Giant intracerebral schwannoma of the skull base misinterpreted as a macroprolactinoma.

Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) is a group of inherited metabolic diseases, characterized by defects in the degradation of glycosaminoglycans and their accumulation in lysosomes. However, various secondary cellular changes also contribute to the pathomechanism of MPS. Previous studies have reached contradictory conclusions about the changes in mitochondria in MPS, from increased numbers of mitochondria to impaired activities of some mitochondrial respiratory chain enzymes to no changes in mitochondrial respiration. In this preliminary, hypothesis-generating study, mitochondrial network morphology

The earliest known case of frontal sinus osteoma in man.

Frontal sinus osteoma is a relatively common finding in the modern clinical setting. Although, its paleopathological record is not in dispute, its presence in Ancient Egypt has never been clarified. The aim of this article is to contribute to the debate. An Egyptian mummy head from the Musée d'Éthnographie de Neuchâtel (Switzerland) was studied radiologically and the obtained evidence was contextualized in the wider frame of multidisciplinary paleopathology. A 128-slice CT scanner was used for further investigation; datasets were processed with OsiriX-64 bit (version 5.8.5), and multiplanar (M

Electrochemotherapy in the treatment of maxillary multilobular bone tumor in a dog: clinical, histopathological, and tomographic findings.

Multilobular Bone Tumor (MBT) is a rare, slow-growing, and locally invasive neoplasm in middle-aged to older dogs, occurring predominantly in flat bones of the skull, pelvis, or ribs. This work reports the case of a 10-year-old, castrated, male Schnauzer, presenting with a tumorous growth in the incisor region measuring 1.0 x 0.7 x 0.6 centimeters for 30 days. Excisional biopsy revealed polygonal, hyperchromatic mesenchymal cells with oval nuclei and condensed chromatin, confirming a well-differentiated MLTB. However, the tumor recurred within 5 months, measuring 3.3 x 2.4 centimeters in the s

Sinonasal renal cell-like adenocarcinoma, a unique variant of primary clear cell carcinoma of the head and neck: The first reported case in Korea.

RATIONALE: Primary sinonasal renal cell-like adenocarcinoma (SNRCLA) is a rare and unique neoplasm. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 63-year-old man presented with repeated epistaxis, nasal obstruction and hyposmia of 2-month duration. Radiological studies revealed a mass of the left ethmoid sinus involving anterior skull base. DIAGNOSIS: The patient was treated with craniofacial resection, bifrontal craniotomy combined with an endonasal endoscopic approach. Intraoperatively, a hypervascular paranasal mass invading the dura mater was removed en block. Histologically, the tumor resembled a clear cell rena

"Lazy" far-lateral approach to the anterior foramen magnum and lower clivus.

The far-lateral approach (FLA) has become a mainstay for skull base surgeries involving the anterior foramen magnum and lower clivus. The authors present a surgical technique using the FLA for the management of lesions of the anterior/ anterolateral foramen magnum and lower clivus. The authors consider this modification a "lazy" FLA. The vertebral artery (VA) is both a critical anatomical structure and a barrier that limits access to this region. The most important nuance of this FLA technique is the management of this critical vessel. When the lazy FLA is used, the VA is reflected laterally,

Radiation induced malignancy in retinoblastoma: new pathology in a case report.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with a genetic history of retinoblastoma have an increased risk of developing a second neoplasm. When these secondary malignancies occur in the previously irradiated field of the primary tumor they are most commonly osteosarcomas, fibrosarcomas, and squamous cell carcinomas. We present the first case of a radiation induced adenocarcinoma in a patient after treatment for retinoblastoma. STUDY DESIGN: A case report of one patient. METHODS: This case study underwent a chart review, comprehensive history, physical exam, rigid nasal endoscopy, and radiographic imaging. A liter

[Abducens paralysis from the viewpoint of the ENT physician and skull base surgeon].

BACKGROUND: Among the nerves supplying the extraocular muscles, abducent nerve paralysis is the most common one resulting in double vision. Surveys confirm that the palsy is most often benign and transient. In most cases Ophthalmologist, Neurologist, Pediatrician and Physician are involved in diagnosis and treatment of this symptom. The Otorhinolaryngologist is needed in the least common cases of abducent nerve palsy due to intra- or extracranial diseases, for example trauma, inflammatory complications or tumors of the skull base. PATIENTS AND RESULTS: 12 patients (6 male, 6 female) with abdu

Diffuse cavernous hemangioma of the skull misdiagnosed as skull metastasis in breast cancer patient: one case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Primary intraosseous cavernous hemangiomas (PICHs) of the skull are extremely rare. To date, diffuse cranial hemangioma of skull has not been reported. In cancer patients, it is often misdiagnosed as metastasis. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we presented a case of a 50-year-old female patient suffering from slightly headache who received breast cancer modified radical mastectomy in 2004, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging findings revealed abnormal lesions of diffuse skull which were misdiagnosed as skull metastasis, and the relevant literatures were also reviewed. Neuronavigational guidance in craniofacial approaches for large (para)nasal tumors involving the anterior skull base and upper clival lesions.

OBJECTIVE: Due to the destruction of osseous landmarks of the skull base or paranasal sinuses, the anatomical orientation during surgery of frontobasal or clival tumors with (para)nasal extension is often challenging. In this relation computer assisted surgical (CAS) guidance might be a useful tool. Here, we explored the use of CAS in an interdisciplinary setting. METHODS: The surgical series consists of 13 patients who underwent a lateral rhinotomy combined with a subfrontal craniotomy in case of significant intracranial tumor extension. The procedures were planned and assisted by advanced C

The pathology of extracranial scalp and skull masses in young children.

OBJECTIVE: Extracranial subcutaneous masses involving the scalp and/or skull in young children are uncommon lesions that get excised by the neurosurgeon. Although the most common reported lesion is the dermoid cyst, our experience suggests that the spectrum of pathology in these lesions can present diagnostic challenges to the pathologist. MATERIAL: We reviewed 30 consecutive extracranial masses from 29 patients between July 1998 and June 2003. METHOD: Hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections were reviewed in all cases, and immunohistochemistry was performed in select cases. RESULTS: Twenty-t

Asymptomatic giant primary Ewing sarcoma of the skull in an adolescent: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Primary Ewing's sarcoma of the skull is an exceedingly rare condition, accounting for only 1-6% of cases. It is highly malignant and predominantly affects the long bones and pelvis of children and young adults. Skull involvement is unusual, with the parietal and frontal bones being the most frequently affected. We present a rare case of a giant primary occipital Ewing sarcoma that was clinically asymptomatic. CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-year-old male presented with a 3-year history of a progressively enlarging, painless left parieto-occipital swelling, with accelerated growth over the

Malignant tumors affecting the head and neck region in ancient times: Comprehensive study of the CRAB Database.

In the modern world, cancer is a growing cause of mortality, but archeological studies have shown that it is not exclusive to modern populations. The aim of this study is to examine the epidemiologic, social, and clinicopathologic features of head and neck cancers in ancient populations. To do this, we extracted all records that described malignant lesions in the head and neck region available in the Cancer Research in Ancient Bodies Database (CRAB). The estimated age, sex, physical condition of the remains (skeletonized, mummified), anatomic location of tumors, geographic location, chronology
