Vortex-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction based on natural deep eutectic solvents for the determination of pyrethroid pesticides in urine.

A novel, facile, and environmentally friendly analytical method was developed based on vortex-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction and high-performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection for detecting pyrethroid pesticides (PPs) in urine. Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) were prepared using plant essential oil-derived monoterpenoids (thymol, carvacrol, and menthol) combined with aromatic primary alcohols (benzyl alcohol, phenethyl alcohol, and phenylpropyl alcohol) as hydrogen bond donors and acceptors. These solvents served as environmentally benign extraction media, th…

Structural Modification of Selected Essential Oil Components for Potential Anticancer Applications: A Review.

Monoterpenes (thymol, carvacrol, menthol) and phenylpropanoids (eugenol and cinnamaldehyde) and their related derivatives are naturally occurring bioactive compounds found in essential oils (EOs) and have attracted considerable interest as anticancer agents; however, their direct therapeutic use in cancer treatment is often limited by factors such as low bioavailability, moderate potency, and lack of target specificity. Recent studies have demonstrated that rational structural modification of these EO scaffolds can substantially enhance their anticancer potential. This review critically evalua…

Relationship between chemical structure and growth-inhibitory activity of monoterpenoids against pneumonia causing bacteria in vapor phase.

Volatile monoterpenoids represent promising candidates for inhalation-based therapies of respiratory infections due to their volatility and … re and antibacterial activity in vapor phase. Among all compounds tested, β-thujaplicin, carvacrol, thymol, and thymoquinone produced the strongest antibacterial effect. A comprehensive structure-activity relationship analysis of the chemical structure indicated that monoterpenoids bearing hydroxyl or ketone functional groups on six- or seven-membered ri …

Phytochemical Profiling and Bioactive Properties of Essential Oils from Endemic Palestinian Satureja thymbrifolia.

Despite several studies on the Satureja L. genus, the chemical composition and biological activities of the traditional medicinal plant Satureja thymbrifolia (White Thyme), a Palestinian endemic species, are still unknown. It grows in arid regions and is used by Bedouins as a traditional medicinal herb. This study aimed to investigate S. thymbrifolia essential oils (EOs), mainly from its phytochemical pattern and biological properties. The GC-MS study identified p-cymene (48.53 %) and thymol (23.27 %) as the leading EOs components. Compared to Trolox, the EOs showed potential anti-DPPH free ra…

FEMA GRAS assessment of natural flavor complexes: Origanum oil, thyme oil and related phenol derivative-containing flavoring ingredients.

In 2015, the Expert Panel of the Flavor and Extract Manufacturers Association (FEMA) initiated a re-evaluation of the safety of over 250 natural flavor complexes (NFCs) used as flavor ingredients, mostly consisting of a variety of essential oils and botanical extracts. This publication, seventh in the series, re-evaluates NFCs with constituent profiles dominated by phenolic derivatives including carvacrol, thymol and related compounds using a constituent-based procedure first published in 2005 and updated in 2018. The procedure is based on the chemical characterization of each NFC as intended …

The effects of Nigella sativa on respiratory, allergic and immunologic disorders, evidence from experimental and clinical studies, a comprehensive and updated review.

Nigella sativa (N. sativa) seed had been used traditionally due to several pharmacological effects. The updated experimental and clinical effects of N. sativa and its constituents on respiratory, allergic and immunologic disorders are provided in this comprehensive review article. Various databases including PubMed, Science Direct and Scopus were used. The preventive effects of N. sativa on pulmonary diseases were mainly due to its constituents such as thymoquinone, thymol, carvacrol and alpha-hederin. Extracts and constituents of N. sativa showed the relaxant effect, with possible mechanisms …

Antifungal activity screening for mint and thyme essential oils against Rhizopus stolonifer and their application in postharvest preservation of strawberry and peach fruits.

AIMS: With a goal to identify specific essential oils that can control postharvest Rhizopus rot on strawberry and peach fruits, we performed screening for 26 essential oils based on their antifungal activity against Rhizopus stolonifer in vitro and investigated the underlying mechanism. METHODS AND RESULTS: Mentha spicata (Ms), Mentha piperita (Mp), Thymus vulgaris CT carvacrol (Tc) and Thymus vulgaris CT thymol (Tt) exhibited strong inhibition on R. stolonifer growth in the screening. These essential oils increased plasma membrane permeability of R. stolonifer and resulted in the outflow of …

Antimicrobial Wound Dressings against Fluorescent and Methicillin-Sensitive Intracellular Pathogenic Bacteria.

There is limited evidence indicating that drug-eluting dressings are clinically more effective than simple conventional dressings. To shed light on this concern, we have performed evidence-based research to evaluate the antimicrobial action of thymol (THY)-loaded antimicrobial dressings having antibiofilm forming ability, able to eradicate intracellular and extracellular pathogenic bacteria. We have used four different Staphylococcus aureus strains, including the ATCC 25923 strain, the Newman strain (methicillin-sensitive strain, MSSA) expressing the coral green fluorescent protein from the ve…

Drug-in-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin-in-lipoid S100/cholesterol liposomes: Effect of the characteristics of essential oil components on their encapsulation and release.

Drug-in-cyclodextrin-in-liposome (DCL) represents a very promising approach for preserving essential oil (EO) components, thereby extending their shelf life and activity. In this study, we examined the effect of chemical structure, octanol/water partition coefficient (log P), and Henry's law constant (Hc) on the encapsulation and the release of monoterpenes (eucalyptol, pulegone, terpineol, and thymol) and phenylpropenes (estragole and isoeugenol) from DCLs.
