We have analyzed rabbit cerebrospinal fluid for neuropeptide Y (NPY)-like immunoreactivity, using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and radioimmunoassay (RIA) and examined the anatomical relationship of NPY-containing fibers to the cerebral vasculature and the third cerebral ventricle. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) obtained from the cisterna magna of rabbits was injected into a C18 column and subjected to HPLC. The fractions were collected, dried and reconstituted in buffer for NPY radioimmunoassay. A single peak of NPY immunoreactivity was obtained which corresponded in retention time

Two cases of intradural rupture of lumbar intervertebral disks are described, in addition to 22 cases reported in the literature. Our case occurred among 753 herniated disks surgically treated in this department, an incidence similar to that in the literature. Clinically most cases presented as an acute cauda equina syndrome, and a myelographic block was almost always present. Prognosis is not made worse by the perforation. Various factors that might contribute to this relatively rate complication of disk disease are mentioned.

At diagnosis of the cerebral and spinal tuberculous meningitis magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is the primary imaging technique. Magnetic resonance images reveal cerebrospinal fluid collection and obliteration of the spinal subarachnoid space. The contrast-enhanced MR imaging shows nodular and thick intradural enhancement. Herein, the authors reported advanced MR imaging findings of the cerebral and spinal tuberculous leptomeningitis.

Cerebrospinal fluid leaks pose a serious threat to patients as they represent an unchecked communication between the subarachnoid space and the extracranial environment. Accurate localization of the leakage site is essential for treatment planning. Meningeal carcinomatosis as presenting symptom is rare. We report a patient who presented with an isolated abducens nerve palsy and an unsteady gait. At autopsy the primary tumor proved to be a gallbladder carcinoma. Only one similar case has been reported. Several aspects are discussed, including the route by which the tumor cells could have reached the subarachnoid space.

The authors report two cases of intracranial, extradural, intracavernous epidermoid cyst. In one case the cyst was ruptured into the subarachnoid space and in the substance of the temporal lobe. The two cysts had to be subtotally resected because of dense adherences with the internal carotid artery. In both cases the post-operative periods were uneventful.

Myelography with gas or iophendylate is difficult in patients with spinal anomalies. Metrizamide (Amipaque) has been used to evaluate 20 patients with Chiari malformations, achondroplasia, and conditions related to scoliosis. Lateral cervical puncture was uncomplicated in 10 patients with Chiari malformations. Definition of spinal subarachnoid space was adequate to demonstrate or exclude associated intraspinal tumors or diastematomyelia.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a new quantitative index for the diagnosis of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus.
METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted at İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty between January 2016 and November 2022. A total of 31 patients diagnosed with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus were included in the study group and 48 patients were included in the control group. Measurement via the new Index was performed on a coronal section of magnetic resonance imaging at the level of the anterior commissure.
