Oligotyping reveals community level habitat selection within the genus Vibrio.

The genus Vibrio is a metabolically diverse group of facultative anaerobic bacteria, common in aquatic environments and marine hosts. The genus contains several species of importance to human health and aquaculture, including the causative agents of human cholera and fish vibriosis. Vibrios display a wide variety of known life histories, from opportunistic pathogens to long-standing symbionts with individual host species. Studying Vibrio ecology has been challenging as individual species often display a wide range of habitat preferences, and groups of vibrios can act as socially cohesive group

Group-Based Interventions for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of the Role of Trauma Type.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with poor health outcomes. While group-based therapies offer accessible treatment options, their effectiveness remains unclear. Social identity factors, such as shared group membership and stigma, may influence treatment success. OBJECTIVES: This review examined: (1) the effectiveness of group-based treatments for PTSD symptoms, (2) differences between group and individual therapies, (3) whether trauma type (e.g., interpersonal, stigmatized) and group fit (e.g., gender, shared trauma) moderate outcomes, and (4) the role of group

Quantification of Neighborhood-Level Social Determinants of Health in the Continental United States.

IMPORTANCE: An association between social and neighborhood characteristics and health outcomes has been reported but remains poorly understood owing to complex multidimensional factors that vary across geographic space. OBJECTIVES: To quantify social determinants of health (SDOH) as multiple dimensions across the continental United States (the 48 contiguous states and the District of Columbia) at a small-area resolution and to examine the association of SDOH with premature mortality within Chicago, Illinois. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this cross-sectional study, census tracts from

Probing the brain in autism using FMRI and diffusion tensor imaging.

Newly emerging theories suggest that the brain does not function as a cohesive unit in autism, and this discordance is reflected in the behavioral symptoms displayed by individuals with autism. While structural neuroimaging findings have provided some insights into brain abnormalities in autism, the consistency of such findings is questionable. Functional neuroimaging, on the other hand, has been more fruitful in this regard because autism is a disorder of dynamic processing and allows examination of communication between cortical networks, which appears to be where the underlying problem occu

Systems and policy factors affecting service delivery for homeless adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) is characterized by impairment of cognitive function that results in daily living limitations. Adults with IDD face barriers to meeting basic needs and must navigate multiple public systems to access services. The housing affordability crisis has contributed to a disproportionate overrepresentation of adults with IDD who experience homelessness. Little evidence has articulated the unique systems- and policy-level issues facing homeless adults with IDD. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to 1) map the systems with which adults w

Research hotspots and trends in unexplained recurrent spontaneous abortion (URSA) from 2014 to 2024: a bibliometric analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) represents a significant challenge in obstetrics and reproductive medicine. Causative factors in 40%-50% of RSA couples remain unknown, a condition termed unexplained recurrent spontaneous abortion (URSA). This study employed bibliometric analysis to elucidate global research trends and identify key areas of interest in URSA. METHODS: We utilized the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC), including Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-EXPANDED) and Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI), as our data source. Our search encompassed all publicat

Supporting mental health in war: Knowledge transfer through ECNP traumatic stress network webinars.

On February 24, 2022, Russia's invasion of Ukraine marked a significant escalation of the armed conflict that began in 2014. In response, Traumatic Stress Network of the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP) launched the "Hot Topics in Dark Days" Virtual Meetings. This initiative, conducted bimonthly in 2022 and monthly webinars since 2023, aimed to connect mental health practitioners from war-affected communities in Ukraine with international experts. The primary goal was to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and skills in psycho-trauma management, amidst the challenges of the

Sounds of Strength: a programmatic evaluation of a music therapist led community-based program for Veterans in supportive housing.

INTRODUCTION: Complexities such as TBI and co-occurring conditions such as homelessness impact Veterans' awareness and use of health care services offered in the VHA and the community. Thus, targeted interventions that engage and reduce barriers to care among Veterans with interconnected challenges are needed. Research has suggested that music therapy interventions are well received by both active-duty Service Members and Veterans, but little is available on music therapy-based programming to address the complex needs of Veterans with interconnected challenges. METHODS: The purpose of this pr

Adapting and testing measures of organizational context in primary care clinics in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Implementation science frameworks situate intervention implementation and sustainment within the context of the implementing organization and system. Aspects of organizational context such as leadership have been defined and measured largely within US health care settings characterized by decentralization and individual autonomy. The relevance of these constructs in other settings may be limited by differences like collectivist orientation, resource constraints, and hierarchical power structures. We aimed to adapt measures of organizational context in South African primary care cli

Why do acute healthcare staff behave unprofessionally towards each other and how can these behaviours be reduced? A realist review.

BACKGROUND: Unprofessional behaviour in healthcare systems can negatively impact staff well-being, patient safety and organisational costs. Unprofessional behaviour encompasses a range of behaviours, including incivility, microaggressions, harassment and bullying. Despite efforts to combat unprofessional behaviour in healthcare settings, it remains prevalent. Interventions to reduce unprofessional behaviour in health care have been conducted - but how and why they may work is unclear. Given the complexity of the issue, a realist review methodology is an ideal approach to examining unprofession

Informing policy through evidence: A scoping review of factors that influence enrolment in community-based health insurance in East Africa.

BACKGROUND: Community-based health insurance (CBHI) has emerged as a promising option to enhance the attainment of Universal Health Coverage in Low- and middle-income countries and Sub-Saharan Africa. However, CBHI schemes in Africa particularly in the eastern regions, grapple with chronic low enrolment, jeopardizing their sustainability and intended impact. Understanding the determinants of enrolment in these schemes is critical for designing effective strategies to boost participation. In this scoping review, we categorized and discussed these determinants across socio-ecological levels. ME

The lived experience of resilience in families of children with cancer: a meta-aggregative synthesis of qualitative studies.

BACKGROUND: Childhood cancer imposes substantial psychological, social, and practical challenges on families, often disrupting emotional stability, caregiving roles, financial security, and family functioning. Family resilience has increasingly been recognized as a dynamic process that supports adaptation under prolonged adversity. However, qualitative evidence regarding how families develop and sustain resilience in the context of childhood cancer remains fragmented. OBJECTIVE: This qualitative systematic review aimed to synthesize existing qualitative evidence on family resilience among fam

"It would have been easier for me to give up if I were alone": how a pilot individualized case management intervention influenced female sex workers' oral HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis use in eThekwini, South Africa.

PURPOSE: In South Africa, an estimated 62% of female sex workers (FSW) are living with HIV. Oral HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is effective, but FSWs' PrEP use typically declines rapidly post-initiation in service settings. We examined a pilot individualized case management (ICM) intervention aiming to increase PrEP adherence and persistence among cisgender FSW initiating PrEP in eThekwini, South Africa. To assess pathways of intervention influence and potential effectiveness, we characterize the support participants received from the case manager (CM) and the ways in which it influenced

Effects of dance-based interventions on body image and self-worth in overweight and obese individuals: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Emerging theoretical frameworks and empirical findings indicate that dance interventions may positively influence body image and self-esteem in individuals with obesity. This systematic review aims to identify and synthesize studies examining the effects of dance on body image components (e.g., body perception) and facets of self-esteem (e.g., self-acceptance) in this population. Specifically, the review addresses: (a) the current state of evidence on the impact of dance interventions on body image and self-esteem in individuals with obesity, and (b) the intervention characteristic

Design of the think PHRESH longitudinal cohort study: Neighborhood disadvantage, cognitive aging, and alzheimer's disease risk in disinvested, black neighborhoods.

BACKGROUND: Black Americans have disproportionately higher rates and earlier onset of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) relative to White Americans. We currently lack a comprehensive understanding of how the lived experience and broader societal factors, including cumulative exposure to structural racism and the mechanisms underlying the risks, may contribute to elevated ADRD risk in Black Americans. METHODS: The Think PHRESH study builds on existing, community-based research infrastructure, from the ongoing Pittsburgh Hill/Homewood Research on Neighborhood Change and Health (P

Alternative Locales for the Health Promotion of African American Men: A Survey of African American Men in Chicago Barbershops.

African American men (AA) carry unequal burdens of several conditions including cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and HIV. Engagement of diverse populations including AA men in research and health promotion practice is vital to examining the health disparities that continue to plague many racially and ethnically diverse communities. To date, there is little research on best practices that indicate locations, community areas and settings to engage AA men in research and health promotion. Traditionally, the AA church has been a key area to engage AA men and women. However, changing tides in attend

Evaluation of Two Approaches for Responding to Allegations of Family Maltreatment in the U.S. Army: Coordinated Community Response Impacts and Costs.

INTRODUCTION: The U.S. Air Force (USAF) conducted a program of research to develop and disseminate reliable and valid criteria for partner and child maltreatment (comprising abuse [physical, emotional/psychological, and sexual] and neglect). These criteria are now used in all branches of the U.S. military. The U.S. Army was the first service outside the USAF to adopt the criteria sets and computerized decision support tool but maintained the original committee composition (the "Case Review Committee" [CRC]) instead of adopting the entire assessment, allegation determination, and treatment plan
