Case Report: Group B Streptococcus meningitis in an adolescent  .

Streptococcus agalactiae (group B Streptococcus, GBS) usually colonizes the gastrointestinal and lower genital tracts of asymptomatic hosts, yet the incidence of invasive disease is on the rise . We describe a case of an 18 year old woman, recently diagnosed with lupus, who reported a spontaneous abortion six weeks prior to her hospitalization.  She presented with fever, altered mental status, and meningeal signs, paired with a positive blood culture for GBS. Magnetic resonance imaging of her brain demonstrated an extra-axial fluid collection, and she was diagnosed with meningitis.  She receiv…

Designing and evaluating a novel blood-brain barrier in vitro model of teleost for reproducing alterations in brain infecting.

A new blood-brain barrier (BBB) in vitro model of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) was successfully established by co-culture with brain microvascular endothelial cell line TVEC-01 and brain astrocyte cell line TA-02 of tilapia. Experiments with the expression levels of BBB-related genes, TEER value detection and 4-h water-leaking test have shown that the BBB in vitro model has an excellent barrier effect. In bacterial penetration experiments, the pathogenic strain of Streptococcus agalactiae was able to pass through the BBB in vitro model and initiate a series of immune responses, among which …

Every Country, Every Family: Time to Act for Group B Streptococcal Disease Worldwide.

The global burden of Group B Streptococcus (GBS) was estimated for 2015 prompting inclusion of GBS as a priority in the Global Meningitis Roadmap. New estimates for the year 2020 and a WHO report analysing the full value of GBS maternal vaccines has been launched to advance evidence based decision making for multiple stakeholders. In this first of a 10-article supplement, we discuss the following (1) gaps in evidence and action, (2) new evidence in this supplement, and (3) what actions can be taken now and key research gaps ahead. We call for investment in the research pipeline, notably descri

Acquired Gerbode Defect in a Patient With Infective Endocarditis of Bicuspid Aortic Valve.

Aortic valve abscess is a fatal complication of infective endocarditis. Transthoracic echocardiography is the initial imaging obtained in suspected infective endocarditis. However, its accuracy in detecting cardiac complications remains low, thus should be followed by transesophageal echocardiography if the clinical situation permits. Here, we present a case of a bicuspid aortic valve infective endocarditis caused by Streptococcus agalactiae and complicated with aortic valve abscess and acquired Gerbode defect, which appeared as a tricuspid valve vegetation on transthoracic echocardiography.

Group B streptococcus meningitis complicated by periodic lateralising epileptiform discharges in an elderly patient with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Streptococcus agalactiae (group B streptococcus or GBS) is the most common cause of bacterial meningitis in infants, but is rarely the cause in adults. Across all non-pregnant adults it comprises 7% of bacterial meningitis cases, with a mortality rate of 56% in the elderly. Therefore, while rare, GBS should be a part of a patient's differential when initiating antibiotics in adults with chronic illnesses. We report a 78-year-old diabetic female admitted to the hospital with suspected meningitis. Lumbar puncture revealed grossly purulent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and she was started on antibiot…

[Epidemiology of bacterial meningitis in France in 1999].

In France, two sources of data, the mandatory notification and the laboratory network EPIBAC, allow the health authorities to follow the incidence of bacterial meningitis (BM) and to assess the relative frequency of the micro-organisms responsible for such infection. In 1999, more than 1,000 cases of BM were notified in France. The more common micro-organisms were: Streptococcus pneumoniae 46%, Neisseria meningitidis 32% and Streptococcus agalactiae(or Streptococcus B) 11%. Listeria monocytogenes and Haemophilus influenzae accounted for 6% and 5% of the cases respectively. In 1999, the inciden…

Vaccination against group B streptococcus.

Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B streptococcus) is an important cause of disease in infants, pregnant women, the elderly and in immunosuppressed adults. An effective vaccine is likely to prevent the majority of infant disease (both early and late onset), as well as Group B streptococcus-related stillbirths and prematurity, to avoid the current real and theoretical limitations of intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis, and to be cost effective. The optimal time to administer such a vaccine would be in the third trimester of pregnancy. The main limitations on the production of a Group B streptococc…

Subtractive genomics approach to identify putative drug targets and identification of drug-like molecules for beta subunit of DNA polymerase III in Streptococcus species.

The prolonged use of the antibiotics over the years has transformed many organisms resistant to multiple drugs. This has made the field of drug discovery of vital importance in curing various infections and diseases. The drugs act by binding to a specific target protein of prime importance for the cell's survival. Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Streptococcus pyogenes are the few gram positive organisms that have developed resistance to drugs. It causes pneumonia, meningitis, pharyngitis, otitis media, sinusitis, bacteremia, pericarditis, and arthritis infections. The p…

Susceptibility of streptococci to newer tetracyclines and cephalosporins and to other antimicrobial agents.

Two hundred and thirty-nine strains of Streptococcus including 71 strains of Group A, 81 strains of Group B, 69 strains of enterococci, and 18 strains of S. pneumoniae were tested against 12 antimicrobial agents using an agar dilution method. Cefamandole was the most active cephalosporin tested. Doxycycline and minocycline were more active than tetracycline, although the tetracyclines were considerably less inhibitory than the cephalosporins. Regression line analysis of zones of inhibition versus minimal inhibitory concentration values for tetracycline and minocycline showed the tetracycline d
