Pain is common in athletes which should be well managed. To identify risk factors for shoulder pain, and the association between shoulder pain, lower back pain and knee pain among elementary school-aged badminton players, we conducted a cross-sectional study to collect data of the past year among 611 elementary school age (7-12 years old) badminton players belonging to the Japan Schoolchildren Badminton Federation using a questionnaire. Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were estimated by multivariate logistic regression analysis. The overall incidence rate of shoulder injuries, …

Intraoperative nerve injuries during orthopaedic shoulder procedures can cause pain, paresthesia, and muscle weakness. Iatrogenic nerve injuries are often transient or subclinical, and it is believed that many neurologic injuries go undiagnosed. Several risk factors predispose patients to intraoperative nerve injury, including local tissue stiffness, revision surgery, low body mass index, medications, and decreased range of motion. Apart from patient-specific risk factors, there are direct and indirect mechanisms of injury related to surgical technique, including device implantation, nerve tra

Shoulder pain affects from 16% to 72% of patients after a cerebrovascular accident. Hemiplegic shoulder pain causes considerable distress and reduced activity and can markedly hinder rehabilitation. The aetiology of hemiplegic shoulder pain is probably multifactorial. The ideal management of hemiplegic stroke pain is prevention. For prophylaxis to be effective, it must begin immediately after the stroke. Awareness of potential injuries to the shoulder joint reduces the frequency of shoulder pain after stroke. The multidisciplinary team, patients, and carers should be provided with instructions

Diagnostic and operative arthroscopy of the shoulder joint has gained considerable importance in traumatology and orthopedic surgery over the last years. Injuries of the limbus glenoidalis, in particular traumatic shoulder luxation, injuries of the rotator cuff, infection of the glenohumeral joint and unclear posttraumatic pain are indications for diagnostic and operative arthroscopy. Arthroscopy of the shoulder is a procedure, which offers exact diagnosis and the possibility of immediate surgery at the same time. The technique of the shoulder joint arthroscopy has to be carried out carefully

Throwing arm injuries are common and often related to the shoulder external and internal rotation. Quantitative assessment may provide new insights to physical assessment and options for treatment. After having signed IRB approved consents and filled out injury questionnaires, 96 baseball pitchers were examined on both shoulders using a custom-made wireless device. The resistance onset angle (ROA), end-point angle (EPA), shoulder rotational flexibility (SRF) in both external and internal rotation, and rotational ranges of motion (ROM) of both shoulders were determined. About 34% of subjects ha

Introduction: Concomitant nerve injuries with musculoskeletal injuries present a challenging problem. The goals of nerve reconstruction for the shoulder include shoulder abduction and external rotation. When patients fail to achieve acceptable shoulder external rotation and shoulder abduction, tendon transfers such as trapezius transfer offer a reliable option in the subsequent stage. Case Presentation: A 32-year-old male presented with weak external rotation in his left shoulder, after previous axillary nerve reconstruction. He received the ipsilateral lower trapezius transfer with the aim of

Reverse shoulder arthroplasty has become increasingly popular for the treatment of complex shoulder injuries, including proximal humerus fractures and fixed glenohumeral dislocation, in the elderly population. The early to midterm results of reverse shoulder arthroplasty for the treatment of proximal humerus fractures are promising compared with the results of unconstrained humeral head replacement, and patients may have more predictable improvement with less dependence on bone healing and rehabilitation. However, long-term follow-up is needed, and surgeons must be familiar with various compli…

BACKGROUND: The lateral impaction force against the shoulder often causes multiple lesions to the forequarter including the chest wall. The … er the chest wall injury, the greater the morbidity and mortality. However, that is not the case in shoulder injuries. Multiple disruptions in the Sh3 group may be associated with better outcomes due to dispersion of force from a "crumple zone" where the shoulder collapses with the rib cage sparing the thoracic organs. Examiners demonstrated high reliability for th …

Most shoulder injuries occur due to repetitive overhead movements. Before studying the treatment of these shoulder injuries, it is paramount that health professionals have an understanding of the etiology of and the underlying mechanisms for shoulder pathologies. The act of overhead throwing is an eloquent full-body motion that requires tremendous coordination from the time of force generation to the end of the pitch. The shoulder is a crucial component of the upper-body kinetic chain, as it transmits force created in the lower body to the arm and hand to provide velocity and accuracy to the p…
