Molecular detection of Babesia microti in dromedary camels in Egypt.

Babesia microti (Apicomplexa: Piroplasmida) causes a medically important tick-borne zoonotic protozoan disease. Egyptian camels are susceptible to Babesia infection; however, just a few cases have been documented. This study aimed to identify Babesia species, specifically Babesia microti, and their genetic diversity in dromedary camels in Egypt and associated hard ticks. Blood and hard tick samples were taken from 133 infested dromedary camels slaughtered in Cairo and Giza abattoirs. The study was conducted from February to November 2021. The 18S rRNA gene was amplified by polymerase chain rea

Suspected tick paralysis (Ixodes holocyclus) in a Miniature Horse.

A 9-year-old Miniature Horse gelding infested with ticks (Ixodes holocyclus) was presented with flaccid motor paralysis causing recumbency. Neurological examination and other diagnostic tests did not identify an alternative aetiology, leading to a presumptive diagnosis of tick paralysis. The gelding was treated with tick antiserum and intensive supportive care. He made a gradual recovery over the 48 h following presentation and was discharged without further complications. This case report describes in detail the clinical signs and successful treatment of a Miniature Horse with flaccid paralys

Babesia bovis: infectivity of an attenuated strain of Brazilian origin for the tick vector, Boophilus microplus.

In order to verify the infectivity and transovarian transmission of one strain of Babesia bovis of Brazilian origin, attenuated by repeated passages in splenectomized calves to the biological tick vector, Boophilus microplus, an inoculation of that strain was performed in hemoparasite-free calves infested with hemoparasite-free ticks. Subsequently, engorged female ticks were collected to examine hemolymph and progeny for presence of developing stages of Babesia bovis. Using an optical microscope, intrahemocytic merozoites were observed in female hemolymph on the second and fourth days, respect

Possible Lyme meningitis.

Lyme disease was first recognized in 1975 because of a cluster of patients with arthritis in the vicinity of Lyme, Connecticut. Subsequently the arthritis was linked with erythema chronicum migrans (88%), cardiac (8%), and nervous system diseases (11%). By 1983, the etiology of the disease had been confirmed as an infection caused by a spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, transmitted to man by the bite of a tick, Ixodes dammini. Then it became apparent that this was the same disease reported as far back as the 1920's, known in Europe as tick-borne meningeal polyneuritis, lymphocytic meningoradicu

Efficacy and safety of geranium-oregano-thymol formulations to control of dog tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato under laboratory and field conditions.

The present study evaluated, in laboratory and field, the efficacy and safety of formulations of Pelargonium graveolens (geranium - G), Origanum majorana (oregano - O) commercial essential oils (EO) and thymol (T) to control of Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato. In the laboratory, three formulas (A: 2% tween 80%, B: powder and C: nanoemulsion) by a mixture of these components (GOT) were prepared and evaluated, and the best one was used to assess its safety and field application against R. sanguineus s. l. on naturally infested dogs. Besides the major compounds of the EO used were identified.

Capacity of European animals as reservoir hosts for the Lyme disease spirochete.

The abundance of spirochete-infected Ixodes ricinus ticks naturally derived from endemic rodents was compared to identify the reservoir hosts of the agent of Lyme disease at a series of enzootic sites in Central Europe. Black-striped mice appear to be the most important rodent host for the tick and infect more ticks with Borrelia burgdorferi than do other mice and voles tested. Although rodents infect about half of the ticks that feed on them, lizards infect none. These spirochete-incompetent hosts dilute the force of transmission because many nymphal ticks feed on them. Older male hosts are m

First molecular detection of Cytauxzoon felis and Babesia sp. in ticks collected from wildlife in Atwemonom bushmeat market of Ghana and their potential veterinary health implications.

Tick-borne protozoan parasites pose significant risks to veterinary health worldwide, affecting both companion animals and livestock. When wildlife and domestic animals come into contact due to habitat encroachment, the likelihood of pathogen transmission increases, with ticks serving as potential vectors. This study investigated the occurrence of tick-borne pathogens of veterinary concern in ticks collected from wildlife commonly hunted and sold at the Atwemonom Bushmeat Market in Kumasi, Ghana. Ticks removed from wildlife carcasses were identified morphologically and screened using primers t

Raman-based identification of tick species (Ixodidae) by spectroscopic analysis of their feces.

Ticks are blood-feeding parasites that vector a large number of pathogens of medical and veterinary importance. There are strong connections between tick and pathogen species. Timely detection of certain tick species on cattle can cease the spread of numerous devastating diseases such as Bovine babiesiosis and anaplasmosis. Detection of ticks is currently performed by slow and laborious scout-based inspection of cattle. In this study, we investigated the possibility of identification of tick species (Ixodidae) based on spectroscopic signatures of their feces. We collected Raman spectra from in

Tick prevention at a crossroad: new and renewed solutions.

Ticks have major economic impact through diseases they transmit, direct losses due to their detrimental effect and the efforts invested in prevention measures directed against them. Chemical acaricides represent the main line of anti-tick defense in both humans and domestic animals, but increasing concerns regarding development of acaricide resistance, especially in the cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus, and environmental safety issues indicate the need for other, less aggressive but equally efficient methods. This paper aims to evaluate the potential, the scientific and economical limitatio

Host immunity to ticks.

The tick-host-pathogen interface is characterized by complex immunological interactions. Tick feeding induces host immune regulatory and effector pathways involving antibodies, complement, antigen-presenting cells, T lymphocytes, and other bioactive molecules. Acquired resistance impairs tick engorgement, ova production, and viability. Tick countermeasures to host defenses reduce T-lymphocyte proliferation, elaboration of the TH1 cytokines interleukin-2 and interferon-gamma, production of macrophage cytokines interleukin-1 and tumor necrosis factor, and antibody responses. The dynamic balance

Suitability of white-tailed deer as hosts for cattle fever ticks (Acari: Ixodidae).

White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus L.) were evaluated as an alternate host for the cattle fever tick, Boophilus annulatus (Say). The total of adult female ticks recovered and associated reproductive parameters were compared between deer and bovine hosts. Significantly fewer ticks were recovered from deer than from cattle; this was attributed to the grooming behavior of the deer. The mean weight of ticks taken from deer (243.5 mg) was significantly less than that of ticks recovered from cattle (344.5 mg) with about 15% of the ticks from deer prematurely detached. Egg mass weight from the

Exposure of dogs and cats to Borrelia miyamotoi infected Ixodes ricinus ticks in urban areas of the city of Poznań, west-central Poland.

Borrelia miyamotoi is an emerging human pathogen that causes a relapsing fever-like disease named B. miyamotoi disease. The bacterium belongs to the relapsing fever borreliae, and similar to spirochetes of the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato group, it is transmitted only by hard ticks of the Ixodes ricinus complex. To date, B. miyamotoi has not been demonstrated to cause illness in dogs or cats, and is poorly documented in veterinary medicine. The aim of this study was to determine the B. miyamotoi presence in (i) host-seeking ticks and (ii) engorged Ixodes sp. ticks collected from dogs and ca

Vaccination of cattle against the Boophilus microplus using a mucin-like membrane glycoprotein.

An antigen, BMA7, which induced partial immunity against tick infestation has been isolated from Boophilus microplus using two different protein fractionation protocols, accompanied by vaccination and parasite challenge trails. The antigen is a 63 kDa glycoprotein isolated from semi-engorged adult female ticks. Though significant, the induced immunity is less striking than that previously reported for antigen Bm86 from the same parasite. However, co-vaccination with Bm86 and BMA7 can enhance immunity over that seen with a commercial vaccine based on Bm86 alone. Limited peptide sequence informa

Evidence of common and genus-specific epitopes on Ornithodoros spp. Tick (Acari: Argasidae) salivary proteins.

New Zealand White rabbits were repeatedly infested with Ornithodoros turicata (Duges), Ornithodoros talaje (Guérin-Méneville), and Ornithodoros coriaceus (Koch) at 2-wk intervals. Blood samples were taken from each animal 10 d after each infestation and the titer of anti-tick antibody was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Subsequent cross-reactivity studies demonstrated that the antitick antisera nonspecifically bound to salivary gland extract proteins prepared from several other tick genera and species' Amblyomma maculatum (Koch), Dermacentor andersoni (Stiles), Dermacentor var

Research-led innovation for integrated tick management and acaricide resistance mitigation in livestock.

Ticks and tick-borne diseases represent a major threat to livestock health and productivity, particularly in (sub)tropical regions. Chemical acaricides remain the main control method, but repeated use has driven resistance and raised concerns about food safety, welfare, and environmental impact. Limited development of new ectoparasiticides has left farmers dependent on outdated options. Integrated tick management offers a sustainable approach by combining acaricides with biological controls, vaccines, resistant breeds, and improved husbandry. However, adoption is hindered by the availability,

[Possible role of ticks as a reservoir of rabies virus].

In Western Europe the fox and other carnivora are parasitized by two specific ticks. The study of host-parasite relationships and knowledge of rabies epidemiology led us to investigate for a possible part played by ticks as reservoir of rabies virus. Several hundreds of ticks (Pholeoixodes hexagonus and Pholeoixodes canisuga) were collected on wild foxes. Ticks collected from naturally infected rabid foxes were set on healthy foxes in order to contaminate them. Ticks collected from non-rabid foxes were set on healthy foxes in order to contaminate them. Ticks collected from non-rabid foxes were

A case of gynandromorphism in Hyalomma anatolicum (Ixodida: Ixodidae).

We present a field-collected Hyalomma anatolicum gynandromorph in Xinjiang, China. Compared to the normal H. anatolicum, the gynandromorphic tick was a typical bipartite protogynander: half of the tick body displayed normal female traits, whereas the other side showed normal male traits. The engorged gynandromorphic tick laid hundreds of eggs, and the eggs looked normal.
