Effect of enzyme supplementation at moderate cellulase loadings on initial glucose and xylose release from corn stover solids pretreated by leading technologies.

Moderate loadings of cellulase enzyme supplemented with beta-glucosidase were applied to solids produced by ammonia fiber expansion (AFEX), ammonia recycle (ARP), controlled pH, dilute sulfuric acid, lime, and sulfur dioxide pretreatments to better understand factors that control glucose and xylose release following 24, 48, and 72 h of hydrolysis and define promising routes to reducing enzyme demands. Glucose removal was higher from all pretreatments than from Avicel cellulose at lower enzyme loadings, but sugar release was a bit lower for solids prepared by dilute sulfuric acid in the Sunds s

The influence of chemical and physical forms of ambient air acids on airway doses.

The effects of ambient relative humidity and particle size on acid deposition within the airways have been examined with a computer model. For H2SO4 particles initially at 90% relative humidity in ambient air that are inhaled via the nose or mouth, there is significant deposition of acid in the airways even in the presence of typical values of respiratory NH3. When these same particles are found in a fog at 100.015% relative humidity, there is significant deposition of acid in the nasal region during nose breathing but insignificant deposition to the deep lung for either nose or mouth breathin

Dietary Sulfur Compounds and Halitosis: Bridging Food Science, Microbial Metabolism, and Oral Health: A Comprehensive Review.

Intraoral halitosis is predominantly caused by anaerobic microbes within the tongue biofilm that break down sulfur-containing amino acids, especially cysteine and methionine, to volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs). In addition to microbial activity, there is growing evidence to suggest that dietary factors are able to influence VSC formation by affecting substrate availability, redox equilibrium, and oral ecological stability and that some of these effects are due to extraoral metabolic activity. This review integrates food chemistry, microbial ecology, and oral health to explain how dietary expo

Metal and Additive-Free Nondirected Meta-C-S Bond Formation on Anilines: Toward Biologically Relevant S‑Aryl Dithiocarbamates.

The site-selective C-H functionalization to install meta-C-S bonds on aniline derivatives is highly desirable, due to the preponderance of resulting compounds in numerous medicinally relevant compounds. However, the execution of the same is far from being trivial, due to the intrinsic electronic bias of anilines and concerns associated with the ready availability of an appropriate and odorless sulfur source. Accordingly, we demonstrate a metal- and additive-free, one-pot, multicomponent reaction between p-anisidines/anilines, carbon disulfide, and aliphatic amines to install an otherwise diffi

Mechanisms underlying the formation of main volatile odor sulfur compounds in foods during thermal processing.

Volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) significantly influence food flavor and garner considerable attention in flavor research due to their low sensory thresholds, diverse odor attributes, and high reactivity. Extensive research studies have explored VSC formation through thermal processes such as the Maillard reaction, thermal pyrolysis, oxidation, and enzymatic reactions. However, understanding of the specific reaction mechanisms and processes remains limited. This is due to the dispersed nature of existing studies, the undefined intermediates involved, and the complexity of the matrices and proc

Sulfur radical formation from the tropospheric irradiation of aqueous sulfate aerosols.

The sulfate anion radical (SO4•-) is known to be formed in the autoxidation chain of sulfur dioxide and from minor reactions when sulfate or bisulfate ions are activated by OH radicals, NO3 radicals, or iron. Here, we report a source of SO4•-, from the irradiation of the liquid water of sulfate-containing organic aerosol particles under natural sunlight and laboratory UV radiation. Irradiation of aqueous sulfate mixed with a variety of atmospherically relevant organic compounds degrades the organics well within the typical lifetime of aerosols in the atmosphere. Products of the SO4•- + organic

Determination of added sulfites in dried garlic with a modified version of the optimized Monier-Williams method.

The optimized Monier-Williams method is slightly modified so that it could be applied for determining sulfite content in dried garlic. Dried garlic sample is directly acidified in a reactor at a pH below 3. At this pH level, the alliinase enzyme activity is irreversibly blocked, and the sulfur-containing amino acids such as alliin (the most abundant) present in dried garlic cannot be transformed into corresponding thiosulfinates such as allicin, which is absent in dried garlic. This prevents allicin from reacting with added sulfites and being probably converted to S-allyl thiosulfate, which is

Comparison of volatile compounds isolated from the skin and flesh of four potato cultivars after baking.

Four potato cultivars, Cara, Nadine, Fianna, and Marfona, were selected. Potatoes were baked in their skins prior to separating the skin and flesh and preparing extracts of the volatile flavor compounds using a modified Likens--Nickerson apparatus. The concentrated extracts were analyzed by gas chromatography--mass spectrometry. Volatiles were identified and classified according to their origin, that is, lipid, sugar degradation and/or Maillard reaction not involving sulfur amino acids, sulfur compounds, methoxypyrazines, and other compounds. Quantitative and qualitative differences were obser

Insights into the Versatile Sulfur Metabolism of Sulfurovum sp. MH2-6 Isolated from Deep-Sea Hydrothermal Vent Environments.

In deep-sea hydrothermal ecosystems, inorganic sulfur compounds serve as key energy sources for microbes through oxidation, reduction, or disproportionation reactions. However, to date, the bacteria that disproportionate sulfur remain poorly understood. Here, we characterized the physiological and metabolic characteristics of Sulfurovum sp. MH2-6, which was isolated from hydrothermal sediments of the South Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Based on the results of 16S rRNA gene sequence, average nucleotide identity, and DNA-DNA hybridization value, strain MH2-6 belonged to the same species as Sulfurovum mang

Pulsed Electrolysis Prevents Sulfur Poisoning for Sustained Sulfide Valorization.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a toxic byproduct generated from metallurgy, incineration, and natural gas purification, poses serious environmental and health risks. Current treatments (e.g., the Claus process) are energy-intensive and generate secondary waste. Electrochemical sulfide oxidation (SOR) offers an energy-efficient alternative for simultaneous H2S removal and recovery of high-purity hydrogen and sulfur, but its application is hindered by anode deactivation due to sulfur deposition. Here, we report a dynamic microenvironment engineering strategy using pulsed electrolysis (PE) to achieve su

Oxidation of phosphorothioate DNA modifications leads to lethal genomic instability.

Genomic modification by sulfur in the form of phosphorothioate (PT) is widespread among prokaryotes, including human pathogens. Apart from its physiological functions, PT sulfur has redox and nucleophilic properties that suggest effects on bacterial fitness in stressful environments. Here we show that PTs are dynamic and labile DNA modifications that cause genomic instability during oxidative stress. In experiments involving isotopic labeling coupled with mass spectrometry, we observed sulfur replacement in PTs at a rate of ∼2% h-1 in unstressed Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica. Wherea

Detection of Cr6+ by the sulfur oxidizing bacteria biosensor: effect of different physical factors.

A biosensor based on sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) for detection of toxic chemicals in water was developed. SOB are acidophilic microorganisms that get their energy through the oxidation of reduced sulfur compounds in the presence of oxygen to produce sulfuric acid. The reaction results in an increase in electrical conductivity (EC) and a decrease in pH. The bioassay is based on the inhibition of SOB in the presence of toxic chemicals by measuring changes in EC and pH. The effect of different physical factors such as HRT, inorganic sulfur (S°) particle size, and temperature on detection of C

Chemical characterization of the acid alteration of diesel fuel: Non-targeted analysis by two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with time-of-flight mass spectrometry with tile-based Fisher ratio and combinatorial threshold determination.

The illicit chemical alteration of petroleum fuels is of keen interest, particularly to regulatory agencies that set fuel specifications, or taxes/credits based on those specifications. One type of alteration is the reaction of diesel fuel with concentrated sulfuric acid. Such reactions are known to subtly alter the chemical composition of the fuel, particularly the aromatic species native to the fuel. Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOFMS) is well suited for the analysis of diesel fuel, but may provide the analyst with an o

Evidence of recovery of Juniperus virginiana trees from sulfur pollution after the Clean Air Act.

Using dendroisotopic techniques, we show the recovery of Juniperus virginiana L. (eastern red cedar) trees in the Central Appalachian Mountains from decades of acidic pollution. Acid deposition over much of the 20th century reduced stomatal conductance of leaves, thereby increasing intrinsic water-use efficiency of the Juniperus trees. These data indicate that the stomata of Juniperus may be more sensitive to acid deposition than to increasing atmospheric CO2. A breakpoint in the 100-y δ(13)C tree ring chronology occurred around 1980, as the legacy of sulfur dioxide emissions declined followin

Growth of Rhodosporidium toruloides strain DBVPG 6662 on dibenzothiophene crystals and orimulsion.

Strains DBVPG 6662 and DBVPG 6739 of Rhodosporidium toruloides, a basidiomycete yeast, grew on thiosulfate as a sulfur source and glucose (2 g liter(-1) or 10.75 mM) as a carbon source. DBVPG 6662 has a defective sulfate transport system, whereas DBVPG 6739 barely grew on sulfate. They were compared for the ability to use dibenzothiophene (DBT) and related organic sulfur compounds as sulfur sources. In the presence of glucose as a carbon source and DBT as a sulfur source, strain DBVPG 6662 grew better than DBVPG 6739. In the presence of thiosulfate as a sulfur source, the two yeast strains did

A review of our development of dental adhesives--effects of radical polymerization initiators and adhesive monomers on adhesion.

This paper reviews the development of dental adhesives by collating information of related studies from original scientific papers, reviews, and patent literatures. Through our development, novel radical polymerization initiators, adhesive monomers, and microcapsules were synthesized, and their effects on adhesion were investigated. It was found that 5-monosubstituted barbituric acid (5-MSBA)-containing ternary initiators in conjunction with adhesive monomers contributed to effective adhesion with good polymerization reactivity. Several kinds of novel adhesive monomers bearing carboxyl group,

The role of aldehydes on sulfur based-new particle formation: a theoretical study.

Aldehydes play a crucial role in the formation of atmospheric particles, attracting significant attention due to their environmental impact. However, the microscopic mechanisms underlying the formation of aldehyde-involved particles remain uncertain. In this study, through quantum chemical calculations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we investigate the microscopic formation mechanisms of binary and ternary systems composed of three representative aldehydes, two sulfur-based acids, water, and two bases. Our research findings reveal that the most stable structures of acid-aldehyde clust

Unexpectedly rapid aerosol formation in the Hunga Tonga plume.

The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai (HT-HH) volcanic eruptions on January 13 and 15, 2022, produced a plume with the highest signal in stratospheric aerosol optical depth observed since the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991. Suites of balloon-borne instruments on a series of launches from Réunion Island intercepted the HT-HH plume between 7 and 10 d of the eruptions, yielding observations of the aerosol number and size distribution and sulfur dioxide (SO2) and water vapor (H2O) concentrations. The measurements reveal an unexpected abundance of large particles in the plume, constrain the total sulfur

Surface runoff alters cave microbial community structure and function.

Caves formed by sulfuric acid dissolution have been identified worldwide. These caves can host diverse microbial communities that are responsible for speleogenesis and speleothem formation. It is not well understood how microbial communities change in response to surface water entering caves. Illumina 16S rRNA sequencing and bioinformatic tools were used to determine the impact of surface water on the microbial community diversity and function within a spring pool found deep in the Monte Conca Cave system in Sicily, Italy. Sulfur oxidizers comprised more than 90% of the microbial community dur
