Relationships among cortical activation, cognition, and blood biomarkers in two types of dementia determined using functional near-infrared spectroscopy.

OBJECTIVE: The most prevalent types of dementia in older adults are Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Lewy body dementia (LBD), and they have overlapping clinical symptoms. We aimed to define amounts of cortical activation and to identify indicators of brain function to better distinguish between these types of dementia and aid diagnosis using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). METHODS: Oxygenated hemoglobin (HbO) concentrations in the brains of patients with AD and LBD were detected using fNIRS. Brain function was assessed using a verbal fluency task (VFT). Resting-state and task-stat

Differences in brain function entropy due to cognitive impairment: Application of functional near infrared spectroscopy measures during dual-tasking.

Screening guidelines for cognitive impairment are subjective and inconsistent, often leading to delayed diagnoses. An objective, simple method is needed. Dual-tasking, combined with brain function measurements, may provide sufficient cognitive cost to differentiate between healthy and cognitively impaired populations. It was hypothesized that low complexity (entropy) of brain activity is associated with cognitive impairment, and that dual-tasking would better differentiate between healthy and cognitively impaired groups over resting. Eighty-three participants were recruited: healthy young adul

Non-invasive assessment of muscle spasticity in children with cerebral palsy undergoing botulinum toxin treatment using near-infrared spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Spasticity is a common and debilitating feature of cerebral palsy (CP), often treated with botulinum toxin A (BoNT-A). Standard assessments, such as the Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS), are subjective and prone to inter-rater variability. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a non-invasive method that measures muscle oxygenation and hemodynamics. In CP, spastic muscles exhibit impaired perfusion and abnormal oxygen consumption due to sustained contraction and elevated intramuscular pressure. Prior studies suggest that reducing spastic overactivity improves local tissue oxygenation, i

Altered descending modulation in patients with chronic primary low back pain assessed by non-invasive functional near-infrared spectroscopy.

Objective. Low back pain (LBP) is a significant public health issue. Despite current medical imaging and neurophysiological tests, up to 90% of patients lack a clear cause, leading to a diagnosis of chronic primary LBP (CPLP). Non-invasive functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was employed to detect spinal cord dysfunctions by recording perispinal neurovascular response (NVR).Approach. In a prospective study of 71 CPLP patients and 65 healthy age-matched volunteers, pain maps, visual analog scale (VAS), body mass index (BMI), posterior tibial nerve conduction velocity (NCV), and lumbar

Respiratory and locomotor muscle blood flow measurements using near-infrared spectroscopy and indocyanine green dye in health and disease.

Measuring respiratory and locomotor muscle blood flow during exercise is pivotal for understanding the factors limiting exercise tolerance in health and disease. Traditional methods to measure muscle blood flow present limitations for exercise testing. This article reviews a method utilising near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in combination with the light-absorbing tracer indocyanine green dye (ICG) to simultaneously assess respiratory and locomotor muscle blood flow during exercise in health and disease. NIRS provides high spatiotemporal resolution and can detect chromophore concentrations. In

Altered resting-state functional connectivity in newborns with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy assessed using high-density functional near-infrared spectroscopy.

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) results from a lack of oxygen to the brain during the perinatal period. HIE can lead to mortality and various acute and long-term morbidities. Improved bedside monitoring methods are needed to identify biomarkers of brain health. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) can assess resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) at the bedside. We acquired resting-state fNIRS data from 21 neonates with HIE (postmenstrual age [PMA] = 39.96), in 19 neonates the scans were acquired post-therapeutic hypothermia (TH), and from 20 term-born healthy newborns (PM

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Monitoring to Detect Changes in Cerebral and Renal Perfusion During Hypovolemic Shock, Volume Resuscitation, and Vasoconstriction.

INTRODUCTION: Rapidly changing hemodynamic conditions, such as uncontrolled hemorrhage and the resulting hypovolemic shock, are a common contributor to active duty military deaths. These conditions can cause cerebral desaturation, and outcomes may improve when regional cerebral oxygen saturation (CrSO2) is monitored using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and desaturation episodes are recognized and reversed. The purpose of this porcine study was to investigate the ability of NIRS monitoring to detect changes in regional cerebral and regional renal perfusion during hypovolemia, resuscitation b

Functional brain connectivity after corrective cardiac surgery for critical congenital heart disease: a preliminary near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) report.

Patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) requiring cardiac surgery in infancy are at high risk for neurodevelopmental impairments. Neonatal imaging studies have reported disruptions of brain functional organization before surgery. Yet, the extent to which functional network alterations are present after cardiac repair remains unexplored. This preliminary study aimed at investigating cortical functional connectivity in 4-month-old infants with repaired CHD, using resting-state functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). After fNIRS signal frequency decomposition, we compared values of ma

Comparison of Whole-Head Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy With Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Potential Application in Pediatric Neurology.

BACKGROUND: Changes in cerebral blood flow in response to neuronal activation can be measured by time-dependent fluctuations in hemoglobin species within the brain; this is the basis of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). There is a clinical need for portable neural imaging systems, such as fNIRS, to accommodate patients who are unable to tolerate an MR environment. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to compare task-related full-head fNIRS and fMRI signals across cortical regions. METHODS: Eighteen healthy adults completed a same-day fNIR

Reduced parietal activation in participants with mild cognitive impairments during visual-spatial processing measured with functional near-infrared spectroscopy.

Functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) may be a suitable, simple, and cost-effective brain imaging technique for detecting divergent neuronal patterns at an early stage of neurodegeneration. In course of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) or Alzheimer's disease (AD), a deficit in visual-spatial processing, located in the parietal cortex, is a reliable risk factor. Earlier, we established the application of the clock-hand-angle-discrimination task (ADT) during fNIRS to identify neuronal correlates of the visual-spatial processing in a healthy elderly sample. In this analysis, we aimed to me

Clinical significance of assessing cerebral blood volume by time-domain near-infrared spectroscopy in children with congenital heart disease.

BACKGROUND: Despite providing cerebral tissue oxygen saturation (StO2 ), the lack of quantitative information for continuous wave near-infrared spectroscopy (CW-NIRS) is an obstacle in evaluating cerebral hemodynamic conditions. Time-domain NIRS (TD-NIRS) provides both StO2 and cerebral blood volume and has recently become clinically available. AIM: To investigate if the additional monitoring of cerebral blood volume by TD-NIRS facilitates the understanding of cerebral hemodynamic conditions in patients with congenital heart disease. METHODS: Preoperative TD-NIRS values were retrospectively

Differentiating between bipolar and unipolar depression using prefrontal activation patterns: Promising results from functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) findings.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar depression (BD) is a unique, severe and prevalent mental illness that shares many similarities in symptoms with unipolar depression (UD). Improving precision of their diagnoses would enhance treatment outcome and prognosis for both conditions. This study aims to provide evidence from functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) as a potential tool to differentiate UD and BD based on their differences in hemodynamic change in the prefrontal cortex during verbal fluency tasks (VFT). METHODS: We enrolled 179 participants with clinically confirmed diagnoses, including 69 UD p

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy detects increased activation of the brain frontal-parietal network in youth with type 1 diabetes.

When considered as a group, children with type 1 diabetes have subtle cognitive deficits relative to neurotypical controls. However, the neural correlates of these differences remain poorly understood. Using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), we investigated the brain functional activations of young adolescents (19 individuals with type 1 diabetes, 18 healthy controls, ages 8-16 years) during a Go/No-Go response inhibition task. Both cohorts had the same performance on the task, but the individuals with type 1 diabetes subjects had higher activations in a frontal-parietal network i

Non-Invasive Analysis of Actinic Keratosis before and after Topical Treatment Using a Cold Stimulation and Near-Infrared Spectroscopy.

Background and objectives: The possible evolution of actinic keratoses (AKs) into invasive squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) makes their treatment and monitoring essential. AKs are typically monitored before and after treatment only through a visual analysis, lacking a quantitative measure to determine treatment effectiveness. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a non-invasive measure of the relative change of oxy-hemoglobin and deoxy-hemoglobin (O2Hb and HHb) in tissues. The aim of our study is to determine if a time and frequency analysis of the NIRS signals acquired from the skin lesion befor

Cortical activity during social acceptance and rejection task in social anxiety disorder: A controlled functional near infrared spectroscopy study.

BACKGROUND: The cognitive and emotional vulnerability of individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) and their response to repeated experiences of social rejection and social acceptance are important factors for the emergence and maintenance of symptoms of the disorder. Functional neuroimaging studies of SAD reveal hyperactivity in regions involved in the fear circuit such as amygdala, insula, anterior cingulate, and prefrontal cortices (PFC) in response to human faces with negative emotions. Observation of brain activity, however, involving studies of responses to standardized human intera

Reduced Gait Variability and Enhanced Brain Activity in Older Adults With Auditory Cues: A Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Study.

BACKGROUND: Aging is associated with declining mobility, which negatively affects quality of life and incurs substantial economic costs. Techniques to maintain safe mobility in older adults are therefore essential. Rhythmic auditory cueing (RAC) can improve walking patterns in older adults. However, the neural correlates associated with RAC, how they are influenced by repeated exposure and their relationships with gait response, cognitive function, and depressive symptoms are unclear. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the effects of RAC during walking on cortical activation and the
