We examined the most effective method of boar exposure for the attainment of puberty in 89 gilts. At 160 days of age, we allocated gilts to daily direct contact with a vasectomized boar after movement of pen groups of gilts to a detection-mating area (DGB: n = 30); daily direct contact with boars in the gilt home pens (DBG: n = 31); or daily fenceline contact between boars and gilts housed in individual gilt stalls (FBG: n = 28). Precocious puberty is an early sexual maturation before the age of 8 in case of girls and 9 in boys. This experiment evaluated growth, physiological responses, and puberty attainment in heifers reared in drylots with different stocking densities. A total of 240 heifers (75% Angus × 25% Brahman) were used. INTRODUCTION: The onset of puberty is associated with a shift in the circadian timing of sleep, leading to delayed sleep initiation [i.e., later sleep onset time (SOT)] due to later bedtimes and/or longer sleep onset latency (SOL). Several genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified genes that may be involved in the etiology of sleep phenotypes. However, circadian rhythms are also epigenetically regulated; therefore, epigenetic biomarkers may provide insight into the physiology of the pubertal sleep onset shift and the pathophysiology of prolonged or delayed sleep initiation.
