The influence of educational transitions on loneliness and mental health from emerging adults' perspectives.

Educational transitions can influence loneliness and increase mental health issues for young people transitioning between educational stages. The aim was to explore the link between educational transitions and emerging adults' loneliness and mental health and how they perceive they can alleviate and/or improve these issues. Semi-structured qualitative interviews with a total of 12 emerging adults, 10 females and two males aged 18-29 (mean age, 22.91) were conducted. Data were analysed using qualitative content analysis. Emerging adults' loneliness and mental health across educational transitio

[Close relationships in childhood and adulthood from the viewpoint of structural analysis of social behavior (SASB) and attachment theory].

Two theoretical approaches to interpersonal experiences and behavior are empirically related to each other: Structural Analysis of Social Behavior (SASB) and attachment theory. The focus is on the most important relationships during life-span: relationships with mother and father in childhood, which were measured retrospectively, and romantic relationships in adulthood. 93 outpatients of a psychosomatic clinic took part in the study. Self-report measures were used to assess SASB-dimensions affiliation and autonomy and attachment variables (Intrex short form, Short measure of attachment to pare

The relationship between job search skills and employability for persons with mild mental retardation.

Persons with mental retardation who possess applicable adaptive skills are usually able to obtain jobs in labor markets. However, some persons who show high scores with social and prevocational skills are unable to obtain jobs and the reasons for their unemployability are unknown. Twelve subjects with mild retardation who failed to obtain jobs were evaluated for their social and prevocational skills at the Tokyo Metropolitan Rehabilitation Center for the Physically and Mentally Handicapped. The evaluation was performed using the Social and Prevocational Information Battery-Revised which was de

Social surveys of old age in Great Britain, 1945-58.

In Great Britain, since the end of the Second World War, the problems of old age have tended to supersede those of poverty and unemployment as the object of social studies. The following article assesses some of the most important findings of 33 surveys conducted between 1945 and 1958 investigating the social needs and circumstances of old people. The fact emerges that family ties are stronger than is perhaps realized and that most of the aged live a reasonably secure life within their families. It is pointed out, however, that a small minority exists whose distress is evident and who do not se

Hypertension in Young Adults: Social Determinants of Prevalence, Awareness, Treatment, and Control.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension prevalence remains high among US young adults, and the role of social needs in their hypertension management remains poorly understood. METHODS: Data from 2017 to 2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (N = 8,024, representing 244 million adults) were used to study hypertension, defined per 2017 ACC/AHA guidelines or self-report of blood pressure-lowering medications. Prevalences of hypertension, awareness of condition, treatment if aware, and control if treated were estimated among young (18-39 years), middle-aged (40-64 years), and older adults (≥65

Impacts of Colorado's Regional Health Connector Workforce on Health-Related Social Needs and Health Equity.

BACKGROUND: Workforce roles that address social determinants of health, such as regional health connectors (RHCs), can reduce health inequities that disproportionately affect people of lower socioeconomic status and marginalized communities. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this evaluation was to describe, from the perspective of RHCs' community partners, 1) strategies that RHCs employ, 2) social needs that RHCs address, and 3) outcomes associated with RHCs' community efforts. METHODS: This convergent mixed-methods evaluation included a cross-sectional statewide survey of Colorado RHC partners followe

Adaptation of a social vulnerability index for measuring social frailty among East African women.

BACKGROUND: The number of older women living with HIV in Africa is growing, and their health outcomes may be adversely impacted by social frailty, which reflects deficits in social resources that accumulate over the lifespan. Our objective was to adapt a Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) originally developed in Canada for use in a study of older women living with or without HIV infection in Mombasa, Kenya. METHODS: We adapted the SVI using a five-step process: formative qualitative work, translation into Kiswahili, a Delphi procedure, exploration of potential SVI items in qualitative work, and

scientific, social, ecological rationality and public attitudes toward genetically modified food in China: based on the survey of urban residents in three cities of China.

Genetically modified (GM) technology is crucial for global food security, but its acceptance is often constrained by public attitudes. This study investigates how three types of rationality (scientific, social, and ecological) are associated with attitudes toward GM food in China, and examines the mediating role of institutional trust. Based on questionnaire data from 1020 Chinese urban residents, structural equation modeling showed that scientific rationality was positively associated with perceived benefits but not with perceived risks. Social rationality was negatively associated with perce

Othering and agency erosion of older adults living in extreme poverty in Bangladesh.

Offering fresh perspectives on the lived experience of ageing in extreme poverty, this article delves into unpacking the relationally driven processes of social, institutional, and self-othering that contribute to agency erosion in older adults. Positing that the context of extreme poverty in which a person ages is micropolitically shaped, where society, institutions, and ageing self interact in a complex way, it is argued that ageing in extreme poverty, inter alia, means ageing in subaltern conditions. A critical consequence of this process is the subjugation of older adults, leading to a lif

Association between attachment anxiety and the gaze direction-related N170.

Attachment theory suggests that interindividual differences in attachment security versus insecurity (anxiety and avoidance) contribute to the ways in which people perceive social emotional signals, particularly from the human face. Among different facial features, eye gaze conveys crucial information for social interaction, with a straight gaze triggering different cognitive and emotional processes as compared to an averted gaze. It remains unknown, however, how interindividual differences in attachment associate with early face encoding in the context of a straight versus averted gaze. Using

How does a nature-based solution for flood control compare to a technical solution? Case study evidence from Belgium.

The strategy of reconnecting rivers with their floodplains currently gains popularity because it not only harnesses natural capacities of floodplains but also increases social co-benefits and biodiversity. In this paper, we present an example of a successfully implemented nature-based solution (NBS) in the Dijle valley in the centre of Belgium. The research objective is to retrospectively assess cost and benefit differences between a technical solution (storm basins) and an alternative NBS, here the restoration of the alluvial floodplain. The method is a comparative social cost-benefit analysi

A mixed methods examination of adolescents' reasons for pretending to text.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to examine reasons adolescents give for pretending to text in various social situations. Pretending to text was conceptualized as when a person uses a cellphone to make it look like they are texting, but they are not actually sending messages. Little research is available from the adolescent perspective regarding self-presentation and avoidance when using digital devices in social contexts. METHODS: A convergent mixed methods approach was used to understand the experience of high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors (n = 216) in the United States

Post-civil war adaptation and need in Managua, Nicaragua.

Within seven years after the end of the Nicaraguan civil war in 1990, forced migrants, whose lives had been most disrupted by the conflict, were self-settled in a squatter community in the capital city of Managua and lived in extreme poverty with minimal health, education, security and social service supports. Compared with voluntary migrant neighbours, whose lives had been less affected by the conflict, forced migrants exhibited equal clinically significant symptoms of physical and mental health and psychosocial maladaptation. These findings run counter to generally held theory and assumption

Bioterrorism - Health emergency preparedness and response.

Health emergency planning for preparedness and response against acts of terrorism, including the malfeasant threat or actual release of biological agents designed to harm others, has assumed a higher level of concern for most western nations, including Canada, following the explosive attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001. These terrorist attacks were followed by an outbreak of anthrax infections. The Bacillus anthracis spores in these attacks were dispersed by using regular postal services in the United States. In addition to the unsettling sense of social vulnerability that resul

Justifying violence and hostility through discourse: A critical discursive psychology analysis of anti-refugee hostility on social media during disasters.

Disasters create a fertile context for the scapegoating of minority groups, yet the discursive strategies used to legitimize this hostility remain understudied. This study addresses this gap by analysing how anti-refugee sentiment is discursively justified on social media during a crisis. We investigated how language on social media is used to legitimize hostility against refugees during disasters. Using a critical discursive psychology (CDP) approach, we analysed 345 posts on X that targeted Afghan refugees during the devastating July 2021 wildfires in Türkiye. Our analysis identifies three k
