Bile is a complex mixture that includes bile salts, the membrane phospholipid phosphatidylcholine (PC), cholesterol and various endobiotic and xenobiotic toxins, each of which is secreted across the canalicular membrane of the hepatocyte by different ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters. The bile salts are essential for the emulsification of dietary fat and lipophilic vitamins. They are synthesized from cholesterol in the hepatocyte and their secretion by the bile salt export pump (BSEP or ABCB11) drives bile flow and is the starting point for the enterohepatic cycle. BACKGROUND: Many severe diseases are caused by defects in lipid metabolism. As a result, patients often accumulate unusual lipids in their blood and tissues, and proper identification of these lipids is essential for correct diagnosis. In this study, we investigated the potential use of proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectroscopy to simultaneously identify and quantify (un)usual lipids present in the blood of patients with different inborn errors of lipid metabolism.
METHODS: We extracted blood plasma or serum lipids in chloroform-methanol (2:1 by volume). After addition of the no

Phytosterols are key minor constituents of olive oil, contributing not only to its nutritional and bioactive properties but also to authenticity assessment, quality control, and regulatory classification. In Greek olive oils, particularly extra virgin olive oils from the dominant Koroneiki cultivar, sterolic composition is a critical yet complex marker, as total-sterol content and specific sterol fractions may naturally approach regulatory thresholds without indicating adulteration or quality loss. This review critically synthesizes current knowledge on phytosterol profiling in Greek olive oil
