Introduction Along the border between the abdominal cavity and pelvis are nervous structures that belong to the autonomous nervous system, which is delicate. These can be easily injured during regional surgical procedures such as the total mesorectal excision, where the preservation of the nervous structures should be one of the main objectives. In our study, we aimed to dissect all the sympathetic nerve formations listed at the abdominopelvic border and to present their formation, anatomical routes, and relations, as well as the surgical importance of their preservation. Method We performed a

Traditionally considered as a uniform broadcaster of the "fight-or-flight" response, the sympathetic nervous system is emerging as an amalgamation of distinct and functionally complementary neuronal units. In this issue of Neuron, Wei, Ma et al.1 uncover new aspects of the organizational principles of the sympathetic celiac-superior mesenteric ganglion.

The article deals with a new medical technhique for the assessment of autonomic regulation of internal systems and skin. We suggest investigating skin sympathetic nervous activity by the method of electrodermal testing of skin sympathetic reactions. It has been showed that current of 200-250 microamperes and 12 volts is optimal for testing the skin sympathetic responses in adult patients. We observed 12 groups of patients with various diseases and a control group of apparently healthy people. Each of the experimental groups consisted of people with severe or moderately severe pathology of a ce

Clinical digestive disorders depend on the non-adequate coupling of functioning of the gastrointestinal tract with that of its affluent systems, namely, the pancreatic exocrine and the hepato-biliary secretions. The secretion of gastrointestinal hormones is monitored by the peripheral autonomic nervous system. However, the latter is regulated by the central nervous system (CNS) circuitry localized at the medullary pontine segment of the CNS. In turn, both parasympathetic and adrenergic medullary circuitries are regulated by the pontine A5 noradrenergic (NA) and the dorsal raphe serotonergic nu

The autonomic nervous system maintains internal homeostasis by regulating cardiovascular, thermoregulatory, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, exocrine, and pupillary function. Testing and quantifying autonomic nervous system function is an important but difficult area of clinical neurophysiology. Tests of parasympathetic cardiovagal regulation include heart rate analysis during standing (the 30:15 ratio), heart rate variation with deep breathing, and the Valsalva ratio. Tests of sympathetic adrenergic vascular regulation include blood pressure analysis while standing, the Valsalva maneuver, sus

The vagus nerve (VN) is the longest nerve of the organism and a major component of the parasympathetic nervous system which constitutes the autonomic nervous system (ANS), with the sympathetic nervous system. There is classically an equilibrium between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems which is responsible for the maintenance of homeostasis. An imbalance of the ANS is observed in various pathologic conditions. The VN, a mixed nerve with 4/5 afferent and 1/5 efferent fibers, is a key component of the neuro-immune and brain-gut axes through a bidirectional communication between…

PURPOSE: We have re-evaluated the anatomical arguments that underlie the division of the spinal visceral outflow into sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions.
METHODOLOGY: Using a systematic literature search, we mapped the location of catecholaminergic neurons throughout the mammalian peripheral nervous system. Subsequently, a narrative method was employed to characterize segment-dependent differences in the location of preganglionic cell bodies and the composition of white and gray rami communicantes.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: One hundred seventy studies were included in the systematic rev

The heart's innervation relies on a delicate balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, each using distinct neurotransmitters to regulate heart rate, contractility, and vascular tone. The sympathetic division primarily uses norepinephrine, whereas the parasympathetic division operates through acetylcholine. A range of diseases, through intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms, can disrupt these neural pathways, resulting in autonomic dysfunction. This review highlights intrinsic causes such as dysautonomias, amyloidosis, diabetes mellitus, Parkinsonian syndromes, and Lewy b…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To examine published and unpublished data documenting the role of sympathetic neural factors in the pathogenesis of different hypertensive phenotypes. These phenotypes relate to attended or unattended blood pressure measurements, to nighttime blood pressure profile alterations, and to resistant, pseudoresistant, and refractory hypertension. Results of original clinical studies as well as of recent meta-analyses based on the behavior of different sympathetic biomarkers in various hypertensive forms will be also discussed.
RECENT FINDINGS: Studies performed in the past decade

Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a life-threatening condition, and although its two main complications-cerebral vasospasm (CVS)/delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) and early brain injury (EBI)-have been widely studied, prognosis has not improved over time. The sympathetic nerve (SN) system is important for the regulation of cardiovascular function and is closely associated with cerebral vessels and the regulation of cerebral blood flow and cerebrovascular function; thus, excessive SN activation leads to a rapid breakdown of homeostasis in the brain. In the hyperacute phase, patients with SAH can e

Hypertension remains a major and growing public health problem associated with the greatest global rate of cardiovascular morbidity and mort … novel insights into hypertension. This review briefly summarizes the role of the centrally mediated sympathetic nervous system in hypertension, the therapeutic strategies that distinctively target impaired neural reflex mechanisms, and potential implications for future clinical research and therapies.

Excess adiposity is associated with increased incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Importantly, CVD mortality associated with obesity is more prevalent in young individuals. Elevated sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity is present in obesity, even in individuals who are young and otherwise healthy. Baseline SNS overactivity, as well as blunted sympathetically mediated thermogenic response to a meal may play a critical role in the development and progression of CVD which is likely to develop as a result of multiple factors. Recent data indicate that SNS activity to the skeletal muscl…

Idiopathic Raynaud's disease is characterized by abnormally prolonged episodic peripheral vasospasm in response to cold or emotional stimuli. Its pathogenetic mechanism remains still unknown, although two theories attempt to explain it. Raynaud hypothesized an overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system, whereas Lewis postulated a 'local defect' at the level of precapillary resistance vessels. The controversy in both theories is discussed with respect to our knowledge of general and local control mechanisms in the peripheral vasculature.

BACKGROUND: Our previous study has shown that stimulation of the vagus nerve with low-intensity focused ultrasound could modulate blood pres … in the FUS group than in the Control group after stimulation, indicating that the activities of the sympathetic nervous system and renin-angiotensin system of the vagus nerve might be inhibited by FUS of the vagus nerve.
CONCLUSION: These findings reveal the mechanism of BP lowing in response to FUS of the vagus nerve.Clinical Relevance-This study revealed the mechanism of …
