Sleep disturbances are common features of bipolar disorder (BD), yet little is known about trajectories of sleep disturbances in youth with BD. Using longitudinal data, this study assessed the stability of sleep disturbances and their ability to predict symptom progression in adolescents diagnosed with BD compared to controls. Thirteen- to 19-year-olds meeting diagnostic criteria for BD I (n = 19, 16.2 ± 1.75 years, 57.9 % female, 68.4% Caucasian) and psychiatrically healthy age-comparable controls (n = 21, 15.7 ± 1.48 years. 52.4% female, 57.1% Caucasian) were assessed for sleep onset latency

Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is one of the most prevalent sleep-wake disorders and is associated with brain damage. In this review, we describe the role of astroglia, microglia and oligodendroglia as the main cellular mediators of brain damage in SDB based on the results of experimental studies. Specifically, we describe the role of the molecules that are expressed by glia and mediate oxidative stress (NADPH-oxidase), inflammation (hypoxia-inducible factor-1, inducible nitric oxide synthase, pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines) and sympathetic hyperactivation (ATP, lactate).

Sleep is vital for physical and mental health and plays an important role in general well-being. Given the high prevalence of sleep disturbances in contemporary society, developing effective sleep-enhancing interventions, including non-pharmacological approaches such as hypnosis, is important. In this chapter, we will first discuss the nature of sleep and the factors that can disturb it. We will present scientific evidence on how hypnotherapy can improve sleep parameters and disturbances. This will be followed by the presentation of experimental studies highlighting the potential of hypnotic s

Sleep medicine has matured into a recognised medical discipline, characterised by defined diagnostic concepts, evidence-based treatments, and significant progress in understanding sleep physiology and disorders. Sleep and its disturbances impact virtually every aspect of health and well-being. The major categories of sleep disorders include insomnia, neurological and psychiatric sleep disorders, sleep-disordered breathing, and paediatric sleep disorders. Breakthroughs in biomedical research have deepened clinical expertise across each of these domains. Although sleep medicine has historically

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative disorders among the older population. Sleep disruption and circadian rhythm disorders often develop in AD patients, and many experience sleeping difficulties requiring pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions.
AREAS COVERED: This review appraised the evidence from clinical studies on various pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies for sleep disturbances in AD patients and proposed an algorithm to manage sleep disturbances in this population of patients.
EXPERT OPINION: Non-pharmacologica

UNLABELLED: This PubMed-based review discusses primary and secondary sleep disorders associated with rheumatological diseases. It presents the pathophysiological interaction of sleep-related diseases and rheumatological disorders and summarises clinical symptoms, diagnostic investigation and therapies from a somnological perspective.
EPIDEMIOLOGY: 70 % of patients suffering from rheumatological diseases report poor sleep quality, numerous awakenings at night and non-restorative sleep. More than 20 % of these patients are found to have primary sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnoea (

Summary Sleep disorders are commonly encountered in patients with vertigo. Comorbid of them is a major clinical challenge as the outcomes of both conditions are worsened by each other. The sleep and vertigo issues that are covered in this review are epidemiology, possible mechanisms and pathogenesis, and most recent clinical studies. In addition, treatment recommendations on vertigo patients with sleep disorders are discussed briefly. The multiple interactions between vertigo and sleep disorders underscore the need for improving the ability to deal with comorbidity.

This commentary is intended to supplement the accompanying review of sleep problems in childhood psychiatric disorders by Gregory and Sadeh. A number of considerations are outlined because of their relevance to both clinical practice and research concerning assessment and treatment of sleep disturbance in children in general and especially those with psychiatric and/or neurological conditions. These considerations (which illustrate the importance of combined medical and psychological involvement) are as follows: the importance of screening for sleep disturbance which otherwise may well be over

Evidence increasingly suggests sleep disorders are associated with higher risk of cardiovascular events, including stroke. Strong data correlate untreated sleep apnea with poorer stroke outcomes and more recent evidence implicates sleep disruption as a possible etiology for increased cerebrovascular events. Also, sleep duration may affect incidence of cardiovascular events. In addition, sleep-disordered breathing, insomnia, restless legs syndrome, and parasomnias can occur as a result of cerebrovascular events. Treatment of sleep disorders improve sleep-related symptoms and may also improve st

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is prevalent and poses major public health implications. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysregulation and sleep disturbances are theorized to be distal risk factors. However, previous research has depended on cross-sectional designs, small predictor sets, and suboptimal methods, limiting temporal inference and predictive accuracy. We thus capitalized on machine learning to identify physiology and sleep predictors of nine-year MDD symptoms.
METHOD: Community adults (N = 1054) participated in a study that included baseline physiological electrocardiog

Breathing is controlled by an automatic brain-stem controller acted on by higher neural influences that stabilize breathing and compensate for neuromechanical abnormalities. Loss of this wakefulness-dependent descending influences during nonrapid eye movement (NREM) sleep results in the appearance of a hypocapnic apnea threshold, which is associated with periodic breathing when the gain of chemical feedback loops is high. In addition, loss of the descending wakefulness influence leads to loss of motor compensation that results in a rise in upper airway resistance, obstructive sleep apnea or hy

Recent research has demonstrated that respiratory activities are stage dependent and that some breathing disorders appear only in sleep. Sleep apnea syndromes, defined as the occurrence of at least 30 apneas of greater than or equal to 10 sec, dramatically affect patients' sleep and waking behavior. During 1977-80, 114 patients with sleep apnea and 82 patients with nonapneic breathing disorders in sleep, were recorded in the Technion Sleep Laboratory. In both groups, patients were mostly male in the 30- to 50-yr age-group, whose primary complaint was excessive daytime sleepiness. Nonapneic bre

Sleepwalking is one of the parasomnias, a group of disorders that also includes night terrors, nocturnal enuresis and nightmares. This disorder of arousal is much more common in children than in adults, and it is commonly associated with other parasomnias. Sleepwalking typically occurs during the first three hours of sleep, when sleep stages 3 and 4 (non-rapid-eye-movement sleep) are most prevalent. The episodes usually last 30 seconds to 30 minutes. The differential diagnosis of sleepwalking includes partial complex seizures occurring during sleep, rapid-eye-movement behavior disorder, night

Smith-Magenis syndrome (SMS) (OMIM #182290) is a rare genetic disorder with a prevalence of 1 in 25 000 live births. Approximately 90% of SMS patients have harbored a 3.7 Mb interstitial 17p11.2 deletion involving the RAI1 gene, while 10% of cases have carried pathogenic variants of the RAI1 gene. SMS is characterized by sleep disturbance, intellectual impairment, developmental delay, craniofacial and cardiovascular anomalies, obesity, self injury, aggressive and autistic-like behaviors. Most SMS patients have sleep disorders such as short total sleep time, frequent night waking, short sleep o

Although not discernible at first glance, sleep is a highly active and regulated brain state. Although we spend practically one third of our lifetimes in this stage, its importance is often taken for granted. Sleep loss can lead to disease, error and economic loss. Our understanding of how sleep is achieved has greatly advanced in recent years, and with that, the management of sleep disorders has improved. There is still room for improvement and recently many new compounds have reached clinical trials with a few being approved for commercial use. Areas covered: In this review, the authors make
