No differential effects among cooling strategies on post-exercise core temperature recovery in male athletes.

Personal cooling strategies are used to lower body core temperature. This controlled cross-over trial evaluates the efficacy of cooling stra … (time to reach pre-exercise core body temperature) was not different between the groups (p = 0.38). Skin temperature decrement between the groups was significantly different (p < 0.001), specifically, control vs. combination (p = 0.029). In conclusion, no significant differences in cooling rate were found between mixed cooling interventions, but in all conditions …

Thermoregulation for very preterm infants in the delivery room: a narrative review.

Abnormal temperature in preterm infants is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Infants born prematurely are at risk of abnormal temperature immediately after birth in the delivery room (DR). The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that the temperature of newly born infants is maintained between 36.5-37.5oC after birth. When caring for very preterm infants, the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) recommends using a combination of interventions to prevent heat loss. While hypothermia remains prevalent, efforts to prevent it have increased the incidence

Upgrading skin barrier Protection: Addition of active ingredients to a Gelatin/Tannic Acid-Based hydrogel patch for treating skin lesions related to Personal protective Equipment.

Prolonged use of Personal Protective Equipment, like surgical masks, can cause skin issues such as acne ("maskne") and rosacea flare-ups due to pressure and moisture. While dressings can protect the skin, they often reduce mask effectiveness and lack pharmaceuticals to treat common skin lesions. This study introduces an innovative dual-function gelatin/tannic acid-based hydrogel patch incorporating metronidazole (1% w/w) or salicylic acid (2% w/w) to offer both skin protection and treatment. The hydrogels were characterized for gelation temperature, burst strength, extensibility, adhesivity, a

Skin Thermal Management for Subcutaneous Photoelectric Conversion Reaching 500 mW.

Despite possessing higher tissue transmittance and maximum permissible exposure power density for skin relative to other electromagnetic waves, second near-infrared light (1000-1350 nm) is scarcely applicable to subcutaneous photoelectric conversion, owing to the companion photothermal effect. Here, skin thermal management is conceived to utmostly utilize the photothermal effect of a photovoltaic cell, which not only improves the photoelectric conversion efficiency but also eliminates skin hyperthermia. In vivo, the output power can be higher than 500 mW with a photoelectric conversion efficie

Current On-Skin Flexible Sensors, Materials, Manufacturing Approaches, and Study Trends for Health Monitoring: A Review.

Due to an ever-increasing amount of the population focusing more on their personal health, thanks to rising living standards, there is a pressing need to improve personal healthcare devices. These devices presently require laborious, time-consuming, and convoluted procedures that heavily rely on cumbersome equipment, causing discomfort and pain for the patients during invasive methods such as sample-gathering, blood sampling, and other traditional benchtop techniques. The solution lies in the development of new flexible sensors with temperature, humidity, strain, pressure, and sweat detection

The Effect of Sunscreens on the Skin Barrier.

Transepidermal water-loss (TEWL), stratum-corneum hydration (SCH), erythema, elasticity, pH and melanin, are parameters of the epidermal barrier function and skin homeostasis that objectively indicate the integrity of the skin barrier. Sunscreens are necessary to protect people from skin cancer, but could modify the skin barrier function. Nevertheless, there are not many studies on their impact on skin homeostasis. The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of sunscreens on the epidermal-barrier function and skin homeostasis of healthy individuals. A prospective observational study was de

Restoration of thermoregulatory response to body cooling by cooling hands and feet.

Deep body temperature fell progressively by 0.5-1.4 degrees C during 3-h immersions in 29 degrees C water. Both in unacclimatized volunteers … n and with distilled water sometimes reduced warm sensation, a little. It is concluded that uniform skin temperature of 29 degrees C often induces insufficient heat-gain reflexes to maintain body temperature and that cooling of the extremities can restore adequate thermoregulatory response.

Temperature Differences Between Controlled Primary Hypothyroidism and Healthy Patients: An Exploratory Study.

INTRODUCTION: Hypothyroidism is conventionally treated with replacement therapy through levothyroxine (LT4). Despite the improvement in symptoms, cold intolerance persists in some patients. The present study aims to determine whether there is a difference in temperature perception and skin temperature between patients with primary controlled hypothyroidism (PCH) and a group of healthy controls matched for body mass index and age. Secondarily we aimed to determine difference in quality of life. METHODOLOGY: Skin temperature measurements were performed in both groups, both in the central and pe…

Evaluating low-energy cooling strategies on thermal and cardiac strain in older adults exposed to very hot and dry heat with accompanying activities of daily living.

We tested the hypothesis that skin wetting would attenuate, whereas electric fans would increase, thermal and cardiac strain in older adults exposed to very hot and dry heat. Twenty-three older adults (66-84 yr) were exposed (randomized) to 3 h of ambient heating (47°C and 15% relative humidity) with water spray, fan use, water spray + fan use, or no cooling intervention. We assessed thermal, cardiovascular, and cardiac responses. Compared with control, water spray reduced the increase in core temperature by -0.24°C [95% CI: -0.42, -0.06] (P = 0.007), ending skin temperature by -2.1°C [-2.6, -…

Thermal Symmetry Between Residual and Intact Limbs in Individuals with Lower Limb Amputation: Resting and Post-Activity Conditions.

Background and Objectives: Individuals with lower limb amputation are at increased risk of developing post-amputation complications that may affect rehabilitation outcomes. Assessing thermal symmetry between the residual and intact limbs, as well as activity-related temperature changes, represents a non-invasive and cost-effective approach for preliminary clinical evaluation. This study aimed to investigate regional skin temperature symmetry between residual and intact limbs at rest and following activity, and to examine whether the presence of phantom limb sensation or pain influences thermal…

Brief skin cooling modulates the reflexes generated by whole-body vibration.

BACKGROUND: Whole-body vibration (WBV) is a popular exercise method known for its neuromuscular benefits, though the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. WBV activates distinct reflexes based on vibration amplitude and voluntary muscle activity: low-amplitude vibration or voluntary contraction typically triggers the tonic vibration reflex (TVR), whereas high-amplitude vibration or quiet standing activates the bone myoregulation reflex (BMR). Muscle spindles, which are sensitive to sympathetic input, may exhibit increased responsiveness to vibration during brief skin cooling. OBJECTIVES: This

Naloxone increases blood flow in the human hand.

Intravenous injection of 2 mg naloxone produced a rapid and pronounced rise of blood flow (6.3 +/- 5.0 to 67.0 +/- 15.1 ml min-1 100 ml-1) and skin temperature (28.3 +/- 3.0 to 32.4 +/- 1.2 degrees C) in the finger and hand of seven of ten normal volunteers. In the other three there was only a small response. Skin temperature did not change in either the face or the foot. Three responding subjects who were retested with 0.4 mg naloxone showed a smaller and briefer response. To exclude a local effect of naloxone on skin blood flow due to release of histamine, responders and non-responders were …
