Measurement properties of the PBC-40 and PBC-27: a Dutch validation study.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) have an impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Practice guidelines recommend evaluating the HRQoL in all patients with PBC. The aim of this study was to assess the reliability and validity of our Dutch translation of the PBC-40, a PBC-specific measure of the HRQoL. DESIGN: The PBC-40 was translated into Dutch following standardised forward-backward procedures. Participants received the Dutch PBC-40 and the RAND-36 (a validated Dutch version of the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey) through postal mail. The PBC-27 is an abridg

The Kessler psychological distress scale: translation and validation of an Arabic version.

BACKGROUND: The Kessler Psychological Distress Scale has been widely used in assessing psychological distress among general and clinical populations from different cultural backgrounds. To our knowledge, however, researchers have not yet validated any translated versions in Arabic. The purpose of this study was to test the reliability and validity of Arabic translations of the ten item (K10) and six item (K6) versions among public sector employees in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. METHODS: As part of a larger research project on life satisfaction, researchers collected data from 234 Pa

Linking financial socialization to financial well-being: A dual-stage SEM-ANN approach in India.

The present research focuses on the impact of financial socialization on the financial well-being within the framework of an emerging economy, i.e., India, with particular attention to individuals navigating the early stages of financial independence. The study is carried out by adopting two stages of analysis using data from a survey conducted among 375 respondents. The hypothesized relationships were first examined using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM), and then an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) was used to validate the findings and assess the relative signific

Exploring Ways to Reduce Heavy Drinking by Increasing Hope Among Midlife Women in Australia: Protocol for a Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption remains a major societal problem, contributing to myriad health conditions. Australian midlife women (aged 45-64 years) consume more alcohol than previous generations of midlife women and more than younger women now. Alcohol poses health risks that are unique to midlife women, including increased risk of breast cancer; 10% of breast cancers result from alcohol consumption and there is no "safe" limit. There is a global gap in knowledge about socially and culturally appropriate interventions for reducing alcohol consumption in these heavy-drinking groups of midli

Camouflaging and autism: Conceptualisation and methodological issues.

It has been suggested that there is poor clarity of the 'camouflaging' concept in autism research, and potential confounding of its measurement tools, such as the Camouflaging Autistic Traits Questionnaire (CAT-Q). A critical review of 389 studies was conducted to investigate these potential conceptual and methodological issues. The findings question whether the same construct has been investigated across studies, as there is inconsistency in: (a) which terms are used; (b) reference made to established conceptual literature; (c) how terms are used (e.g. interchangeably or distinctly); and (d)

Refinement and Validation of a New Patient-Reported Experience Measure for Hearing Loss (My Hearing PREM).

CONTEXT: Patient-reported experience measures (PREMs) generate insights into daily challenges experienced when living with a chronic condition and experiences of care. There are no validated PREMs to measure the experience of hearing loss. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of a newly developed tool, 'My Hearing PREM', designed to assess the experience of living with hearing loss and receiving audiology care. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Adults with hearing loss (n = 401) were recruited from audiology clinics in Scotland and England, and non-clinical ro

Persistent barriers to the use of maternal, newborn and child health services in Garissa sub-county, Kenya: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: North Eastern Kenya has persistently had poor maternal, new-born and child health (MNCH) indicators. Barriers to access and utilisation of MNCH services are structural, individual and community-level factors rooted in sociocultural norms. A package of interventions was designed and implemented in Garissa sub-County aimed at creating demand for services. Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) were trained to generate demand for and facilitate access to MNCH care in communities, while health care providers were trained on providing culturally acceptable and sensitive services. Can AI-driven games enhance social skills for autistic children? - A three-level meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Gamified interventions for autistic children are becoming increasingly diverse, enhancing their presence, immersion, and sense of accomplishment to improve various social skill indicators. Existing systematic reviews have primarily evaluated intervention effectiveness from the perspectives of game design and intervention objectives. However, these findings are inconsistent and fail to inspect specific improvements in social skills among autistic children. METHODS: To address this gap, this study adopts a three-level meta-analysis approach from the perspective of AI-driven games, e

"There's More to It Than Just a Box Check ": Measuring Prison Climate in Three Correctional Facilities.

The imperative to heed social environment and power of the situation, particularly as applied to prison settings, dates to the 1971 Stanford Prison Experiment; the widely cited study concluded that situational factors, not personality, created the damaging conditions observed. Despite critical need for research on prison climate, measurement has met stiff challenges, and little research on prison culture exists in the United States. This study applies a 17-item scale, primarily based on Essen Climate Evaluation Schema (EssenCES), an instrument validated in Australia, Germany, and the United Ki

Loneliness, social isolation, and living alone: a comprehensive systematic review, meta-analysis, and meta-regression of mortality risks in older adults.

Loneliness, social isolation, and living alone are significant risk factors for mortality, particularly in older adults. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to quantify their associations with all-cause and cause-specific mortality in older adults, broadening previous research by including more social factors. Comprehensive searches were conducted in PubMed, APA PsycINFO, and CINAHL until December 31, 2023, following PRISMA 2020 and MOOSE guidelines. Studies included were prospective cohort or longitudinal studies examining the relationship between loneliness, social isolation, livi

Assessing the Social and Environmental Impact of Healthcare Technologies: Towards an Extended Social Return on Investment.

Stroke is the third leading cause of death and disability overall worldwide. Upper limb impairment is a common consequence for stroke survivors, having negative impact on their quality of life. Robotic rehabilitation, through repetitive and monitored movements, can improve their status. Developed by a team of researchers at Politecnico di Milano, AGREE is an exoskeleton for upper limb rehabilitation at the stage gate between translational research and clinical validation. Since the cost of this device is particularly high, the present study aimed to provide a framework for assessing its value.

Confirmatory factor analysis of the post-event processing inventory in a community sample seeking self-help for social anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Post-event processing (PEP) refers to negative rumination following anxiety-inducing social situations. The Post-Event Processing Inventory (PEPI; Blackie & Kocovski, 2017, Development and validation of the trait and state versions of the post-event processing inventory. Anxiety, Stress, & Coping, 30, 202-218.) consists of both trait and state forms. Although the psychometric properties of the PEPI have been very good in past research, the factor structure of the scale was examined with student samples only. OBJECTIVES: The primary purpose of the present study was to confirm the f

Social cognition in bulimia nervosa: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Clinical accounts and previous evidence suggest that socio-emotional impairments may be present in people with bulimia nervosa (BN). The aim of this paper was to systematically review studies of social cognition, and to evaluate whether social cognitive deficits exist in BN. METHOD: Keywords were identified using an existing model of social cognition (Green et al., 2007) [16], and used to search for relevant papers in three online databases. Records were then screened according to a priori inclusion/exclusion criteria. RESULTS: Five papers reporting seven social cognition tasks we

Synergistic effects of group-based exercise to reduce loneliness and social isolation and to prevent cognitive decline among older adults with cancer.

The growing population of older cancer survivors faces an elevated risk of accelerated cognitive decline due to the combined effects of aging and cancer-related cognitive impairment. Loneliness and social isolation have also been linked to poorer cognitive outcomes and increased risk of Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD). At the same time, regular physical activity and social support interventions may improve cognitive function and reduce risk of cognitive decline. Despite these parallel lines of evidence, few interventions have addressed these modifiable risk factors simultaneou

Social perception in people with eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Social perception is a key aspect of social cognition which has so far not been investigated in eating disorders (ED). This study aimed to investigate social perception in individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). METHODS: Outpatients with AN (restricting subtype [AN-R]: n=51; binge-purge subtype [AN-BP]: n=26) or BN (n=57) and 50 healthy control (HC) participants completed the Interpersonal Perception Task (IPT-15). This is an ecologically valid task, which consists of 15 video clips, depicting complex social situations relating to intimacy, status, kinship,

Social frailty independently predicts 9-year mortality among community-dwelling older adults in Mexico: validation of a brief social frailty index.

INTRODUCTION: Social frailty, defined as deficits in social resources, roles, and engagement, is an emerging risk dimension. However, evidence on its measurement and prognostic value in Latin America is limited. METHODS: Using nationally representative data from the Mexican Health and Aging Study (2012-2021), we adapted a five-item Social Frailty Index (SFI) and evaluated its psychometric properties and association with 9-year all-cause mortality in 5,400 community-dwelling adults aged ≥60 years. RESULTS: At baseline, 38.9% were pre-frail (SFI = 1) and 25.2% were frail (SFI ≥ 2). Mortality i

Schizophrenia is a chronic debilitating disorder with a wide spectrum of clinical phenomenology, of which the positive signs, delusions and haLLucinations are best known. The cognitive deficit in schizophrenia patients is one of the prominent dimensions of the disorder The deficit starts early in the course of the disease even before the other signs manifest, it is profound and pervasive and involves several skills including the working memory, attention, learning and social functioning. The current pharmacotherapy for schizophrenia does not affect the cognitive status. Moreover, it appears th

Caregiver-perceived behavioral challenges in fragile X syndrome and implications for measuring treatment benefit in clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) is a rare X-linked genetic condition. Children with FXS exhibit a variety of challenging behaviors such as irritability, anxiety, and preference for solitary activities. The Aberrant Behavior Checklist-Community (ABC-C) is an observer-reported outcome (ObsRO) measure that captures many of the behavioral concerns (e.g., outbursts, social anxiety, difficulty connecting with others) salient to caregivers of individuals with FXS. An FXS-specific scoring algorithm of the ABC-C, considered more representative of the FXS phenotype (ABC-CFXS), has been included in

What do students really gain from physical education? The QPE4PLimpact as a situational measure of physical literacy in high school.

INTRODUCTION: Existing physical literacy (PL) assessment tools primarily evaluate enduring traits and provide limited insight into students' immediate experiences during physical education (PE) lessons. This study aimed to develop and validate the QPE4PLimpact, a questionnaire designed to assess the situational impact of PE lessons on high school students' PL. Grounded in a monist and phenomenological perspective, PL was conceptualized as an embodied and contextual construct encompassing physical, psychological-affective, cognitive, and social domains. METHODS: Questionnaire development follo
