BACKGROUND: Comorbid stress-induced mood and alcohol use disorders are increasingly prevalent among female patients. Stress exposure can disrupt salience processing and goal-directed decision making, contributing to persistent maladaptive behavioral patterns; these and other stress-sensitive cognitive and behavioral processes rely on dynamic and coordinated signaling by midline and intralaminar thalamic nuclei. Considering the role of social trauma in the trajectory of these debilitating psychopathologies, identifying vulnerable thalamic cells may provide guidance for targeting persistent stre…

By recording the evoked potentials in the cortex and thalamic nuclei, afferent reactions of gastroduodenal components were studied early after acute gastroduodenal lesion in acute feline experiments. A model of acute ulcer in various gastric portions and the duodenal bulb gave rise to inhibition of their afferentation. This phenomenon was most pronounced in pyloric ulcer. It is concluded that the inhibition of the afferent reactions of gastroduodenal components in early periods after their acute lesion is a specific protective reaction of the viscera and appears mainly at the intraorgan level.

The round of stationary obstacles demanding localizing and definition of objects, was restored within 12--17 days after cutting of both optic nerves in Rana temporaria. Electrophysiological data indicated the restoration of connection between the retina and rostral thalamic nuclei by this time. The on-type impulse reactions to light stimuli in retinal ganglionic cell endings were observed. Retino-tectal connections were still disrupted. The role of retino-diencephalic projections in organization of the frog visually guided behaviour, is discussed.

Two sisters had Behr syndrome; autopsy was performed on one. The autopsy revealed central atrophy of the optic nerves and total disarray of the normal laminar pattern of the lateral geniculate nucleus, dropout of neurons, and gliosis. There were numerous axonal spheroids in the neuropil. Similar spheroids with cell loss and gliosis were also observed in other thalamic nuclei and, rarely, in the pallida. We raise the possibility that Behr syndrome is a manifestation of a heterogeneous group of disorders, and suggest relationship of this particular disease to infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy.

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia, classified as a painful disorder of the trigeminal nerve (PDTN), is characterized by brief, electric shock … onic pain, PDTN patients exhibited significant volumetric reductions in eight amygdala and nineteen thalamic nuclei, as well as eighteen hippocampal subfields. When compared to the chronic pain group, significant differences were restricted to six thalamic nuclei and seven hippocampal subfields.
CONCLUSIONS: These findings underscore that PDTN is associated with …

The thalamus and cortex are interconnected both functionally and anatomically and share a common developmental trajectory. Interactions between the mediodorsal thalamus (MD) and different parts of the prefrontal cortex are essential in cognitive processes, such as learning and adaptive decision-making. Cortico-thalamocortical interactions involving other dorsal thalamic nuclei, including the anterior thalamus and pulvinar, also influence these cognitive processes. Our work, and that of others, indicates a crucial influence of these interdependent cortico-thalamocortical neural networks that co…

Posterior thalamic pulvinar nuclei have been implicated in different aspects of spatial attention, but their exact role in humans remain unclear. Most neuropsychological studies of attention deficits after pulvinar lesion have concerned single patients or small samples. Here we examined a group of 13 patients with focal damage to posterior thalamus on a visual search task with faces, allowing us to test several hypotheses concerning pulvinar function in controlling attention to visually salient or emotionally significant stimuli. Our results identified two subgroups of thalamic patients with d

The GABAA receptor is the most abundant inhibitory receptor in the human brain and is assembled from a variety of different subunit subtypes which determines their pharmacology and physiology. To determine which GABAA receptor subunit proteins are found in the human thalamus we investigated the distribution of five major GABAA receptor subunits α1, α2, α3, β2,3 and γ2 using immunohistochemical techniques. The α1-, β2,3- and γ2- subunits which combine to form a benzodiazepine sensitive GABAA receptor showed the most intense levels of staining and were the most common subunits found throughout t

gamma-Aminobutyric acid type B (GABAB) receptors are involved in the modulation of neuronal activity in response to chronic noxious input. However, the effect of their activation in chronic inflammatory pain in relay thalamic nuclei such as the ventrobasal complex (VB) is not known. In this study, experimental groups of 2, 4, and 14 days monoarthritic (MA) rats were injected with saline (controls) or baclofen (0.875 microg), a specific GABAB receptor agonist, in the VB contralateral to the inflamed joint, and the ankle-bend test was performed. Ankle-bend scores in control animals were near the…

Anterior nucleus of the thalamus deep brain stimulation (ANT DBS) offers a treatment option for patients with drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE). This treatment modality is particularly useful in cases of multifocal DRE originating from the frontal and temporal lobes. Here we present a 36-year-old epileptic patient who underwent ANT DBS implantation. The incidence of seizures dropped significantly after surgery, though the patient still experienced occasional seizure episodes. After 9 months, the patient sustained a head injury due to bilateral tonic-clonic seizures (BTCS), leading to the developme

Social memory has been developed in humans and other animals to recognize familiar conspecifics and is essential for their survival and reproduction. Here, we demonstrated that parvalbumin-positive neurons in the sensory thalamic reticular nucleus (sTRNPvalb) are necessary and sufficient for mice to memorize conspecifics. sTRNPvalb neurons receiving glutamatergic projections from the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) transmit individual information by inhibiting the parafascicular thalamic nucleus (PF). Mice in which the PPCCaMKII→sTRNPvalb→PF circuit was inhibited exhibited a disrupted ability

Emerging neuromodulatory treatments, such as deep brain stimulation (DBS) and responsive neurostimulation (RNS), have shown promise in reducing drug-resistant seizures. While centromedian thalamic nucleus and anterior thalamic nucleus stimulation have been effective in certain types of seizures, limited research has explored pulvinar nucleus stimulation for epilepsy. To address this gap, we conducted a systematic review and individual patient data analysis. Of 78 resultant articles, 5 studies with transient stimulation and chronic stimulation of the pulvinar nucleus were included. Of the 20 pa

The thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN) is a shell-like structure comprised of GABAergic neurons that surrounds the dorsal thalamus. While playing a key role in modulating thalamocortical interactions, TRN inhibition of thalamic activity is often thought of as having an all-or-none impact. Although TRN neurons have a dynamic firing range, it remains unclear how variable rates of TRN activity gate thalamocortical transmission. To address this, we examined the ultrastructural features and functional synaptic properties of the feedback connections in the mouse thalamus between TRN and the dorsal lat

Cross-modal auditory influence on cell activity in the primary visual cortex emerging at short latencies raises the possibility that the first-order visual thalamic nucleus, which is considered dedicated to unimodal visual processing, could contribute to cross-modal sensory processing, as has been indicated in the auditory and somatosensory systems. To test this hypothesis, the effects of sound stimulation on visual cell activity in the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus were examined in anesthetized rats, using juxta-cellular recording and labeling techniques. Visual responses evoked by light

CLINICAL VIGNETTE: A 51-year-old man with essential tremor (ET) had bilateral ventralis intermedius nucleus deep brain stimulation (VIM-DBS) placed to address refractory tremor. Despite well-placed DBS leads and adequate tremor response, he subsequently experienced worsening. Re-programming of the device and reconfirming the electrical thresholds for benefits and side effects were both performed. Six years following DBS implantation, repeat imaging revealed brain atrophy and a measured lead position change with a coincident change in clinical response.

OBJECTIVE: Ascending Reticular Activating System (ARAS) has a key role in consciousness. The ARAS is a complex network consisting of a portion of the brainstem reticular formation, nonspecific thalamic nuclei, hypothalamus, Basal Forebrain (BF), and cerebral cortex. We examined the reconstruction method and features of the neural tract between the hypothalamus and the BF in normal subjects, using Diffusion Tensor Tractography (DTT).
METHODS: Twenty-three healthy subjects were recruited. The ARAS between the hypothalamus and the BF was reconstructed by two Regions of Interest (ROIs): 1) seed R…

Accordingly, including thalamus, particularly reticular nucleus and higher order thalamic nuclei, which functions as a hub connecting the visual, somatosensory, language and motor cortical areas and subjects to modulation by brain stem projections into the CSD theory, would greatly improve our current understanding of migraine.

The paraventricular thalamic nucleus (PVT) is a part of epithalamus and sends outputs to emotion-related brain areas such as the medial prefrontal cortex, nucleus accumbens, and amygdala. Various functional roles of the PVT in emotion-related behaviors are drawing attention. Here, we investigated the effect of manipulation of PVT neurons on the firing patterns of medial prefrontal cortical (mPFC) neurons and depression-like behavior. Extracellular single-unit recordings revealed that acute activation of PVT neurons by hM3Dq, an activation type of designer receptors exclusively activated by des
