The various effect of social isolation on depression risk among old population in China during covid-19 pandemic: A population based survey.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the current study is to assess various effect of social isolation on depression risk among older adults during COVID-19 in China. METHODS: Data was obtained from the China Longitudinal Ageing Social Survey (CLASS) conducted in 2020. A total of 9883 participants were included. Depression status was assessed by 9-item Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). Social isolation was assessed by Lubben Social Network Scale-6 (LSNS-6). The odds ratios of depression risk according to LSNS-6 categories were obtained using a logistic regression model with adjus

Prefrontal cortex excitatory neurons show distinct response to heroin-associated cue and social stimulus after prolonged heroin abstinence in mice.

Substance use disorder (SUD) has been linked with social impairments. The social cognitive dysfunctions can further increase the risk of the development of SUD or relapse. Therefore, understanding the neural mechanism of substance exposure-associated social impairments is beneficial for the development of novel prevention or treatment strategies for SUD. The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is a key brain region involved in both social cognition and drug addiction. Specifically, the prelimbic part of PFC (PrL) regulates social interaction and heroin-seeking behavior. Therefore, in this study, we explor…

Young children understand how social connections affect what people know about each other.

An unwritten expectation in our everyday social interactions is that intimate personal information about someone-"insider knowledge"-is usually confined within close relationships. For example, it would be odd, or even unsettling, if a stranger knew about your favorite movie. Such expectations about who knows what about whom constitute a cornerstone of complex social behavior, but much remains unknown about their cognitive underpinnings and developmental origins. Drawing on parental report (Study 1) as well as a novel experimental approach using controlled but naturalistic videochat conversati…

Local Network Interaction as a Mechanism for Wealth Inequality.

Given limited institutional resources, low-income populations often rely on social networks to improve their socioeconomic outcomes. However, it remains in question whether small-scale social interactions could affect large-scale economic inequalities in under-resourced contexts. Here, we leverage population-level data from one of the poorest South African settings to construct a large-scale, geographically defined, inter-household social network. Using a multilevel network model, we show that having social ties in close geographic proximity is associated with stable household asset conditions…

Relations among loneliness, social anxiety, and problematic Internet use.

The model of problematic Internet use advanced and tested in the current study proposes that individuals' psychosocial well-being, along with their beliefs about interpersonal communication (both face-to-face and online) are important cognitive predictors of negative outcomes arising from Internet use. The study examined the extent to which social anxiety explains results previously attributed to loneliness as a predictor of preference for online social interaction and problematic Internet use. The results support the hypothesis that the relationship between loneliness and preference for onlin…

Lateralized and bilateral sensory mechanisms independently regulate sociability and social preference in Drosophila.

Social behavior involves sociability-the drive to interact-and social preference-the choice of partners. Using FlySocialer, an automated system for tracking group interactions, we analyzed male Drosophila melanogaster and found highly individualized, non-random social behaviors. Compared to randomized controls, flies showed stable individual differences in sociability and distinct partner preferences. Sociability exhibited a sensory-specific lateralized asymmetry: visual inputs via the left eye modulated interaction number, while olfactory inputs via the left antenna influenced interaction dur

Negative Parenting Moderates the Prospective Association of ADHD Symptoms and Youth Social Problems.

Although ADHD and negative parenting are established predictors of youth outcomes, their independent and interactive effects on youth social functioning remain unclear. We tested childhood ADHD symptoms and negative parenting as independent and interactive predictors of prospective change in social problems across a four-year follow-up. At baseline, families of 221 (33% female) children with (n = 94) and without ADHD were rigorously assessed including observed positive and negative parenting behavior, youth ADHD symptoms, as well as multi-informant ratings of youth social problems at multiple

Behavioral assessment of social anxiety in females with Turner or fragile X syndrome.

Social skills impairment in children with Turner or fragile X syndrome has been documented using parental reports. Anxiety, shyness, and difficulty understanding social cues have been reported for females with Turner syndrome; whereas social withdrawal, avoidance of social interactions, and anxiety are often reported for females with fragile X syndrome. Social interaction anxiety in these two populations may be a framework for understanding the difficulty these children experience in social situations. In the present study, 29 females with Turner syndrome and 21 females with fragile X syndrome…

Monoacylglycerol lipase inhibition alters social behavior in male and female rats after post-weaning social isolation.

Post-weaning social isolation (PSI) has been shown to increase aggressive behavior and alter medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) function in rats. The present study sought to determine whether this phenotype would be normalized by increasing levels of the endocannabinoid 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) using pharmacological inhibition of monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL). Male and female Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to either 4 weeks of PSI or social rearing (SR) starting on postnatal day 21, then underwent a 15 min trial of social interaction with a novel, same-sex juvenile rat. Rats were administ…

Exploring communication and interaction skills at work among participants in individual placement and support.

BACKGROUND: Not all people with severe mental illness who attend Individual Placement and Support (IPS) gain and keep their jobs or work full time. Research has indicated a relationship between social disabilities and work performance in this group, and that support provided is often directed towards the social work environment. However, relationships between social skills performed in an authentic work setting and vocational outcomes have not been explored. OBJECTIVES: To explore relationships between social communication and interaction skills and vocational outcomes among IPS service users

Emotional consistency guides social engagement in 18- to 24-month-old toddlers.

This study investigated toddlers' sensitivity to emotional consistency and its influence on social engagement. Sixty-eight toddlers of diverse ethnic backgrounds (39 females; 338-908 days old; 79.4% White; and collected in 2024) watched videos depicting adults expressing emotions toward novel objects. The expression valence was either consistent (e.g., always positive toward Object A) or inconsistent (e.g., both positive and negative toward Object A). Eighteen- to 24-month-olds exhibited distinct looking when learning the consistent versus inconsistent informants (Cohen's d = 0.42) and showed

Multiparty Communication: A New Direction in Characterizing the Impact of Traumatic Brain Injury on Social Communication.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this viewpoint is to advocate for increased study of common ground and audience design processes in multiparty communication in traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHOD: Building on discussions at the 2024 International Cognitive-Communication Disorders Conference, we review common ground and audience design processes in dyadic and multiparty communication. We discuss how the diffuse profiles of neural and cognitive deficits place individuals with TBI at increased risk for keeping track of who knows what in group settings and using that knowledge to flexibly adapt their co

Anger in social anxiety disorder.

The present study focused on the emotional experience of anger among individuals with and without social anxiety disorder (SAD). Eighty-eight participants took part in the study, half (n = 44) met diagnostic criteria for SAD and half (n = 44) did not meet criteria for SAD. Participants completed a 21-day experience sampling measurement (ESM) in which they reported on daily social interactions and emotions. Using multilevel linear modeling we found that individuals with SAD experienced more anger compared to individuals without SAD. We also found a Diagnosis × Social Context interaction such th…

The Effect of Everyday-Life Social Contact on Pain.

Pain is a biopsychosocial phenomenon, resulting from the interplay between physiological and psychological processes and social factors. Giv … eryday life depends on numerous factors, including pain syndromes, temporal dynamics, the nature of social interactions, and characteristics of the interaction partners. In line with laboratory research, there is evidence that everyday-life social contact can alleviate, but also intensify pain, depending on the type of social support. Negative Schizotypy Mediates the Relationship Between Metacognition and Social Functioning in a Nonclinical Sample.

Reduced metacognitive abilities-difficulty making sense of and understanding oneself and others-have been found to be key predictors of social functioning across a range of clinical and nonclinical groups. However, the exact processes through which metacognition impacts social functioning are unclear. This study examined whether subclinical negative symptoms mediated the relationship between metacognition and social functioning in a nonclinical sample of young adults (n = 98). Results demonstrated that lower metacognitive mastery was found to be uniquely associated with greater subclinical neg

Assessing the diametrical model of schizotypal and autistic traits in emotion recognition and social functioning in a community sample.

BACKGROUND: Some research suggests that schizotypal and autistic traits can produce opposing effects on the mentalizing domain of social cognition. Although such findings support a diametrical model proposing that psychotic and autistic traits represent opposite extremes of the social brain continuum, results from recent studies have been more inconsistent, and the applicability of this model to other social cognition domains remains unclear. To test the diametrical model more broadly, this study examined the interactions between schizotypal and autistic traits on emotion recognition and socia

Plasticity facilitates sustainable growth in the commons.

In the commons, communities whose growth depends on public good, individuals often rely on surprisingly simple strategies, or heuristics, to decide whether to contribute to the shared resource (at risk of exploitation by free-riders). Although this appears a limitation, we show here how four heuristics lead to sustainable growth when coupled to specific ecological constraints. The two simplest ones-contribute permanently or switch stochastically between contributing or not-are first shown to bring sustainability when the public good efficiently promotes growth. If efficiency declines and the c

Associations between social network characteristics and daily social experiences in later life: Evidence from ecological momentary assessment.

OBJECTIVES: Sociological theory posits that social networks function as enduring relational structures that constrain and enable everyday social interactions, yet empirical evidence linking network properties to real-time social exposures remains limited. To address this gap, this study examines how older adults' social networks are associated with their daily social experiences. METHODS: Using data from the Social Environment and Cognitive Health in Urban and Rural Areas (SECHURA) study, we combine egocentric network data (1,474 alters from 254 respondents) with ecological momentary assessme…
