PATIENT AND METHOD: A 55-year-old immuno-depressed female underwent resection of the lower third of the face subsequent to extensive mucormycosis-related necrosis. Reconstruction of the anterior part of the mandible and adjacent soft tissue was carried out with a mandibular prosthesis and a latissimus dorsi flap. BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to describe a new stapes prosthesis with memory characteristics for wire crimping (SMart-Piston).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This technique was used in 15 patients (mean age 43.4 years; range 28-71) undergoing routine stapes surgery. Varying results and a high rate of subsidence have been reported for the straight femoral stem (M.E. Muller) made of titanium alloy. We examined subsidence in 135 titanium-alloy straight stems implanted with high viscosity cement after 68.8+/-11.5 months using a digital high-precision method (EBRA-FCA). One revised implant showed a subsidence of 14.6 mm and another 2.5 mm over 5 years. A third implant without migration was found to be loose. We report our experience of a low-profile mini-plating system in the treatment of fractures of the hand in 57 consecutive patients (five children and 52 adults). Thirteen procedures were performed electively, and 44 procedures were performed on an emergency basis. The acid resistance of TiF4-treated enamel was investigated to establish a possible treatment modality for endogenous dental erosion. Enamel slabs were prepared from human molars and treated with solutions of TiF4. Double-stem silicone implants protected by titanium grommets were placed in the hallux metatarsophalangeal joints of 32 patients (47 feet). All patients had a painful destroyed joint and most were women. Three patients (six feet) were lost to follow-up. In an experimental clinical study, 25 implants of pure titanium were inserted into the proximal tibia of 11 volunteer patients, four with rheumatoid arthritis and seven with osteoarthritis. The implants were removed from five weeks to 24 months later and detailed histological analysis was performed. The implants generally healed with direct bone-metal contact, showing so-called osseointegration. Using a titanium alloy femoral prosthesis (STH Zimmer) and an ultra high molecular weight polyethylene acetabular cup with a posterior surgical approach to the hip joint, 237 consecutive total hip arthroplasties in 215 patients were performed between December 1975 and May 1977. The preliminary results and early postoperative complications suggest that this system can be considered an alternative to total hip arthroplasty using other materials and surgical approaches.
