Our brain constantly integrates signals across different senses. Auditory-visual synaesthesia is an unusual form of cross-modal integration in which sounds evoke involuntary visual experiences. Previous research primarily focuses on synaesthetic colour, but little is known about non-colour synaesthetic visual features. Here we studied a group of synaesthetes for whom sounds elicit consistent visual experiences of coloured 'geometric objects' located at specific spatial location. Changes in auditory pitch alter the brightness, size, and spatial height of synaesthetic experiences in a systematic

Psychophysical studies show alterations of cross-modal integration and timing processes in patients with generalized and focal hand dystonia. Here we assess the capability of 10 cervical dystonia patients, 5 patients with cervical pain but no dystonia, and 10 healthy controls to determine whether pairs of visual, tactile or visuo-tactile stimuli were simultaneous or sequential (TD threshold) and which stimulus preceded the other (temporal order judgement, TOJ). Visual stimuli consisted of light emitting diodes and tactile stimuli of non-noxious electrical shocks delivered to the hands. Interva

The present study investigated how the value of the long anchor duration influences the bisection point (BP) in the temporal bisection procedure. The ratio similarity rule (Gibbon, 1981, On the form and location of the psychometric bisection function for time. Journal of Mathematical Psychology, 24(1), 58-87) hypothesizes that the location of the BP is determined by a ratio comparison between the short and long anchor durations. The Short/no short hypothesis (Machado and Keen, 2003, Temporal discrimination in a long operant chamber. Behavioural Processes, 62(1), 157-182) indicates that the loc

Illness perceptions play an important role in outcomes for patients with advanced kidney failure receiving dialysis, though they are rarely examined over a sustained period and in distinct cultural settings. This observational cohort study used a prospective longitudinal design to examine how illness perceptions change overtime. It also considered whether these trajectories are related to patient experience of psychological and physical symptoms including those associated with dialysis, and depressive mood. Data were collected from 181 patients recruited from four dialysis centres in Northern

Developmental dyslexia is considered to be most effectively addressed with preventive phonics-based interventions, including grapheme-phoneme coupling and blending exercises. These intervention types require intact speech perception abilities, given their large focus on exercises with auditorily presented phonemes. Yet some children with (a risk for) dyslexia experience problems in this domain due to a poorer sensitivity to rise times, i.e., rhythmic acoustic cues present in the speech envelope. As a result, the often subtle speech perception problems could potentially constrain an optimal res

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate differences in vibration perception thresholds between adults with transtibial amputation and age-matched adults without amputation and to examine associations between vibration perception thresholds and balance performance. We hypothesized that adults with transtibial amputation would demonstrate lower thresholds compared with adults without amputation and that lower thresholds would be associated with better functional balance.
DESIGN: Prospective cross-sectional study.
SETTING: National conference, clinical practice, and university laboratory.
PARTICIPANTS: Adults

Vertical representation is central to posture control, as well as to spatial perception and navigation. This representation has been studied for a long time in patients with vestibular disorders and more recently in patients with hemispheric damage, in particular in those with right lesions causing spatial or postural deficits. The aim of the study was to determine the brain areas involved in the visual perception of the vertical. Sixteen right-handed healthy participants were evaluated using fMRI while they were judging the verticality of lines or, in a control task, the color of the same lin

Watching an ambiguous image leads to the bistability of its perception, that randomly oscillates between two possible interpretations. The relevant evolution of the neuron system is usually described with the equation of its "movement" over the nonuniform energy landscape under the action of the stochastic force, corresponding to noise perturbations. We utilize the alternative (and simpler) approach suggesting that the system is in the quasi-stationary state being described by the Arrhenius equation. The latter, in fact, determines the probability of the dynamical variation of the image being

Time-space synesthesia is a variant of sequence-space synesthesia and involves the involuntary association of months of the year with 2D and 3D spatial forms, such as arcs, circles, and ellipses. Previous studies have revealed conflicting results regarding the association between time-space synesthesia and enhanced spatial processing ability. Here, we tested 15 time-space synesthetes, and 15 non-synesthetic controls matched for age, education, and gender on standard tests of mental rotation ability, spatial working memory, and verbal working memory. Synesthetes performed better than controls o

This study examined the effect of short-term auditory pacing practice on dual motor task performance in children with and without dyslexia. Groups included dyslexic with Movement Assessment Battery for Children (MABC) scores > 15th percentile (D_HIGH, n = 18; mean age 9.89 +/- 2.0 years), dyslexic with MABC < or = 15th percentile (D_LOW, n = 15; mean age 10.43 +/- 1.8 years), and typically developing (TD, n = 18; mean age 10.64 +/- 1.8 years). Participants clapped and walked simultaneously for 3 pretest trials, completed 16 trials with auditory pacing, and 3 posttest trials without pacing. D_L

Haptic-based tissue stiffness perception is essential for palpation training system, which can provide the surgeon haptic cues for improving the diagnostic abilities. However, current haptic devices, such as Geomagic Touch, fail to provide immersive and natural haptic interaction in virtual surgery due to the inherent mechanical friction, inertia, limited workspace and flawed haptic feedback. To tackle this issue, we design a novel magnetic levitation haptic device based on electromagnetic principles to augment the tissue stiffness perception in virtual environment. Users can naturally interac

Whenever groups form, members readily and intuitively judge each other's agentic characteristics (e.g., self-confidence or assertiveness). We tested the hypothesis that perceiving others as low in these characteristics triggers agentic interpersonal behavior among perceivers, which benefits their own reputation in terms of agency. We analyzed data from a longitudinal field study (Study 1, n = 109), a multiwave laboratory study (Study 2, n = 311), and a preregistered experimental laboratory study (Study 3, n = 206). In Study 1, low other-perceptions of agency predicted agentic reputations at ze

Visual shape and motion information, processed in distinct brain regions, should be combined to elicit a unitary coherent percept of an object in motion. In an fMRI study, we identified brain regions underlying the perceptual binding of motion and shape independently of the features-contrast, motion, and shape-used to design the moving displays. These displays alternately elicited a bound (moving diamond) or an unbound (disconnected moving segments) percept, and were either physically unchanging yet perceptually bistable or physically changing over time. The joint analysis of the blood-oxygen-

The rapid advancement of embodied intelligent robots demands accurate perception and integration of diverse environmental cues. However, current multimodal sensing systems are hindered by complex architectures and heterogeneous integration, which compromise rapid fabrication, seamless deployment, robustness, and multi-source signal perception. Here, we address this challenge through an elegant substrate-folding design strategy that enables bimodal sensing within a single monolithic laser-induced graphene (LIG) film, drastically simplifying device architecture and fabrication while paving the w

Lifestyle modifications (i.e., nutrition and physical activity) remain the main tools in the context of childhood obesity's treatment and prevention of short and long-term consequences. At the same time, parental perception of child weight represents an even more important tool. It is known that more than half of parents of overweight/obese children underestimate their child's weight status or are not worried about the risks associated with childhood overweight/obesity. Consequently, parental perception of childhood obesity can often be erroneous, and, even when accurate, subsequent parental b

Hearing aids show more benefit in traditional laboratory speech-in-noise tests than in real-world noisy environments. Real-world noise comprises a large range of acoustic properties that vary randomly and rapidly between and within environments, making quantifying real-world noise and using it in experiments and clinical tests challenging. One approach is to use acoustic features and statistics to quantify acoustic properties of real-world noise and control for them or measure their relationship to listening performance. In this study, the complexity of real-world noise from different environm

BACKGROUND: We used data from a prospective cohort to explore 2-year trajectories of 'long COVID' (persistent symptoms after SARS-CoV-2 infection) and their association with illness perception.
METHODS: RECoVERED participants (adults; prospectively enrolled following laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection, May 2020-June 2021) completed symptom questionnaires at months 2-12, 18 and 24, and the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (B-IPQ) at months 1, 6 and 12. Using group-based trajectory models (GBTM), we modelled symptoms (mean total numbers and proportion with four specific complaints)

Although we have the impression that visual information flows continuously from our sensory channels, recent studies indicate that this is likely not the case. Rather, we sample visual stimuli rhythmically, oscillating at 5-10 Hz. Electroencephalography (EEG) studies have demonstrated that this rhythmicity is reflected by the phase of ongoing brain oscillations in the same frequency. Theoretically, brain oscillations could underlie the rhythmic nature of perception by providing transient time windows for information exchange, but this question has not yet been systematically addressed. We reco

Brain processes underlying visual segmentation have been widely studied, being part of the basic processes underlying perception. However, the underlying constraints on perceptual thresholds, set by neuronal processing, remain unclear. Here, the relationship between human visual performance and brain activity was examined using the backward-masked texture segmentation task. Performance showed dependence on the time-interval between target and mask as well as on the amount of prior practice. Correspondingly, early components of human event-related potentials (ERPs) recorded over occipital elect
