BACKGROUND: Dermatophytes are common and cause important human fungal infections in many parts of the world, including Lebanon. The prevalen … tribution of infection according to body sites was : tinea unguium (44.2%), tinea corporis (43.2%), tinea capitis (7.7%) and tinea pedis (4.8%). Compared to the previous study from AUBMC in 1962, the current study showed an overall lower prevalence of dermatophytoses (12.7 vs 18.5%, p = 0.001) and variations in the prevalence rates of the dermatophyte species i …

When evaluating pediatric patients of color, it is essential to consider the unique diagnostic and treatment factors that apply to this population. Certain dermatologic conditions are more common in these patients, including postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, pityriasis alba, progressive macular hypomelanosis, tinea capitis, traction alopecia, keloids, hypertrophic scars, pseudofolliculitis barbae, acne keloidalis nuchae, and hidradenitis suppurativa. Furthermore, conditions such as vitiligo are more noticeable in people of color. This can lead to a significantly diminished quality of life, s…

The pathogenesis of meningiomas is not established [1,2]. However, intracranial irradiation in childhood is a risk factor for the development of meningiomas later in life [2-6]. Children treated with irradiation for tinea capitis of the scalp showed an almost ten-fold increase in development of meningiomas relative to age-matched controls [2,3]. In a study of almost 18,000 children who survived for at least five years after receiving external beam radiation, 2.3% developed meningiomas within 17 years of follow-up [5]. Notably, meningioma formation after radiation therapy (RT) occurs almost exc…

Tumors of the thyroid and parathyroid glands may develop together or separately in patients who previously have been exposed to head and neck irradiation. Whether cranial irradiation confers an increased risk for pituitary adenoma remains unknown. We report the case of a 52-year-old woman who was treated during childhood for tinea capitis with scalp irradiation and later in life developed a prolactin-secreting tumor, a parathyroid adenoma, a benign thyroid lesion, and a basal cell carcinoma of the skin. She was treated successfully with bromocriptine and surgical removal of the parathyroid ade…

INTRODUCTION: Superficial mycosis is one of the most common diseases worldwide, however its epidemiology is changing over time.
AIM: To pre … s the most common pathogen. However, in a longer period of observation, a decrease in the number of tinea capitis cases and an increase in infections caused by T. tonsurans were noticed. Observed changes indicate the need for continuing studies to detect the upcoming epidemiological trends.

Superficial fungal diseases that affect the skin and its appendages are frequently seen in basic triage and in dermatology services. These d … revalence was 30.9%. The most frequent were dermatophytosis (44.7%). M. canis produced 148 cases of tinea capitis. Three dermatophytic agents represented 95% of all cases, with a significant predominance of T. mentagrophytes with 50%. Candidosis occurred in 28.4%. C. albicans, and the C. parapsilosis complex, were responsible for 80% of the cases. The other spe …

Superficial cutaneous fungal infections (SCFIs) are commonly encountered in clinical practice in the United States, and comprise infections of the skin by dermatophytes and yeasts. The most common organisms causing SCFI are dermatophytes, especially Trichophyton spp. With the exception of onchomycosis and tinea capitis, most cases of SCFIs are amenable to properly selected topical antifungal therapy used over an adequate period of time.

A variety of topical antifungal agents are available for the treatment of SCFIs, and they encompass a few major chemical classes: the polyenes (ie, nys…

Trichophyton tonsurans has been reported to be the causative agent of an epidemic of tinea corporis and tinea capitis among Japanese judoists and wrestlers. A molecular method using restriction enzyme analysis of PCR-amplified fragments targeting the non-transcribed spacer (NTS) region of ribosomal RNA genes in fungal nuclei was applied to a total of 232 strains of T. tonsurans isolated in Japan. Six molecular types, i.e., NTS types I, II, III, IV, V, and VI, were clearly detected in restriction analysis of fragments digested with MvaI and AvaI together. Of the 232 strains, 199 were classified…

The increase of dermathophytosis in patients with poor therapeutic response leads us to study the antifungal susceptibility of 36 clinical isolates to itraconazole, ketoconazole and fluconazole by the E-test method. According to established parameters by the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute, the resistance to one or more antifungal drugs was demonstrated in seven isolates (19.4%) as follows: three Trichophyton rubrum, three T. mentagrophytes and one T. tonsurans. A T. rubrum isolate was resistant to the three azolic drugs; the other six only to fluconazole. It is important to establish

Syphilitic alopecia (SA) is considered an uncommon manifestation of secondary syphilis. SA can present in a diffuse form, resembling telogen effluvium, or in a moth-eaten form that mimics a variety of conditions (i.e., alopecia areata, trichotillomania, lichen planus pilaris or tinea capitis). When the two forms coexist, we observe a mixed pattern. Essential SA manifests without evidence of mucocutaneous syphilis manifestations and its diagnosis is often delayed. To date, trichoscopic description of SA forms are based on very few cases (i.e., five patients with moth-eaten SA and one with diffu…

Dermatophytosis is currently a disease of global importance and a public health burden. It is caused by dermatophytes, which attack and grow … ascar (M. langeronii, reclassified as M. audouinii), Uganda (M. gypseum) and Malawi (M. audouinii). Tinea capitis was the most clinical type, followed by tinea corporis. Etiological agents of animal dermatophytoses were variable in the countries where they were reported. Major risk factors for dermatophytoses are age, climatic, and socioeconomic factors.
