Augmentative and Alternative Communication Course Design and Features: A Survey of Expert Faculty and Instructors.

PURPOSE: Multiple surveys have been used to investigate augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) coursework offered in speech-language pathology programs in the last 3 decades. These studies primarily explored the availability of AAC courses and reported a limited number of course characteristics. Because few studies to date have specifically examined the AAC course design, the purpose of this study was to investigate the design and features of AAC coursework, such as learning objectives, course content, assignments, and readings and resources, currently taught in the United States. The human right to communicate and our need to listen: Learning from people with a history of childhood communication disorder.

PURPOSE: In 2013, the Australian Government Senate formed a committee for inquiry and report into the prevalence of speech, language, and communication disorders and speech pathology services in Australia. Submissions were sought from individuals and organisations. In this paper, submissions made by individuals with a history of childhood communication disorder were examined to explore their life experiences and the impact on their lives when the right to communicate could not be enacted. METHOD: There were 305 submissions to the Australian Government Senate Committee Inquiry, of which 288 we

Traditional and phonological treatment for teaching English fricatives and affricates to Koreans.

Non-native speakers of English are being seen for accent reduction in speech-language pathology clinics although there is little evidence that treatment is effective. Two types of treatment were evaluated. Traditional articulation-based treatment was successful for 2 native Korean speakers in improving English fricatives and affricate production. A second treatment using phonologically based contrasts was also successful for the same sounds with 2 other Korean speakers. Some issues in foreign accent reduction are discussed.

Identification of High-Frequency Morphosyntactic Structures in Persian-Speaking Children Aged 4-6 Years: A Qualitative Research.

BACKGROUND: Syntax has a high importance among linguistic parameters and the prevalence of syntax deficits is relatively high in children with language disorders. As such, independent examination of syntax in language development is of paramount importance. In this regard, Iranian language pathologists are faced with the lack of standardized tests. The present study aimed to determine the most frequent and essential morphosyntactic structures of the Persian-speaking children aged 4-6 years, as an initial step in the design of a test to assess their expressive morphosyntactic features. METHODS

Identifying Barriers and Facilitators to Telepractice in Children Younger Than 12 Years for Speech and Language Therapists and Audiologists in Belgium: A Nominal Group Technique Study.

PURPOSE: The use of telepractice in speech therapy or audiology has long been limited to situations in which a person could not access a specialized clinician. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, however, many speech therapists and audiologists were forced to use it even though they were not accustomed to doing so. A guideline for the use of telepractice in speech therapy and audiology for children up to the age of 12 years in Belgium has recently been established (Van Eerdenbrugh et al., 2023). To develop the guideline, it was essential to gain an understanding of the barriers and facilitators t

South African undergraduate students' perceptions of clinical supervision in speech-language therapy.

BACKGROUND: Clinical training is a cornerstone of speech-language therapy education, bridging theory with practice. Effective clinical supervision is critical for developing students' competence, confidence and professional identity. However, there is limited research on students' perceptions of clinical supervision in resource-constrained settings, such as South Africa. OBJECTIVES: This study explored student speech-language therapists' perspectives on clinical supervision during placements, identifying both facilitators and barriers to practical learning, with the aim of informing improveme

Lingual frenulum protocol.

An efficient lingual frenulum protocol with scores is presented. From a specific lingual frenulum evaluation used until 2004, a new protocol was designed. Ten speech language pathologists experienced in orofacial myology used the new protocol with different groups of subjects. 1235 subjects were evaluated during 3 years. From the experience of these ten speech language pathologists, the protocol was re-structured, and a scoring system was added. Absence of alteration (normal tongue and frenulum) was scored zero. The alterations observed were scored in ascending order. Four additional speech la

Use of a consensus building approach to plan speech services for children with cleft palate in India.

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is a common birth defect worldwide. While surgical repair can normalize appearance, debilitating speech disorders frequently persist. Speech-language pathology (SLP) services are needed to address these disorders. However in many regions of the world, there is no discipline of SLP or inadequate numbers of trained clinicians. New models for service delivery must be explored to address the needs of children with CLP. Community-based rehabilitation (CBR) programs represent one model that has been successful in the delivery of other rehabilitation services. This paper pr…

Service Delivery Schedule Effects on Speech Sound Production Outcomes.

Purpose Children with speech sound disorders feature prominently on the caseloads of speech-language pathologists working in schools, with many receiving services once or twice weekly for 20-30 min. This study compared the outcomes of services provided twice weekly for 30 min to those provided 4 times weekly for 15 min to examine their effectiveness in remediating speech sound disorders in an elementary school setting. Method A total of 35 students were recruited from an existing public school caseload for participation. Participants were randomly assigned to receive school-based speech therap

Coming to Terms with a Conundrum: A Case of Primary Progressive Apraxia of Speech due to Corticobasal Degeneration?

Primary progressive apraxia of speech (PPAOS) is a progressive disorder impairing the motor speech act leaving linguistic function unattained. Although apraxia of speech frequently co-occurs with other neurodegenerative conditions, PPAOS defines a clinical syndrome where apraxia of speech is the sole or prominent symptom for much of the disease's natural history. Mounting evidence is beginning to fully define this disease as the epiphenomenon of 4-repeat (4R) tau pathology although other pathologic signatures have been reported. Indeed, PPAOS patients generally present a parkinsonian syndrome

Prominent auditory deficits in primary progressive aphasia: A case study.

Aphasia typically is associated with comparable difficulties in written and spoken modalities of language expression and comprehension. In contrast, auditory verbal agnosia is the disproportionate difficulty comprehending spoken compared to written language, also typically greater than difficulties with spoken and written language expression, in the absence of a primary sensory deficit. The terms pure word deafness and auditory verbal agnosia are often used synonymously. However, the broader term of auditory agnosia more accurately reflects difficulty processing both speech and non-speech soun

In vivo signatures of nonfluent/agrammatic primary progressive aphasia caused by FTLD pathology.

OBJECTIVE: To identify early cognitive and neuroimaging features of sporadic nonfluent/agrammatic variant of primary progressive aphasia (nfvPPA) caused by frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) subtypes. METHODS: We prospectively collected clinical, neuroimaging, and neuropathologic data in 11 patients with sporadic nfvPPA with FTLD-tau (nfvPPA-tau, n = 9) or FTLD-transactive response DNA binding protein pathology of 43 kD type A (nfvPPA-TDP, n = 2). We analyzed patterns of cognitive and gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) atrophy at presentation in the whole group and in each pathologi

The frequency modulated auditory evoked response (FMAER), a technical advance for study of childhood language disorders: cortical source localization and selected case studies.

BACKGROUND: Language comprehension requires decoding of complex, rapidly changing speech streams. Detecting changes of frequency modulation (FM) within speech is hypothesized as essential for accurate phoneme detection, and thus, for spoken word comprehension. Despite past demonstration of FM auditory evoked response (FMAER) utility in language disorder investigations, it is seldom utilized clinically. This report's purpose is to facilitate clinical use by explaining analytic pitfalls, demonstrating sites of cortical origin, and illustrating potential utility. RESULTS: FMAERs collected from c

Speech representation in an unbiased sample of left-handers.

The incidence of left-handedness in a consecutive series of 520 patients selected only for unilateral damage (the majority were strokes), was found to be within normal limits. Left-handers in this sample did not have a higher incidence of aphasia or apraxia than right-handers, although aphasia and apraxia tended to be less severe in left-handers. Statistical evaluation of most previous studies claiming higher frequencies of aphasia in left-handers did not substantiate those claims, except in severely disruptive pathologies. Previous studies employing the sodium Amytal test indicate bilateral s

Sample size calculations for clinical trials targeting tauopathies: a new potential disease target.

Disease-modifying therapies are being developed to target tau pathology, and should, therefore, be tested in primary tauopathies. We propose that progressive apraxia of speech should be considered one such target group. In this study, we investigate potential neuroimaging and clinical outcome measures for progressive apraxia of speech and determine sample size estimates for clinical trials. We prospectively recruited 24 patients with progressive apraxia of speech who underwent two serial MRI with an interval of approximately 2 years. Detailed speech and language assessments included the Apraxi
