Shoulder arthroplasty (SA) has improved significantly over the last twenty years. It offers the effective treatment for patients with severe shoulder dysfunctions. The indicationsfor this procedure have recently expanded tremendously. However, the most common are glenohumeral osteoarthritis, inflammatory shoulder arthropathies, rotator cuff-tear arthropathy, complex fractures of the proximal humerus and osteonecrosis of a humeral head. There is range of the procedures, such as resurfacing of humeral head, anatomictotal shoulder arthroplasty, hemiarthroplasty and reverse shoulder arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: The majority of scapula fractures have historically been treated nonoperatively. The current literature describing patient outcomes following scapula fractures is limited. Our objective was to determine differences in outcomes between operatively and nonoperatively treated scapular fractures. The goal of our study was to provide an updated and comprehensive systematic review for scapula body, neck, and glenoid fractures focusing on several outcomes including union rate, return to work, pain, shoulder active range of motion, strength, functional scores, and any recorded complication

BACKGROUND: Closed reduction and percutaneous pinning of unstable proximal humeral fractures is a well-described technique with some theoretical advantages over open techniques. To our knowledge, the risk of injury to neurovascular structures from percutaneous pinning of the proximal part of the humerus has not been studied. We sought to quantify this risk using a cadaveric model.
METHODS: In ten fresh-frozen cadaveric shoulders, the intact proximal part of the humerus was pinned under fluoroscopic guidance with use of an identical published technique. A total of five 2.5-mm terminally thread

Superior Shoulder Suspensory Complex (SSSC) is a bone and soft-tissue ring securing the connection of the upper extremity to the axial skeleton via the clavicle and sternoclavicular joint. An isolated injury to one component of SSSC is usually stable. An injury to 2 of its components is a potential source of shoulder girdle instability and requires surgical stabilisation. An injury affecting 3 and more components is extremely rare and surgical stabilisation should be indicated. Our study presents the case of a 50-year-old man who fell off the bicycle and sustained a direct blow to his left sho

Between 1992 and 1996, 73 acute humeral shaft fractures in 71 patients were treated with antegrade Russell-Taylor humeral nailing. Sixty (84%) patients sustained multiple trauma, and 26 (36%) fractures were open. Three patients had preoperative brachial artery injuries, and 12 had preoperative nerve palsies. Sixty-nine (94.5%) fractures united primarily, and two additional fractures united after bone grafting. There were no infections. Two (2.7%) iatrogenic radial nerve palsies occurred, and both were transient. Full shoulder function returned in 66 (90%) patients. Two (2.7%) patients had impi

The functional outcome of 27 patients (16 males, 11 females) with a proximal humeral fracture was evaluated using the Simple Shoulder Test. Fifteen patients were also assessed using the Constant system. The mean age of the patients was 46.3 years (range 16-90 years) and the mean follow-up was 14 months (range 6-29 months). There were ten 2-part fractures, eight minimally displaced fractures, two 3-part fractures, three 4-part fractures, three 1-part fracture-dislocations and one 3 parts fracture-dislocation. Twenty-four fractures were treated conservatively and 3 surgically. Thirteen patients

Self-report is often used in large-scale studies. Therefore, it is important to determine the accuracy of self-report. In the Blue Mountains … rates were 10.7% for all fractures and 4.8% for hip, 2.2% for wrist, 19.4% for ankle, and 6.6% for shoulder fractures. Sensitivity and specificity of fracture reports was high, with the lowest sensitivity for shoulder fractures (82.4%). Self-report of major osteoporotic fractures is reasonably accurate but may be improved by obtaining more details about treatment.

The altered biomechanics after reverse shoulder arthroplasty, combined with the accumulation of various stress risers, can lead to stress fractures (SFs) around the prosthesis. The incidence of stress reactions (SRs) after reverse shoulder arthroplasty, characterized by pain and tenderness without radiographic or CT evidence of fractures, is approximately 4.2%, which is comparable to the incidence of SF (6.4%). Among patients with SR, a substantial 32% eventually progress to fractures during clinical follow-up. SPECT/CT is a promising tool that combines morphologic and metabolic information fo

Fractures of the humeral shaft represent 2-4% of all fractures and functional bracing is the gold standard in conservative management. Complications like restricted shoulder range of motion and malunion of the proximal shaft fractures have however been reported. We conducted a retrospective chart re- view of patients treated with the extension casting method over a period of 16 years. Topographically, Garnavos P, M, D, PM and MD fractures and morphologically Simple, Complex and Intermediate fractures were included. Between 2003 and 2019, 74 patients were treated with extension casting. The fra

The armies of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization need a shoulder injury criterion for the EuroSID-2re dummy that must be reliable over a large range of loading conditions, from high velocity, short duration impacts (28 m/s - 3 ms) to low velocity long, duration impacts (4 m/s - 50 ms). In the literature, the human shoulder response to lateral impact was investigated at bounds of the loading condition spectrum as previously mentioned. For the low velocities, the injuries were mainly clavicle fractures and the maximum compression between the acromion and the sternum (Cmax) was proposed as an

Comminuted proximal humerus fractures are more frequently being treated utilizing an intramedullary fibular strut allograft to assist with open reduction internal fixation. Although this technique has led to improved outcomes, avascular necrosis, rotator cuff failure, and/or prominent hardware may still occur necessitating conversion to reverse shoulder arthroplasty. The presence of an intramedullary strut allograft makes this conversion technically demanding and creates certain potential complications unique to this group. This manuscript details the conversion of a proximal humerus open redu

Fractures of the scapula are rare injuries, accounting for 3-5% of all shoulder girdle fractures. They are frequently the result of high energy trauma and often present with concurrent and life-threatening injuries to adjacent structures, leading to significant morbidity and mortality. Patients presenting with scapula fractures must receive a thorough and systematic clinical assessment as directed by national trauma guidelines. Appropriate imaging is essential in delineating fracture morphology and should at the very least include anteroposterior, anteroposterior oblique (Grashey) and axillary

INTRODUCTION: This study introduced a novel approach for the treatment of midshaft clavicle fractures, utilizing patient-specific 3D-printed models for accurate preoperative contouring of dynamic compression plates (DCPs) and an alternative minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) technique with precontoured DCPs through small vertical separated incisions.
PATIENT AND METHODS: Mirror image 3D clavicular models were reproduced from 40 patients with acute displaced midshaft clavicle fractures who underwent MIPO using precontoured DCPs inserted through small, vertical separated incisions.
