Rising and falling on the social ladder: The bidimensional social mobility beliefs scale.

Recent works in the field of Social Psychology have shown the importance of studying subjective social mobility from different perspectives. In the literature about subjective societal mobility, most of the research is focused on the mobility-immobility framing. However, several authors suggested studying social mobility beliefs effects differentiating according to mobility's trajectory, that is, upward (i.e., improving status over time) and downward (i.e., getting worse in status over time). The present research was motivated by the lack of measures that discriminate between beliefs in upward

Associations between Cumulative Social Determinants of Health and Stroke Prevalence in US Adults: NHANES 2005-2018.

INTRODUCTION: Social determinants of health (SDoH) are increasingly recognized as key contributors to stroke prevalence, yet few studies have examined their cumulative impact. This study aimed to evaluate the associations between multiple SDoH and stroke prevalence, and identify the primary drivers of cumulative social disadvantage. METHODS: We analyzed data from 26,703 participants in the 2005-2018 NHANES cycles. Stroke history was self-reported. Eight SDoH indicators - including income, education, employment, food security, housing stability, marital status, healthcare access, and insurance

Social determinants as pathways in disparities in oral cavity cancer stage at diagnosis: a registry-based analysis from 2010-2020.

PURPOSE: Racial and ethnic differences in oral cavity cancer (OCC) stage at diagnosis are substantial, but the reasons remain unclear. We assessed insurance status and social neighborhood factors as potential pathways. METHODS: Using the Texas Cancer Registry, we identified adults diagnosed with OCC between 2010 and 2020. We examined the crude and multivariable associations of race and ethnicity, insurance status, and social neighborhood factors with stage at diagnosis. We investigated the mediating effects of insurance status and neighborhood-level social factors on racial and ethnic differe

A biopsychosocial approach to improving multidimensional frailty status in community-dwelling older adults: a protocol for a cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Frailty is a significant clinical syndrome affecting aging populations, leading to increased risks of negative outcomes such as falls, disability, hospitalization, and premature mortality. The concept has evolved from a simplistic view to a complex view that incorporates physical, psychological, cognitive, and social domains. Early intervention is crucial, yet research on the interactions among these domains is limited. This study protocol aims to outline various combinations of biological, psychosocial and nutritional interventions in prefrail older adults to address their effects

Can executive functions explain the relationship between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and social adjustment?

This study examined the ability of executive functions (EF) to account for the relationship between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) status and social adjustment as indexed by parent and teacher report and by performance on a standardized observational "chat room" task. Children with the Combined subtype (ADHD-C; n = 23), the Primarily Inattentive Subtype (ADHD-I; n = 33), and non-ADHD controls (n = 36) participated. EF did not mediate the relationship between ADHD status and parent or teacher report of social adjustment. EF accounted for about 40-50% of the variance between ADH

Phenotypic age acceleration through a lens of intersectional inequalities in the German National Cohort (NAKO).

PURPOSE: Biological aging differences are linked to sociodemographic characteristics, but how intersecting social dimensions shape these differences remains unclear. Integrating aging biology and intersectionality theory, we examined the joint influence of multiple social determinants on phenotypic age acceleration (biological vs. chronological age). METHODS: Using data from 173,925 participants in the German NAKO study, we calculated phenotypic age acceleration based on blood-based biomarkers and created 72 intersectional social strata based on sociodemographic factors. We assessed differenc

A role for self-regulatory control in the absence of ingroup preference.

One of psychology's most ubiquitous findings is that of robust ingroup preference, an explicitly stated human preference for the groups to which we belong. The advent of implicit measures of social cognition introduced a paradoxical result: Compared to members of higher-status groups, members of lower-status groups often show no implicit ingroup preference, sometimes even showing outgroup preference, a result rarely observed on explicit measures. Prevailing theories have provided macro-level accounts, often in terms of system-justifying tendencies, but the various cognitive processes that coul

The role of poverty-related social determinants in maternal and perinatal health inequities: a cross-sectional study using the eLIXIR born in South London, UK maternity-child data linkage.

BACKGROUND: Evidence on how poverty and social determinants influence adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes in the UK is limited. While ethnicity and area-level deprivation are well described, fewer studies examine the cumulative impact of poverty-related factors such as low income, employment insecurity, housing, and access to social support. METHODS: We analysed 67,308 pregnancies from the eLIXIR cohort using linked NHS records. Social determinants were defined using the WHO framework as structural (ethnicity, migration status, area deprivation) and intermediary (housing, employment, fina

Negotiating political power and stigma around fragile X Syndrome in a rural village in Cameroon: A tale of a royal family and a community.

BACKGROUND: Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) is a neurogenetic condition that significantly impacts the lives of affected individuals and their families due to its association with intellectual disability (ID) and stigma. METHOD: In this paper, we present the findings of an ethnographic study in the community of a patient who received a genetic diagnosis for FXS in Cameroon. This study builds on data from 28 participants of a royal family and 58 from the community who participated in 20 in-depth interviews and nine focus group discussions. RESULTS: We identified two types of stigma in this community

Closing the (incarceration) gap: assessing the socio-economic and clinical indicators of indigenous males by lifetime incarceration status.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 1 in 5 to 1 in 6 Indigenous Australian males are currently imprisoned or have previously been imprisoned. Recent work has also pointed to a widening socio-economic gap within the Indigenous population. Given the myriad social, wellbeing and environmental risk factors associated with justice-involvement, it is conceivable that incarceration may contribute to the increasing disparities found within the Indigenous population. This study aimed to explore the presence and extent of an 'incarceration gap' within the Indigenous population and to uncover which social factors

[The evaluation of perceived responsibility among obsessive-compulsive patients].

Although many authors agree that excessive responsibility is associated with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), some believe that the manifestations of responsibility are more easily observed among patients suffering from checking compulsions (36, 42). This study compares a group of obsessive-compulsive patients that have been sub-divided into three groups (washers, checkers, ruminators) with a group of normal volunteers that are healthy with regards to responsibility. The sample consisted of 58 adults who meet diagnostic criteria for OCD and 20 normal individuals. During an individual inter

Do negative emotions mediate the association between socioeconomic status and health?

In this chapter, we examine the possibility that negative emotions contribute to the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and health. A model of the associations among SES, emotion, and health is presented first. We then review the evidence for this model, showing associations of SES with depression, hopelessness, anxiety, and hostile affect and cognition, and of these negative emotions with disease. Notably, most of the data supporting the model provide only indirect evidence that negative emotions serve as a key contributor to the proposed associations. We, therefore, conclude wit

Unemployment and psychiatric distress: social resources and coping.

Unemployment is viewed as one of the more stressful of life events that an adult can experience. Job loss leads to decreased social status, disrupts family and social roles, produces financial strain, and loss of self esteem, all of which have detrimental consequences for mental health. We studied psychiatric symptoms in 269 unemployed adults with dependent children in Baltimore; one-half of the sample had returned to work 1 year following unemployment. A comparison group of 92 community residents who were continuously employed were also interviewed. Using a stressful life events perspective, …

Social Deprivation and Peripheral Artery Disease.

The link between peripheral artery disease and socioeconomic status is complex. The objective of this narrative review is to explore that relationship in detail, including how social factors affect the development, management, and outcomes of peripheral artery disease. Although the current literature on this topic is limited, some patterns do emerge. Populations of low socioeconomic status appear to be at increased risk for the development of peripheral artery disease, owing to factors such as increased prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors (eg, cigarette smoking) and decreased access to c

Social and emotional adjustment in children affected with Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome: associations with ADHD and family functioning. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

This study examined social-emotional functioning in children with Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (TS) alone and children with TS and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In addition, the contribution of family functioning to social competence was examined. Children with a clinical diagnosis of TS were recruited from the Yale Child Study Center TS specialty clinic. Unaffected control children were recruited through newspaper advertisements and announcements within the university and at area schools. The final sample consisted of 72 children (45 boys and 27 girls) between the ages

Childlessness and Mental Health Among U.S. Older Adults: Do Associations Differ by Marital Status and Gender?

OBJECTIVES: An estimated 17% of U.S. adults ages 55+ are childless, a fraction that has increased across recent cohorts. Most studies find no or negligible mental health consequences of childlessness for older adults, yet studies typically compare broad categories of childless persons and parents, neglecting potentially important sources of heterogeneity. We evaluate associations between parental status (childless, biological children, stepchildren only, no living children) and 3 dimensions of mental health (depressive symptoms, and social and emotional loneliness) and how these patterns diffe
