Surrogacy: The experience of Greek commissioning women.

BACKGROUND: Available studies on surrogacy are extremely limited. Findings suggest that surrogacy is experienced as problem free, with a significant number of commissioning mothers maintaining contact with the surrogates over time. AIM: To explore the experiences of Greek commissioning women regarding the surrogacy arrangement and birth of a child through surrogacy. METHODS: The data of this study were collected from 7 intended mothers who had either a long history of infertility or serious health problems. Interviews were tape-recorded, transcribed and analysed employing content analysis.

A Single-Case Study of Resiliency After Extreme Incest in an Old Order Amish Family.

This exploratory research brief presents a single case study of the resiliency of "Mary B." She grew up in an Old Order Amish family where isolation, secrecy, and patriarchy masked repeated sexual assaults by her older brothers that began at age 7. By the age of 20, Mary alleged she had been raped on more than 200 separate occasions by members of her Amish family. After years of pleading with her mother and church officials to intervene, she sought therapy outside the Amish community. This led to three of her brothers being incarcerated. Her family disowned her and she was banned from the Amis

"Why me? I don't fit the mould … I am a freak of nature": a qualitative study of women's experience of gout.

BACKGROUND: Gout is more common in men, and is often perceived by both patients and health practitioners to be a disorder of men, but its prevalence in women is increasing. Little is known about women's experience of gout and the impact it has on their lives. It is important for practitioners to be aware of these areas, given the increasing numbers of women with gout they are likely to see in the future. This study aimed to explore women's experiences of gout. METHODS: A qualitative research design was used. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 43 people, of whom 14 were women. Inte

Online automated detection of cerebral embolic signals using a wavelet-based system.

Transcranial Doppler ultrasound (US) can be used to detect emboli in the cerebral circulation. We have implemented and evaluated the first online wavelet-based automatic embolic signal-detection system, based on a fast discrete wavelet transform algorithm using the Daubechies 8th order wavelet. It was evaluated using a group of middle cerebral artery recordings from 10 carotid stenosis patients, and a 1-h compilation tape from patients with particularly small embolic signals, and compared with the most sensitive commercially available software package (FS-1), which is based on a frequency-filt

Limits on reacquisition of song in adult zebra finches exposed to white noise.

Zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) learn a specific song pattern during a sensitive period of development, after which song changes little or not at all. However, recent studies have demonstrated substantial behavioral plasticity in song behavior during adulthood under a range of conditions. The current experiment examined song behavior of adult zebra finches temporarily deprived of auditory feedback by chronic exposure to loud white noise (WN). Long-term exposure to continuous WN resulted in disruption of song similar to that observed after deafening. When auditory feedback was restored by d

Food transport and bolus formation during complete feeding sequences on foods of different initial consistency.

Food movements during complete feeding sequences on soft and hard foods (8 g of chicken spread, banana, and hard cookie) were investigated in 10 normal subjects; 6 of these subjects also ate 8 g peanuts. Foods were coated with barium sulfate. Lateral projection videofluorographic tapes were analyzed, and jaw and hyoid movements were established after digitization of records for 6 subjects. Sequences were divided into phases, each involving different food management behaviors. After ingestion, the bite was moved to the postcanines by a pull-back tongue movement (Stage I transport) and processed

Information recall in genetic counselling: a pilot study of its assessment.

One of the main aims of genetic counselling is to provide information to patients that they can understand and recall. Measuring information recall is problematic and most studies do not make the comparison between recalled information and the information that is given in consultations. The aim of this study was to determine the validity of using genetic counsellors' reports of information given in genetic consultations as the basis for a measure of patient recall. Counsellors in 35 routine genetic counselling consultations were asked to indicate important information given during consultation

[Functional electromyography analysis of radial replacement operation].

The aim of this electromyographic study was to evaluate the functional result of tendon transfers for radial palsy. Eighteen patients were compared to 16 healthy volunteers. The intramuscular emg of four muscles was recorded in parallel during extension-flexion movements of the wrist and fingers. The data were stored on FM tape and evaluated off-line. Contrary to expectations, transferred flexor muscles revealed only part of their overall emg activity during extension. Therefore, an "extensor quota" (EQ) was calculated for each muscle. It reflects its emg activity during extension as part of i

Information, support, and communication needs of women with a family history of breast cancer.

In this article, the role of information, support, and communication in promoting adaptation to the risk of breast cancer is reported. These variables emerged from an in-depth study of women at risk for breast cancer because of breast cancer in one or more of their primary (first degree) relatives. Fifty-five women with mothers, sisters, mother and sister, or mother and another primary relative were interviewed using in-depth semi-structured, tape-recorded interviews. After transcription, data were analyzed using qualitative analysis procedures. A three-phase process of adaptation to the risk

Relation between QT and RR intervals in patients with bradyarrhythmias.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relation between QT and RR intervals in the sick sinus syndrome or high degree atrioventricular block. PATIENTS: 32 patients with episodes of prolonged RR intervals (> or = 2.6 s) on Holter electrocardiographic recordings. DESIGN: QT and RR intervals were measured manually every 100 to 150 beats on electrocardiographic strips reprinted from the Holter tape over 24 hours. The slope of the QT/RR relation was determined by the linear regression equation for RR intervals < or = 1.4 s (slope 1) and > 1.4 s (slope 2). RESULTS: Slope 2 (0.0068 (0.0030)) was significan
