This editorial discusses the possibility of family life and plastic surgery residency successfully coexisting when training programs intentionally foster supportive cultures, flexible policies, and equitable parental leave. Drawing on personal experiences from a highly family-friendly program, together with emerging literature on pregnancy, parenthood, childcare, and career advancement in surgery, we challenge the notion that residents must choose between surgical excellence and family life. Some practical strategies, including shared workload, flexible scheduling, lactation support, peer ment

OBJECTIVE: To test the applicability of a fresh tissue model for teaching facial plastic techniques and approaches to the eyelids and orbit.
DESIGN: Observational animal experiments.
SUBJECTS: Ten prepubescent sheep heads harvested following humane euthanasia at the completion of unrelated live animal research.
METHODS: Young sheep were saline perfused at the end of an in vivo protocol. Head and neck tissues were harvested and refrigerated for 3-7 days. An experienced oculoplastic surgeon and an otolaryngologist explored the feasibility of common oculoplastic procedures in the ovine model.

BACKGROUND: Plastic surgery may have traditionally been labelled as a "less essential" service at many academic medical centers in the United States. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the role of the plastic surgery team as a valuable service at an academic medical center.
METHODS: We performed a 10-year retrospective case review of a single plastic surgeon's case log at 2 academic medical institutions, each with an active plastic surgery training program. Plastic surgical procedures performed in combination with other services and surgical management of complications from nonplastic s

BACKGROUND: Program directors in plastic surgery had met annually as a committee of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons since the early 1970s. In 1984, Dr. Ronald Berggren, then chairman of the committee, asked Dr. Elvin Zook to head a subcommittee charged with exploring the desirability and feasibility of a separate program director's organization. The subcommittee enthusiastically supported the concept, leading to the founding of the Association of Academic Chairmen in Plastic Surgery.
METHODS: All available documents related to the development and functioning of the organization s

Plastic surgeons with a practice that includes breast augmentation, breast reduction, and breast reconstruction should have a working knowledge of both genetic and environmental breast cancer risk factors and of risk stratification of these patients. Specific tests to determine genetic susceptibility to certain cancers have become increasingly prevalent during recent years. Such testing is carried out by multidisciplinary teams, which may include plastic surgeons. Patients with a very strong family history of positive genetic testing for BRCA1 or BRCA2 may be offered prophylactic mastectomies.

BACKGROUND: Plastic and reconstructive surgery (PRS) encompasses a wide range of procedures, and postoperative complications remain a persistent challenge. While preoperative laboratory values (PLVs) are routinely assessed, their predictive value for postoperative outcomes in PRS is unclear. This study evaluates the association between PLVs and postoperative morbidity to enhance risk stratification.
METHODS: The ACS-NSQIP database (2008-2022) was analyzed for PRS patients. PLVs included sodium, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, albumin, bilirubin, SGOT, alkaline phosphatase, white blood cell c

Three-dimensional (3D) printing is revolutionizing medical prosthetics by providing custom-fitted designs and enhanced functionality for patients suffering from severe trauma that requires amputation or severe restoration measures. In fields such as plastic surgery and radiology, 3D-printed prosthetics enable physicians to empower patients with solutions that align closely with individual anatomical differences for increased restored functionality and form-fitting aesthetics, improving patients' quality of life and restoring their ability to perform activities of daily living. This narrative r

OBJECTIVE: Current available plastic surgery positions in craniofacial surgery are not commensurate with the growing number of trained plastic surgery residents and fellows interested in the field. Despite this, there is growing demand for surgery in other areas of the craniofacial field, such as facial gender-affirming surgery (GAS), in which academic plastic surgery programs can increase resident and fellow case exposure. The present study sought to characterize the increase in craniofacial surgery exposure with the introduction of a GAS rotation among plastic surgery residents at one academ

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this Web-based survey was to elucidate the current perspectives of plastic surgery residency program directors on training residents to perform gender-affirming surgery.
METHODS: Web-based surveys were distributed to 79 plastic surgery program directors. Demographic information and perspectives on training of gender-affirming surgery in plastic surgery residency were queried.
RESULTS: Of 79 distributed surveys, there were 43 responses (54 percent). Overall, program directors reported that their trainees were prepared to address plastic surgery-related transgender c

Various data sources have identified labiaplasty or nymphoplasty, aimed at the reduction of the labia minora, as an aesthetic intervention in high demand by Brazilian women and adolescents, with Brazil as the world's leading country in the performance of this surgery. This essay discusses how and by whom the dissemination of this image is promoted and produced, with the increase in demand and in the number of surgeries performed. The study is based on an analysis of scientific journals, press stories, and other documents. The approach employs a cross-analysis of social studies of science and t

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) are widely used for glycemic control and weight management in patients with type 2 diabetes and obesity, and their use has become increasingly common among candidates for elective plastic surgery. As a result, plastic surgeons are frequently encountering patients receiving GLP-1 RA therapy in the setting of metabolic and inflammatory comorbidities that may influence perioperative risk. This focused review examines the existing literature on GLP-1 RAs and contextualizes their biologic effects with considerations relevant to elective plastic

Academic engagement in plastic and reconstructive surgery (PRS) has grown substantially, marked by an increasing number of professional societies, annual meetings, and peer-reviewed journals. While this growth has facilitated innovation, collaboration, and knowledge sharing, it has also introduced financial burdens. These costs may limit access to academic involvement, especially for early-career surgeons and those without institutional funding. Despite the implications these financial barriers pose for equity, academic engagement, and innovation within the field, the cumulative cost of academ
