Chemosensory Pathways Involved in the Perception of Tomato-Derived Flavonoids and Alkaloids in Meloidogyne incognita.

Plant-parasitic nematodes rely on the perception of host-derived chemical cues released from plant roots to locate suitable hosts, representing a critical prerequisite for successful plant infection. In this study, we selected four representative tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) root-derived chemical signals and demonstrated their distinct effects on the host-seeking behavior of the southern root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita). Among these compounds, the flavonoids quercetin and luteolin exhibited significant attractant effects, whereas the alkaloids dihydrocapsaicin and solasodine show…

Host plant preference of Lygus hesperus (Hemiptera: Miridae) in 4 field crops: potato, alfalfa, carrot, and pea.

The western tarnished plant bug, Lygus hesperus (Knight), has emerged as a pest of potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) in the Lower Columbia Basin of Oregon and Washington. This species is generally found infesting several other field-grown crops in the region; however, their host preference is poorly understood. Thus, greenhouse cage experiments were conducted to evaluate L. hesperus host preference by simultaneously presenting adults with 4 host plants: potato, alfalfa, Medicago sativa L., carrot, Daucus carota L., and pea, Pisum sativum L. In addition, an oviposition test was conducted. The res…

Computational investigation of phytochemicals identified from medicinal plant extracts against tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis (TB) is still one of the world's most challenging infectious diseases and the emergence of drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis poses a significant threat to the treatment of TB. Identifying new medications based on local traditional remedies has become more essential. Gas Chromatography-Mass spectrometry (GC-MS) (Perkin-Elmer, MA, USA) was used to identify potential bioactive components in Solanum surattense, Piper longum, and Alpinia galanga plants sections. The fruits and rhizomes' chemical compositions were analyzed using solvents like petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl a…

The phyB-dependent induction of HY5 promotes iron uptake by systemically activating FER expression.

Iron (Fe) deficiency affects global crop productivity and human health. However, the role of light signaling in plant Fe uptake remains uncharacterized. Here, we find that light-induced Fe uptake in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is largely dependent on phytochrome B (phyB). Light induces the phyB-dependent accumulation of ELONGATED HYPOCOTYL 5 (HY5) protein both in the leaves and roots. HY5 movement from shoots to roots activates the expression of FER transcription factor, leading to the accumulation of transcripts involved in Fe uptake. Mutation in FER abolishes the light quality-induced c…

Bt Brinjal in Bangladesh: The First Genetically Engineered Food Crop in a Developing Country.

Eggplant, or brinjal (Solanum melongena), is a popularly consumed vegetable grown throughout Asia that is prone to vicious and sustained attack by the eggplant fruit and shoot borer (EFSB) (Leucinodes orbonalis) throughout the growing season. Yield losses in Bangladesh because of EFSB infestation have been reported as high as 86%. Farmers reduce crop losses by frequent applications of insecticide. To counter the EFSB pest, Bangladesh has developed and released four Bt brinjal varieties expressing Cry1Ac (Bt brinjal). Bangladesh is the first developing country to release a commercial geneticall…

Modulation of abiotic stress tolerance by a grapevine cell culture-based biostimulant in tomato plants.

Tomato is the third most produced crop in the world, with Spain being the ninth largest producer worldwide. However, its production, as well as that of many other crop species, is being threatened by edaphoclimatic pressure resulting from climate change, especially rising temperatures and soil salinization. The use of plant biostimulants, especially those derived from higher plants (hPDBs), is gaining ground as an approach to improve crop performance and yield in plants growing in adverse conditions. In this research, a biostimulant derived from elicited grapevine cell cultures, grapevine bios

Far-Red Light Supplementation in Tomato Cultivation: A Quantitative Review of Morphological and Physiological Responses.

Far-red (FR) light at wavelengths 700-800 nm is abundant in sunlight but largely absent from artificial light sources. Standard Light-Emitting Diodes emit little to no FR light. Recently, research has focused on the effects of FR light on the growth and development of crops, like tomatoes. However, findings on FR effects on tomatoes vary, with some effects even depending on the geographic location. To unravel the variability of the results, this review identified all relevant studies that quantified the FR-induced responses in tomato growth, morphology, fruit development and photosynthetic par

Impact of varied oral processing on starch hydrolysis, bolus properties, and sensory texture attributes of mashed potatoes.

BACKGROUND: Oral processing behavior influences starch bioavailability, yet the impact of chewing conditions on starch digestibility remains unclear. This study investigated how varied chewing behaviors affect starch digestibility in a mashed potato (MP) sample. Three chewing conditions were compared until individual swallowing readiness: slow-rate (SR) chewing, squeezing (tongue-palate compression without teeth), and free chewing. RESULTS: Instrumental texture analysis showed pure MP was too soft for chewing; κ-carrageenan (κ-Car) addition increased hardness, enabling mastication in MP-Car.

Molecular characterization of a naturally occurring isolate of Begomovirus solanumkarnatakaense causing breakdown of Ty-3-mediated resistance in tomato plants with increased disease severity under elevated temperature.

BACKGROUND: Tomato leaf curl disease, caused by rapidly evolving begomoviruses, poses a major threat to tomato production worldwide. Although resistance genes like Ty-1/Ty-3 have effectively managed key viruses such as tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV), emerging new viral variants continuously challenge this control. RESULTS: In this study, we identified and characterized a resistance-breaking isolate of tomato leaf curl Karnataka virus (ToLCKV, MZ578458, species: Begomovirussolanumkarnatakaense) from symptomatic tomato genotypes carrying the Ty-gene(s). Agro-infectious construct of this …

Stomatal density and aperture dynamics regulate drought response and yield in tomato.

In crops, key physiological traits such as transpiration, stomatal conductance, and photosynthesis are closely linked to productivity. However, these dynamic traits are often studied under steady-state conditions or modeled with limited data, failing to capture the plant's versatile responses to dynamic field conditions. We hypothesized that natural variation in stomatal morphological traits, specifically, abaxial-to-adaxial distribution and density regulate the temporal physiological response patterns in tomato introgression lines (ILs; crosses between WT, S. Pennellii, and M82 lines). We fur

Self-layered fruit preservation coating based on chitosan and curcumin.

Long-term fruit storage requires preservatives to reduce spoilage and maintain freshness. For food safety, additives must adhere stably to fruit surfaces without penetrating the skin. This study developed a coating preservation solution (FS) with highly water-soluble aldehyde starch-curcumin-gelatin composite particles (ASCG) and chitosan, offering high adhesion and low permeability for maintaining the quality of fruits such as cherry tomatoes and apples during storage. The coating formed a 1 μm layer on waxy fruit skins, with ASCG creating a bottom antioxidant/antimicrobial layer and surface-

The rate of photosynthetic induction across different light intensities can be approximated using the light response curve of photosynthesis.

While natural light in plant canopies often fluctuates and shows a large range of possible intensities, the rate of photosynthetic induction is often measured at only two light intensities. This prompts the question as to how the relationship between different light intensities and the rate of photosynthetic induction can be characterized. Using hundreds of measurements of photosynthetic induction at various light intensities in leaves of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), we found linear relationships between the time to reach 50% of full photosynthetic induction (t50) and the difference between …

Integrating the tomato chlorosis virus with the tobacco rattle virus facilitates the direct infection of tomato.

Tomato chlorosis virus (ToCV) threatens tomato production, resulting in substantial yield losses. An efficient inoculation system for ToCV can accelerate the isolation and utilization of tomato-resistant genetic resources. However, infectious ToCV clones cannot directly infect tomato plants. In this study, we cloned the full-length ToCV genome, including RNA1 and RNA2 molecules, and integrated their corresponding DNA fragments separately into the less virulent tobacco rattle virus-based pTRV2GW vector. Agrobacterium suspensions carrying pTRV1, pTRV2GW-RNA1, and pTRV2GW-RNA2 plasmids were mixed

Harnessing OmpR for Enhanced Biocontrol: Characterization of a Novel Engineered Strain of Lysobacter gummosus with Increased Nematicidal Properties.

The development of green alternatives to chemical nematicides is an urgent need in sustainable agriculture. This study constructed an engineered strain, LG209, by overexpressing the transcriptional regulator OmpR, which significantly enhanced nematicidal activity against Meloidogyne incognita J2s and increased secondary metabolite production. From its fermentation broth, 20 compounds were isolated, including a new naphthoquinone derivative. Notably, phenylacetic acid (3), 2-(4-methoxyphenyl)acetic acid (5), and 9H-carbazole (18) exhibited strong nematicidal activity, with LC50 values of 52.34,

Influence of polystyrene nanoplastics on the uptake and distribution of potentially toxic elements in tomato plants investigated using isotopic tracers.

This study evaluated the impact of 200 nm polystyrene (PS) nanoplastics (NPs) on the uptake and distribution of potentially toxic elements (PTEs), including chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn), in hydroponically grown tomato plants. To distinguish naturally occurring PTEs from those taken up by the plants from nutrient solutions, enriched isotopic tracers were used, while europium (Eu)-labelled PS NPs enabled following the presence of NPs in plant tissues via ICP-MS analysis. After accounting for Eu leaching, intact PS-Eu NP concentrations were highest in roots and decreased

Exogenous spermidine (Spd) improves the tolerance to alkaline-salt stress in potato.

BACKGROUND: Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is the world's fourth most important staple crop, but its production is increasingly threatened by soil salinization, particularly alkaline-salt stress caused by excessive NaHCO3. Although exogenous spermidine (Spd) has been reported to alleviate abiotic stresses in various plants, its physiological and molecular mechanisms in conferring alkaline-salt tolerance in potato remain largely unknown. RESULTS: The results demonstrated that exogenous Spd enhances alkaline-salt tolerance in potato by increasing antioxidant enzyme activities and maintaining osm…

Effects of mixed-culture fermentation on bioactive compounds, antioxidant capacity, and flavor metabolomics of red sour soup.

Red sour soup is a fermented food made mainly from tomatoes, chili peppers, and glutinous rice. It is commonly used as a sour and salty seasoning in everyday cooking by the Miao and Dong people in southwestern China, where it helps adapt to the humid climate. However, the quality of traditional naturally fermented red sour soup can be inconsistent, which may lead to safety issues. This study aimed to understand how inoculated fermentation affects the physical and chemical properties, bioactive substances, and flavor of red sour soup. The results showed that when specific strains-Lactiplantibac

Galactinol synthase 4 influences plant height by affecting phenylpropanoid metabolism and the balance of soluble carbohydrates in tomato.

Plant height is a key trait that significantly influences plant architecture, disease resistance, adaptability to mechanical cultivation, and overall economic yield. Galactinol synthase (GolS) is a crucial enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of raffinose family oligosaccharides (RFOs). It plays a significant role in carbohydrate transport and storage, combating abiotic and biotic stresses, and regulating plant growth and development. The present study employed CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing technology to create the gols4 mutant in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), which exhibits a semi-dwarf phenotype.…

Iron accumulation in leaf trichomes and stomata of tomato as an iron reservoir provided by iron-citric acid chelate under limey soil conditions.

Iron (Fe) is an important mineral needed for plant growth and development. Calcareous (limey) soils cause decline in Fe availability leading to chlorosis in leaves. The correction of Fe chlorosis can be succeeded by the application organic acids. In the present study, we chelated Fe-citrate complex solution, compared with Fe-EDDHA fertilizer, and evaluated the effects of the Fe-citrate chelates on tomato under limey soil condition. The study was conducted in a controlled greenhouse. "Joker F1" cultivar tomato seedlings were used as the material. The seedlings were planted in the 4-L pots fille
