The derivation of pluripotent stem cells from somatic tissues has provided researchers with a source of patient-specific stem cells. The potential applications of this technology are truly momentous, and include cellular modeling of disease processes, drug discovery, and cell-based therapy. Here, we review the use of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to study CNS disease. Since the iPSC field is still in its infancy, we also discuss some of the challenges that will need to be overcome before the potential of this technology to study and to treat neurological and psychiatric disorders can

Motor neuron diseases, as the vast majority of neurodegenerative disorders in humans, are incurable conditions that are challenging to study in vitro, owing to the obstacles in obtaining the cell types majorly involved in the pathogenesis. Recent advances in stem cell research, especially in the development of induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technology, have opened up the possibility of generating a substantial amount of disease-specific neuronal cells, including motor neurons and glial cells. The present review analyzes the practical implications of iPSCs, generated from fibroblasts of p…

Spinal cord injury has long been a prominent challenge in the trauma repair process. Spinal cord injury is a research hotspot by virtue of its difficulty to treat and its escalating morbidity. Furthermore, spinal cord injury has a long period of disease progression and leads to complications that exert a lot of mental and economic pressure on patients. There are currently a large number of therapeutic strategies for treating spinal cord injury, which range from pharmacological and surgical methods to cell therapy and rehabilitation training. All of these strategies have positive effects in the

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by cognitive decline, memory loss, and a gradual loss of daily functioning. Unfortunately, despite extensive research, effective treatments for AD remain limited. Of these, stem cell-based therapies show promise for their regenerative potential and ability to modulate pathological processes. Autologous blood-derived stem cells (ABSCs), which are isolated from a patient's own blood, have demonstrated therapeutic efficacy in AD. This clinical study evaluated the safety and efficacy of ABSCs on patients with AD and investigated the changing levels of grow

Stem cell therapy is a promising treatment option for neurodegenerative diseases that mostly affect geriatric patients who often suffer from comorbidities requiring multiple medications. However, not much is known about the interactions between stem cells and drugs. Here, we focus on the potential interactions between drugs used to treat the comorbidities or sequelae of neurodegenerative diseases and neuronal stem cells to reveal potential effects on drug safety and efficacy. To determine the potential effects of drugs frequently used in geriatric patients (analgesic, antibiotic, antidepressan

Recent reports of retinal stem cells being present in several locations of the adult eye have sparked great hopes that they may be used to treat the millions of people worldwide who suffer from blindness as a result of retinal disease or injury. A population of proliferative cells derived from the ciliary body epithelium (CE) has been considered one of the prime stem cell candidates, and as such they have received much attention in recent years. However, the true nature of these cells in the adult human eye has still not been fully elucidated, and the stem cell claim has become increasingly co

The identification of a subpopulation of brain tumor cells with potent tumorigenic capacity strengthens the cancer stem cell hypothesis of the origin of the tumors that has recently attracted the attention of many researchers. Reports have been published on the identification of tumor cells with stem cells characteristics in different types of tumors (acute myelogenic leukemia, breast cancer, prostate cancer, bone sarcomas, liver cancer, and melanomas). We and other groups have previously reported the isolation of cancer stem cells from adult glioblastoma multiforme. These cells express stem c

Neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is an important cause of neonatal death and disability. At present, there is no unified standard and specialized treatment method for neonatal HIE. In clinical practice, we have found that a gap remains between preclinical medical research and clinical application in the treatment of neonatal HIE. To promote an organic combination of preclinical research and clinical application, we propose the different phases as intervention targets, based on the pathophysiologic changes in phases I, II, and III of neonatal HIE; moreover, we suggest transformati

An increasing number of women experience intrauterine adhesion as a result of intrauterine operations, such as induced abortion, which can cause infertility, recurrent abortion and amenorrhea. Although some strategies have been applied clinically, such as hysteroscopy adhesiolysis of intrauterine adhesions, the results have not been promising. As regenerative medicine develops, research on menstrual blood-derived stem cell transplantation is increasing due to the properties of these cells, including self-renewal, differentiation, angiogenesis, anti-inflammation and immunomodulation. INTRODUCTION: Dental stem cells have gained importance recently and are being used for various purposes in regenerative medicine and dentistry. Although much research has been done to show the various properties of these dental stem cells, the immunomodulatory properties of some of these stem cells are still unknown. This is important considering these cells are being used routinely. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the interactions between the activated immune cells and 3 types of dental-derived mesenchymal stem cells: dental pulp stem cells, stem cells from human exfoliate

Stem cell-based therapies offer promising treatment for spinal cord injury (SCI) by reducing inflammation, restoring plasticity, and supporting neuroprotection and nerve regeneration. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is crucial in SCI pathophysiology. This study reviews the impact of stem cells on BDNF expression in preclinical SCI models. A thorough search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science until June 2023, identifying studies on the effects of stem cells on BDNF in SCI. Two researchers reviewed and extracted data from relevant studies. This review is registered in th

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome is a type of congenital heart disease characterized by underdevelopment of the left ventricle, outflow tract, and aorta. The condition is fatal if aggressive palliative operations are not undertaken, but even after the complete 3-staged surgical palliation, there is significant morbidity because of progressive and ultimately intractable right ventricular failure. For this reason, there is interest in developing novel therapies for the management of right ventricular dysfunction in patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Stem cell therapy may represent one

Dogs represent a promising animal model for analyzing human neurodegenerative diseases, owing to their similarities to humans in nervous system architecture and behavioral phenotypes. Neural stem cells (NSCs) serve as a highly valuable in vitro experimental model for investigating neurogenesis, neurodegenerative disease pathogenesis, and neural molecular biology; however, studies on immortalized canine neural stem cell lines remain scarce. Herein, we successfully established an immortalized canine hippocampal neural stem cell line that can be continuously passaged in vitro via SV40 large T ant

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Bone regeneration and fracture repair are the complex processes of mesenchymal stem cell invasion, chondrogenesis, osteogenesis and angiogenesis. The coordinated actions of these principal processes result in the reconstruction of a normal bone and restoration of a structural unit. However, these normal bone regenerative mechanisms breakdown during fracture repair failure and postmenopausal osteoporosis.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent discoveries of circulating multipotent stem cells with mixed characteristics of endothelial cell and osteogenic capacity have raised interest in new

The pituitary is the master endocrine gland regulating key physiological processes, including body growth, metabolism, sexual maturation, reproduction, and stress response. More than a decade ago, stem cells were identified in the pituitary gland. However, despite the application of transgenic in vivo approaches, their phenotype, biology, and role remain unclear. To tackle this enigma, a new and innovative organoid in vitro model is developed to deeply unravel pituitary stem cell biology. Organoids represent 3D cell structures that, under defined culture conditions, self-develop from a tissue'

With the rapid development of gene editing technology, the study of spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) holds great significance in understanding spermatogenesis and its regulatory mechanism, developing transgenic animals, gene therapy, infertility treatment and protecting rare species. Biogenesis of lysosome-related organelles complex 1 subunit 1 (BLOC1S1) is believed to have anti-brucella potential. Exploring the impack of BLOC1S1 on goat SSCs not only helps investigate the ability of BLOC1S1 to promote SSCs proliferation, but also provides a cytological basis for disease-resistant breeding res

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Various chemical drugs have been approved for the treatment of patients with hepatitis C, but most of these treatments are costly, and also have an inadequate response and many side effects. Also, there is no effective vaccine for hepatitis C due to its high genetic diversity. In recent decades, clinical trials have grown dramatically regarding the benefits of stem cell therapy as a modulator of immune system responses and anti-inflammatory drugs. The most promising point in stem cell therapy and similar therapies is that patients with chronic pain and severe injuries are o
