population in 1984 to 59.5/100,000 in 1985, led to a careful monitoring in 1986 of all patients with post-streptococcal acute glomerulonephritis (PSAGN). From 1979 to August 1987, there have been 178 cases of meningococcal disease in Iquique, Chile, a city of about 140,000. The attack rate for the last 5 years has been in excess of 20/100,000 per year, more than 20 times greater than for the country overall. The mortality rate was 6%. Acute meningococcemia is a dramatic clinical syndrome from infection with the gram-negative diplococcus, Neisseria meningitidis. Although pericarditis may complicate the course of meningococcemia, it is distinctly unusual as a presenting sign. A case of disseminated meningococcemia presenting as acute myopericarditis is reported. The serotype isolated, type W135, was a sporadic cause of N. meningitidis in the Boston area. Although the patient had meningitis, bacteremia, and myopericarditis, his course was uncomplicated with early institution of antibiotic therapy.

Twenty Mycobacterium avium/intracellulare strains of diverse origins and two reference strains of each of Schaefer's serotypes 1-21 were examined by immunodiffusion analysis. A total of 229 clinical isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae recovered from 225 patients were serotyped and tested for susceptibility to penicillin G, ampicillin, mezlocillin, cefazolin, erythromycin, clindamycin, chloramphenicol, and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim. Vibrio cholerae serotypes other than I have come to be recognised as an important aetiological agent of choleraic diarrhoea and a few of them have been shown to ben enterotoxigenic in experimental models.
