Within-field soil management in Precision Agriculture is still largely based on scalar observations or on geostatistical modelling of individual curve parameters, despite the inherently functional nature of many soil properties. This study proposes a geostatistical framework for the spatial modelling and zoning of function-valued soil descriptors, explicitly accounting for data heterogeneity, spatial non-stationarity, and multiscale variability. Two agronomically relevant functional responses are considered: soil penetration resistance as a function of soil moisture and soil water retention as…

The global spread of multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) poses serious threats to public health and food safety. In this study, the antibacterial potential of the anthraquinone compound 13394-2, derived from soil actinomycetes, was systematically evaluated. In vitro, 13394-2 exhibited potent activity (MIC as low as 0.25 μg/mL), rapid bactericidal effects, biofilm clearance, and concentration-dependent killing. Mechanistic studies revealed that membrane disruption, ROS accumulation, and ATP depletion are key bactericidal pathways leading to metabolic collapse. Transcriptomic, compu…

Background/Objectives: Soil microbiomes in agroecosystems are natural reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs), creating conditions for horizontal gene transfer (HGT) to clinically relevant bacteria. Southern West Siberia-a globally significant grain-producing region-lacks metagenomic characterization of its soil resistome. This study aimed to establish the first baseline profile of resistome and mobilome composition for West Siberian agricultural soils. Methods: Twelve composite soil samples were collected from agroecosystems under seven crop types a…

Pyrene accumulates in soil from a variety of sources, infiltrating the food chain and causing mutagenic and carcinogenic disorders in humans. Pyrene has since been effectively removed from soil using a variety of chemical and physical remediation techniques, but these approaches have a number of disadvantages, including being costly, time-consuming, labor-intensive, and producing secondary environmental pollutants. Therefore, this work employed an environmentally friendly and sustainable biological approach that utilized enzyme immobilization on biochar. Wheat straw biochar prepared by pyrolys…

Convective storms can develop rapidly, creating hazards to local populations through intense precipitation, strong winds and lightning1. The large-scale environment in which thunderstorms develop is often well captured in forecast systems, yet predicting where individual storms will initiate remains a fundamental challenge. It is known that differential heating driven by soil moisture (SM) patterns creates atmospheric circulations that favour convective initiation over drier soils2,3, whereas wind shear between low and mid levels can enhance storm growth4,5. Here we show that the most extreme …

Soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration is vital for food security and climate mitigation. However, its long-term response to fertilisation remains unclear. Using the 180-year Broadbalk Experiment (the world's longest-running fertilisation trial; Rothamsted, UK), combined with 14C labelling and metagenomics, we identified fundamentally distinct mechanisms of SOC accumulation: a microbially mediated dual pathway under organic fertilisation versus a resource-limited pathway under inorganic fertilisation. Sustained organic inputs matched inorganic fertilisers in maintaining crop yields while incr…

Intensifying droughts are increasingly pushing ecosystems beyond functional thresholds, threatening carbon uptake, biodiversity, and ecosystem resilience. However, the dominant drivers and spatiotemporal patterns of ecological droughts remain poorly understood. Here, we develop an impact-based optimality framework to identify ecological droughts, quantify their impacts on ecosystem photosynthesis, and assess the relative roles of soil and atmospheric dryness using an ensemble of global observation-constrained datasets. We find that 52% of land areas experience ecological droughts driven by com…

Soil pollution, driven by industrialization and intensive agriculture, poses critical risks and global threats, with over 16% of global soils estimated to be contaminated by heavy metals, organic pollutants, and pesticides. This is impacting ecosystems, food security, and human health through bioaccumulation and carcinogenicity. Conventional remediation methods are often costly, destructive, and insufficient for deep and heterogenous contamination, often generating secondary waste and require long time for treatment. Nanotechnology introduces a paradigm shift, leveraging nanomaterials with hig…

Soil organic matter (SOM) is a key indicator for evaluating soil fertility and ecological functions, and hyperspectral technology provides an effective means for its rapid and non-destructive estimation. However, in practical soil systems, the spectral response of SOM is often highly covariant with mineral composition, moisture conditions, and soil structural characteristics. Under small-sample conditions, hyperspectral SOM modeling results are usually highly sensitive to spectral preprocessing methods, sample perturbations, and model architecture and parameter configurations, leading to fluct…

This study investigated the presence of microplastics (MPs, >5 μm to <2 mm) in biofertilizers and estimated their mass input to Swedish agricultural soils. Collective samples from representative biogas facilities were analyzed using optical microscopy and optical photothermal infrared (O-PTIR) spectroscopy, with selected MPs examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The highest MPs concentration detected was 888 items g-1. Preliminary observation indicates that MPs abundance was moderately correlated with the proportion of food waste used as biogas feedstock. Mass concentrations reached …

Soil extracellular enzymes (EES) regulate the formation of substrates available to soil microbes and nutrient release by catalyzing the degradation of complex macromolecules in organic matter. Therefore, EES are the key catalysts in the microbial-mediated biogeochemical cycling, playing an important role in regulating ecosystem functions. We reviewed the research advances in the formation, sources, classification, and functions of EES, ela-borated on their responses and feedback mechanisms to global changes (including climate change and human activities). Soil extracellular enzymes exhibit non…

Two Gram-staining positive, aerobic, non-motile, endospore-forming and rod-shaped bacteria, designated strains SI92T and SI8, respectively, were isolated from the rhizosphere soil of tobacco collected from south-western China. Strain SI92T shared the highest 16S rRNA gene similarity to Paenibacillus silvestris (97.9%) and Paenibacillus phytorum (97.9%), and strain SI8 showed the highest 16S rRNA gene similarity with P. phytorum (98.0%). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strains SI92T and SI8 clustered with the genus Paenibacillus and formed a distinct subclade.…

Secondary plastic nanoparticles (Sec-PNPs), produced by plastic weathering, are contaminants of emerging concern with poorly understood beha … terephthalate (PET), and environmentally aged landfill-derived PNPs. Column experiments in sand and soil show plastic- and medium-dependent behaviors, as evidenced by breakthrough curves and particle-size data. Aliphatic Sec-PNPs exhibit higher retention than aromatic Sec-PNPs due to hydrophobic interactions, with larger particles enriched in eluted fr …

Anthropogenic land formation has been shown to substantially alter terrestrial landscapes, impacting both soil properties and microbial communities. Nevertheless, the impact of anthropogenic land formation on greenhouse gas emissions and the underlying mechanisms were not fully elucidated. In this study, chronological sequences of soil samples were collected from a recently reclaimed land area at multiple intervals over a fifteen-year period. High-throughput sequencing was employed to analyze the composition of microbial communities, including bacteria, fungi, and protists. It was observed tha…

Ecosystem respiration (ER) is the largest source of biogenic CO2 to the atmosphere, and its temperature sensitivity (Q10) before reaching maximum values is crucial for understanding land-climate feedback. However, despite decades of studies showing that Q10 varies considerably across space, time, and biomes, the mechanisms underlying this variability remain unresolved. Here we demonstrate that global variation in Q10 can be reconciled within a unified hydrothermal framework. Using data from 142 eddy covariance sites around the world, we show that Q10 exhibits unimodal responses to soil moistur…

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) create an extended plant-soil interface (referred to as mycorrhizal hyphosphere) where specific microbial interactions shape key steps of the nitrogen (N) cycle. Extraradical hyphae of the AMF host diverse microbes that help mineralize organic substrates, regulate ammonium and nitrate transformations, and enhance N retention. These processes allow plants to access both inorganic N and the N released from complex organic compounds. This review synthesizes current evidence for AMF-microbe interactions in relation to mineralization, nitrification, denitrificatio…

Plant growth promoting microorganisms play a substantial role in current plant production practices. Yeasts have shown a promising role in enhancing plant production. We studied the production of indole 3-acetic acid (IAA)-like compounds in three psychrotolerant Patagonian native yeast strains. The yeast Tausonia pullulans CRUB 1772, Candida saitoana CRUB 1770 and Saccharomyces eubayanus CRUB 2014 were evaluated using the Salkowski's colorimetric technique and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). T. pullulans CRUB 1772 was the highest producer of IAA-like compounds using the colorime

Cancer immunotherapy has become a powerful clinical strategy for cancer management, while its efficacy is frequently limited by primary and acquired resistance. The tumor microenvironment (TME) plays a pivotal role in mediating such resistance through multifaceted mechanisms involving cellular, metabolic, mechanical, and microbial components. This review systematically examines how the TME contributes to immunotherapy failure. We compare resistance mechanisms common to both immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) and chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapies, two cornerstone modalities in

Spodoptera frugiperda, known as the fall armyworm (FAW), a major invasive pest in corn, is rapidly spreading all over the world. Similarly to other Lepidoptera insects, FAW pupae usually develop in soil. Therefore, the soil moisture level is expected to be an important factor impacting their growth. In order to study the development and emergence of FAW pupae in a 100% soil moisture environment, three factors were selected for experiments in this study: the duration of saturated (100%) moisture treatment (0 h, 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h), the initial soil moisture before the larvae entered the soil …
