Sporotrichosis is a mycotic disease caused by cutaneous inoculation of the dimorphic fungus Sporothrix schenckii. The primary lesion can spread and often develop a unilateral lymphocutaneous lesions or, rarely, disseminated disease. We report a lymphangitic sporotrichosis case with ulcerated erythematous nodules distributed bilaterally on the posterior and medical aspect of the both legs, probably due to multiple inoculations. The treatment with oral potassium iodide was satisfactory.

Sporotrichosis is an infection of worldwide distribution caused by the dimorphic fungus, Sporothrix schenckii. Acquisition typically occurs via cutaneous inoculation with development of a localized cutaneous and/or lymphocutaneous infection. We present a rare case of osteoarticular sporotrichosis in a 39-year-old man and review the literature noting only 20 published cases since 1980. Recommendations on the diagnosis and management of this unusual infection are provided.

Sporotrichosis is rare in Turkey. We report a 40-year-old woman who had subcutaneous sporotrichosis caused by sporothrix schenckii that was successfully treated with terbinafine (250 mg, twice a day) for a period of 6 months. She received a saturated solution of potassium iodide orally for two months. Terbinafine and potassium iodide are suggested to be the agents of choice for treatment of subcutaneous sporotrichosis.

We report the case of a 51-year-old man who presented with a six-month history of a slowly growing plaque on the right ring finger and nodules over the right arm. Cultures grew Sporothrix schenckii. He was treated with itraconazole, 100 mg daily, with complete resolution of the lesions after five months of therapy. The differential diagnoses and the various modalities of treatment are emphasized.

The Transvaal was once known as an area with a high incidence of sporotrichosis in workers on the goldmines. The nature of the infection was not understood before the disease was first clinically identified 60 years ago by the pathologist, Dr B. D. Pullinger. Working with Dr A. Pijper in Pretoria, she demonstrated the presence of a pathogenic Sporothrix fungus. Now in retirement, Dr Pullinger has told how this discovery was made.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In contrast to superficial fungal infections, such as dermatophytosis, invasive fungal infections (IFIs) are characteris … c or hyperendemic within specific geographic regions. Zoonotic pathogens include Microsporum canis, Sporothrix schenckii and Sporothrix brasiliensis.
AIM: In the first of a two-part article series, the approach to the investigation of feline IFIs and oomycoses is reviewed. As well as tips for diagnosis, and information on the ecological niche and distributi …

INTRODUCTION: Sporotrichosis is an endemic fungal infection in Brazil, caused by a dimorphic fungus of the genus Sporothrix. Transmission occurs through traumatic inoculation from soil, contaminated plants, and zoonotic sources, mainly from cats, as well as through inhalation of conidia. It commonly presents as localized, lymphocutaneous, disseminated, or systemic forms. The testicles are among the organs that can be affected, often manifesting as a testicular mass. This work is aimed at analyzing a clinical case along with a bibliographic review on the testicular involvement of sporotrichosis…

Sporotrichosis is a worldwide zoonosis, prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions. In recent years, there has been a substantial increase in human and feline cases reported in Brazil. Despite this, the antifungal treatment for sporotrichosis is still limited, and thus, research into new therapeutic modalities must be encouraged. Recently, photodynamic therapy has been introduced as a treatment for sporotrichosis. This work presents an overview of both in vitro and in vivo studies that have used photodynamic therapy in the context of photoinactivation of Sporothrix species. Until now, as fa…

BACKGROUND: The gold standard for the sporotrichosis diagnosis is culture; however, serologic approaches have been recently implemented to aid in the sporotrichosis diagnosis. Nevertheless, the clinical consequences of the introduction of serologic tests are poorly addressed.
AIMS: To correlate the results of culture and serology of patients with suspected sporotrichosis.
METHODS: A retrospective study of 198 patients with suspected sporotrichosis was conducted. Information about culture isolation of Sporothrix from clinical samples and antibody detection by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent as…

BACKGROUND: Conjunctival sporotrichosis is a rare fungal infection, typically presenting as granulomatous lesions. Its manifestations can be … sted fungal infection with squamous epithelial hyperplasia. Microbiological testing (DNA) confirmed Sporothrix schenckii as the pathogen. The conjunctival mass resolved without recurrence after local and systemic anti-fungal medicine treatment. Despite the progression of Mooren's ulcers, which further dissolved and perforated during treatment, aggressive man …

Sporotrichosis is a subacute or chronic mycosis caused by a fungus of the genus Sporothrix, which is found in soil. It can be acquired by trauma to the skin. Bone and joint lesions are very rare. The city of Rio de Janeiro is undergoing an epidemic transmitted by cats, and this should be an alert for the risk to professionals in contact with these animals. The patient was a veterinarian who developed occupational sporotrichosis with osteoarticular involvement transmitted by a cat during a consultation.

Sporothrix schenckii is a fungus that can be found worldwide in decaying vegetative matter. It is the causative agent of sporotrichosis, a chronic infection of humans and animals. The infection is characterized by nodular lesions of the cutaneous and subcutaneous tissues with lymphatic involvement. Systemic spread may occur with bone, muscle, central nervous system, and pulmonary involvement. Diagnosis may be made based on clinical presentation and on laboratory identification of the etiologic agent.

This report describes a 29-year-old man with AIDS and disseminated lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis diagnosis presenting a poor therapeutic adhesion to itraconazole therapy that later evolved to neurological impairment and death. Necropsy showed granulomatous reaction and yeast-like forms similar to Sporothrix schenckii in meninges, lymph nodes, marrow bone, skin, testicles, epididymides and pancreas. Meningeal sporotrichosis cases associated to AIDS are reviewed in brief.

The fixed cutaneous type of sporotrichosis is difficult to diagnose because clinical lesions are variable in appearance and the cells of Sporothrix schenckii are usually scarce in skin biopsy specimens. We have described two patients with lesions of fixed cutaneous sporotrichosis that resembled other inflammatory skin conditions and were treated with intralesional corticosteroids. Subsequent skin biopsies from these lesions demonstrated an unusually large number of yeast cells.
