A brief review on the natural history, venomics and the medical importance of bushmaster (Lachesis) pit viper snakes.

Snakes of the genus Lachesis, commonly known as bushmasters, are the largest venomous snakes in the Americas. Because these snakes have their habitats in areas of remote forests they are difficult to find, and consequently there are few studies of Lachesis taxa in their natural ecosystems. Bushmasters are distributed in tropical forest areas of South and Central America. In Brazil they can be found in the Amazon Rainforest and the Atlantic Forest. Despite the low incidence of cases, laquetic envenoming causes severe permanent sequelae due to the high amount of inoculated venom. These accidents

Prospective assessment of the false positive rate of the Australian snake venom detection kit in healthy human samples.

The Snake Venom Detection Kit (SVDK; bioCSL Pty Ltd, Australia) distinguishes venom from the five most medically significant snake immunotypes found in Australia. This study assesses the rate of false positives that, by definition, refers to a positive assay finding in a sample from someone who has not been bitten by a venomous snake. Control unbroken skin swabs, simulated bite swabs and urine specimens were collected from 61 healthy adult volunteers [33 males and 28 females] for assessment. In all controls, simulated bite site and urine samples [a total of 183 tests], the positive control wel

Venom antibody levels in a patient bitten by a young puff adder (Bitis arietans) during a world record attempt.

Following a bite on the hand by a young puff adder (Bitis arietans), the 21-year-old male victim was admitted to hospital suffering from symptoms of mild envenoming comprising swelling to the elbow and painful axillary nodes. The patient was not treated with antivenom. One day after the bite, B. arietans venom was detected in small amounts in the blood; none was detected subsequently. Venom antibody was detected by ELISA on the ninth day after the bite, rising to a peak after three weeks. After a further 11 days at the same level, antibody levels gradually fell but were still significantly hig

The secretory phenotypes of envenomed cells: Insights into venom cytotoxicity.

Snake envenomation is listed as Category A Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) by World Health Organization, indicates a severe public health problem. The global figures for envenomation cases are estimated to be more than 1.8 million annually. Even if the affected victims survive the envenomation, they might suffer from permanent morbidity due to local envenomation. One of the most prominent local envenomation is dermonecrosis. Dermonecrosis is a pathophysiological outcome of envenomation that often causes disability in the victims due to surgical amputations, deformities, contracture, and chro

Equine laminitis: bites by Bothrops spp cause hoof lamellar pathology in the contralateral as well as in the bitten limb.

The envenoming caused by Bothrops snakebite includes local symptoms, such as pronounced edema, hemorrhage, intense pain, vesicles, blisters and myonecrosis. The principal systemic symptom consists in the alteration of blood clotting, due to fibrinogen consumption and platelet abnormalities. The horses involved in this study had this symptomatology and one of them exhibited symptoms consistent with laminitis in the bitten and in the contralateral limbs. Laminitis lesions were characterized by separation of the hoof lamellar basement membrane (BM) from basal cells of the epidermis. These results

The Hidden Snake in the Grass: Superior Detection of Snakes in Challenging Attentional Conditions.

Snakes have provided a serious threat to primates throughout evolution. Furthermore, bites by venomous snakes still cause significant morbidity and mortality in tropical regions of the world. According to the Snake Detection Theory (SDT Isbell, 2006; 2009), the vital need to detect camouflaged snakes provided strong evolutionary pressure to develop astute perceptual capacity in animals that were potential targets for snake attacks. We performed a series of behavioral tests that assessed snake detection under conditions that may have been critical for survival. We used spiders as the control st

Anti-inflammatory properties of Centaurea calolepis Boiss. and cnicin against Macrovipera lebetina obtusa (Dwigubsky, 1832) and Montivipera xanthina (Gray, 1849) venoms in rat.

Macrovipera lebetina obtusa (Dwigubsky, 1832) and Montivipera xanthina (Gray, 1849) (Ottoman Viper) are viper snakes from Viperidae family and found in various locations in Anatolia. Both snakes are responsible for major snake bite cases in Turkey Their venoms cause necrosis, hemorrhage, pain and local edema. Centaurea L. (Asteraceae) species draw attention as potential anti-inflammatory sources due to their traditional uses and accomplished studies on this field. C. calolepis Boiss. is an endemic taxon distributed in Aegean and Antalya regions in Turkey. Chloroform extract of C. calolepis and

Genetic variability in snake venom and its implications for antivenom development in sub-Saharan Africa.

Snake venom, a complex mixture of proteins, has attracted human attention for centuries due to its associated mortality, morbidity and other therapeutic properties. In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where snakebites pose a significant health risk, understanding the genetic variability of snake venoms is crucial for developing effective antivenoms. The wide geographic distribution of venomous snake species in SSA countries demonstrates the need to develop specific and broad antivenoms. However, the development of broad antivenoms has been hindered by different factors, such as antivenom cross-reacti

Venomous snakebites: Rapid action saves lives-A multifaceted community education programme increases awareness about snakes and snakebites among the rural population of Tamil Nadu, India.

The lack of public awareness surrounding the dangers of snakebite envenomation (SBE) is one of the most critical factors contributing to SBE-induced complications, and subsequently exacerbating the number of deaths and disabilities resulting from SBE. In this study, we deployed a multifaceted community education programme to educate students, healthcare professionals and members of the public in rural areas of Tamil Nadu, India about the dangers of SBE, appropriate first aid measures and the 'do's and don'ts' following a snakebite. An assessment of prior knowledge within these communities iden

Microplate fluorescence protease assays test the inhibition of select North American snake venoms' activities with an anti-proteinase library.

Snake envenomation is a relatively neglected significant world health problem, designated an orphan disease by the WHO. While often effective, antivenins are insufficient. Could another approach greatly aid inhibition of the venom toxins? New fluorescent substrates for measuring protease activity in microplate assays suitable for high throughput screening were tested and found reproducible with snake venom. Representative North American venoms showed relatively strong proteinase and collagenase, but weaker elastase activities. Caseinolytic activity is inhibited by the nonspecific proteinase in

Road Guarder (Conophis lineatus concolor: Dipsadidae): Case documentation of a clinically significant envenoming.

Detailed cases of envenoming by a non-front-fanged snake (NFFS) from North, Central, and South America have had limited representation in the toxicology and toxinology literature. The NFFS, Conophis lineatus, has been reported to deliver bites that resulted in moderately severe envenoming. However, most of these reported cases have been via personal communication, or self-reported and lacking in detailed medical evaluations. Reported here is a case of an amateur naturalist who was traveling in Mexico and was envenomed following extensive protracted bites to both hands from a wild Conophis line
