UNLABELLED: Black henna tattoos have paraphenylenediamine (PPD), which contains a product of herbal origin, which due to its molecular characteristics is capable of inducing, in susceptible individuals, a type IV hypersensitivity reaction. It clinically manifests as a contact dermatitis that usually when it disappears, scarring and hypopigmentation are left in the injured area.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the case of a patient with hypersensitivity to henna tattoo and to present the most relevant phenomena associated with this condition.

We report on a 14-year-old boy who was presented to the emergency department with an acute swelling of the face and scalp 3 days after using a new hair dye. The patient had applied a black henna tattoo 1 year earlier. The female patient with a variety of genital tract symptoms offers a distinct challenge to the gynecologist. We report a case that on initial examination was thought to be pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). After further evaluation, our patient was found to be suffering from toxic shock syndrome, which in many ways may resemble PID. This case demonstrates the importance of a careful and thorough evaluation of the gynecologic patient who has several nonspecific signs and symptoms.

A technique embodying the use of chemical agents and the argon laser was developed in the 1981-1982 that provides for a more complete removal of tattoo dye with one treatment. The number of visits for the laser treatment to the patient is reduced to two or three treatment sessions, compared to five to eight visits previously required. The area of "chemo-laser" approximated the normal skin without hypertrophic scar tissue more than the areas of multiple or heavy laser treatment.
