The Moderating Effect of Social Capital on the Relationship Between Distress Tolerance and Problem Drinking.

BACKGROUND: Social capital may serve as a contextual factor in the relationship between distress tolerance and problem drinking. OBJECTIVES: This study examined the moderating effect of social capital on the relationship between distress tolerance and problem drinking among adults. METHODS: An online self-report survey was conducted among 350 participants aged 19-64 years. After excluding 20 insufficient or careless responses, data from 330 participants were analyzed. The moderating effects were examined using PROCESS macro Model 1 for SPSS version 4.2. RESULTS: Distress tolerance significa

Mental health and the role of social support in the lives of vulnerabilized sexual minority women.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual minority women (SMW; women who self-identify as lesbian, queer, etc., as well as heterosexually-identified women who experience attraction to romantic or sexual partnerships with women) and vulnerabilized women (those marginalized due to structural forces such as housing insecurity, violence, sex exchange, drug use, or HIV positive status) experience a range of mental health challenges compared to their heterosexual and general population counterparts. General populations studies show a positive relationship between social support and mental health; less is known about SMW

The child and adolescent social support scale: Assessing four types of perceived support from five sources.

The Child and Adolescent Social Support Scale (CASSS) is one of the most commonly used measures of perceived social support with children and adolescents. The psychometric properties supporting the subscales representing the various sources of support are well-established. However, less support is available for the subscales representing the various types of support within support sources. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the degree to which the empirically derived dimensions of the CASSS align with its multidimensional theoretical framework consisting of four types of perce

Social connection and mortality in UK Biobank: a prospective cohort analysis.

BACKGROUND: Components of social connection are associated with mortality, but research examining their independent and combined effects in the same dataset is lacking. This study aimed to examine the independent and combined associations between functional and structural components of social connection and mortality. METHODS: Analysis of 458,146 participants with full data from the UK Biobank cohort linked to mortality registers. Social connection was assessed using two functional (frequency of ability to confide in someone close and often feeling lonely) and three structural (frequency of f

Social provision partially mediates the complex associations among posttraumatic stress, obsessive-compulsive and depressive symptoms in traumatized patients.

AIM: To identify the associations among posttraumatic stress, depressive and obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) in outpatients with psychological trauma and to examine the mediating effect of social provision. BACKGROUND: Psychologically traumatized patients simultaneously experience depressive and OCS. Social provision may mediate multiple symptoms differently compared with social support. DESIGN: Cross-sectional and correlational study. METHODS: Data were collected between August 2016-May 2017. Psychiatric outpatients (N = 151) completed a structured questionnaire consisting of the Korea

Structural violence and schizophrenia.

Despite clear evidence of a substantial biological basis to schizophrenia, there is also evidence that social, economic and political factors have considerable relevance to the clinical features, treatment and outcome of the illness. Individuals from lower socio-economic groups have an earlier age at first presentation and longer durations of untreated illness, both of which are associated with poor outcome. Individuals with schizophrenia are over-represented in the homeless population. Migration is associated with increased rates of mental illness, including schizophrenia, and this relationsh

Social anxiety disorder: a critical overview of neurocognitive research.

Social anxiety is a common disorder characterized by a persistent and excessive fear of one or more social or performance situations. Behavioral inhibition is one of the early indicators of social anxiety, which later in life may advance into a certain personality structure (low extraversion and high neuroticism) and the development of maladaptive cognitive biases. While there are several effective psycho- and pharmacotherapy options, a large number of patients benefit insufficiently from these therapies. Brain and neuroendocrine research can help uncover both the biological basis of social an

Kajal-induced Artefact Simulating a Ciliary Body Tumor on Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

INTRODUCTION: Although biomedical HIV prevention efforts have seen a number of recent promising developments, behavioural interventions have often been described as failing. However, clear lessons have been identified from past efforts, including the need to address influential social, economic and legal structures; to tailor efforts to local contexts; and to address multiple influencing factors in combination. Despite these insights, there remains a pervasive strategy to try to achieve sexual behaviour change through single, decontextualized, interventions or sets of activities. With current

Social Isolation and Child Maltreatment Among Japanese Mothers: Focus on Loneliness, Social Support, and Social Cohesion.

Background/Objectives: Social isolation is a significant risk factor for child maltreatment. However, few studies have examined this relationship across multiple ecological levels, including neighborhood, family, and individual factors. This cross-sectional study operationalized social isolation using social cohesion, social support, and loneliness, and aimed to examine how their inter-relationships influence child maltreatment among Japanese mothers. Methods: Data were collected through an anonymous online survey of 330 Japanese mothers of children aged under six years, conducted April-May 20

Staging and Grading in Gerodontology-An Introduction.

INTRODUCTION: Gerodontology lacks a unified framework to describe case complexity and assess the multidimensional determinants shaping oral health. METHODS: An international initiative developed an evidence-based case definition for staging and grading older adults' oral health. RESULTS: Staging includes three domains: person, oral function (clinical and subjective), and oral disease (caries, periodontal disease, mucosal conditions) level staging. Grading incorporates risk factors at the oral, systemic, and social levels, including caries and periodontal risk, prosthetic maintenance, xerosto

Risk and Emotion Among Healthy Volunteers in Clinical Trials.

Theorized as objective or constructed, risk is recognized as unequally distributed across social hierarchies. Yet the process by which socia … cle examines emotion and risk as mutually constituting processes linked to biographical context and social structure. Biographical events like economic insecurity and incarceration influence how risk is felt by providing comparative experiences of felt risk and felt benefits. Such events, in turn, are structured by class-based and racial inequalities, linking clas …

Social anxiety across ethnicity: a confirmatory factor analysis of the FNE and SAD.

Previous research has established that social anxiety occurs at different rates in African American and European American populations (Grant et al., 2005), while psychometric investigations of widely used measures of psychopathology show differences in factor structure based on ethnic background (Carter, Miller, Sbrocco, Suchday, & Lewis, 1999; Chapman, Williams, Mast, & Woodruff-Borden, 2009). The current study examined response characteristics of 1276 African American and European American undergraduates completing the Fear of Negative Evaluation and Social Avoidance and Distress Scales (Wat

[Time-organization of EEG patterns' structure in anxiety and phobic disorders].

Thirty-five patients, aged 19-48 years (mean age 38 years) with anxiety and phobic disorders were examined. According to ICD-10 criteria--social phobia (F40.1), panic disorder (F41.0), somatoform autonomic dysfunction (F45.3) were diagnosed. Using electroencephalography data, qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the time- and spatial-organization of brain EEG activity in anxiety and phobic disorders of different severity were established. It were determined 4 types of wave interactions between EEG components, which reflected a different extent of the regulatory mechanisms lesions: 2

The development and validation of the Social Attributions for Mental Illness (SAMI) scale.

Existing measures of lay causal attributions for mental illness do not discriminate between the diverse array of social factors known to influence mental health. Moreover, while ample research has emphasised the negative stigma consequences of biological attributions, limited research investigates how different social attributions might relate to stigma attitudes. The study developed and validated a novel scale to measure lay social attributions for various categories of mental illness. Scale items were generated via data triangulation from an online qualitative survey, a rapid umbrella litera

Network Effects of Demographic Transition.

Traditional human societies use two of biology's solutions to reduce free-riding: by collaborating with relatives, they rely on the mechanism of kin-selection, and by forming highly clustered social kin-networks, they can efficiently use reputation dynamics. Both of these solutions assume the presence of relatives. This paper shows how social networks change during demographic transition. With falling fertility, there are fewer children that could be relatives to one another. As the missing kin are replaced by non-kin friends, local clustering in the social network drops. This effect is compou

Social network support for individuals receiving opiate substitution treatment and its association with treatment progress.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Social networks have been hypothesized to protect people from the harmful effects of stress, but may also provide dysfunctional role models and provide cues associated with drug use. This study describes the range, type and level of social support available to patients engaged in UK opiate substitution treatment (OST) programmes, and explores the association between network factors and continued use of illicit heroin. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of a randomly selected sample of OST patients (n = 118) utilised measures of current substance use and social network structur

An historical and developmental analysis of social model programs.

This review synthesizes the philosophy, development, history, and current status of the philosophy of social or community model of recovery and of Social Model Programs (SMPs) based on an analysis of the available literature, much of it outside traditional sources. The social-community model of recovery evolved out of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), and has a distinctive program philosophy with different assumptions, knowledge, and practice than professionally based treatment models. SMPs began in the 1940s in California, evolving by the 1980s into a continuum of recovery services that are publicly

Social cognition in an adult epilepsy patient with developmental amnesia.

Reports on social cognition in patients with developmental amnesia resulting from bilateral hippocampal lesions are rare, although the link between social cognition and temporal lobe structures is well established. We present the case of a 23-year-old male epilepsy patient, BM, with developmental amnesia due to perinatal cerebral hypoxia. The patient was examined with neuroimaging and neuropsychological methods and compared to IQ-matched patients with epilepsy to control for effects of epilepsy. In addition, we used a test battery that evaluates emotion recognition and theory of mind to study

Unprotected sex of homeless youth: results from a multilevel dyadic analysis of individual, social network, and relationship factors.

Homeless youth have elevated risk of HIV through sexual behavior. This project investigates the multiple levels of influence on unprotected sex among homeless youth, including social network, individual, and partner level influences. Findings are based on analyses of an exploratory, semi-structured interview (n = 40) and a structured personal network interview (n = 240) with randomly selected homeless youth in Los Angeles. Previous social network studies of risky sex by homeless youth have collected limited social network data from non-random samples and have not distinguished sex partner infl
