OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of radiographic position of palatally impacted canines on the length of treatment for orthodontic alignment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Treatment records of 45 consecutive successfully treated patients (36 unilateral, 9 bilateral) with ectopic palatal canines treated with surgical exposure and orthodontic traction were analyzed. The sample was based on orthodontic referrals over a 3-year period in Kent and Canterbury Hospital, UK. The duration of treatment was related to radiographic parameters including the height of the impacted canine, angulation of the

Accurate three-dimensional (3D) age estimation relies on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) image quality. This study investigated the effect of voxel size on age estimation using 3D surface area analysis (3D SAA) of developing tooth apices from different CBCT systems. CBCT scans of 128 developing maxillary second premolars from children aged 7-14 years of Malay and Chinese ethnicities were retrospectively collected using a voxel size of 76 μm. The surface area of the developing apex was measured using the 3D SAA method. A previously developed regression formula, based on 300 μm voxel size d

BACKGROUND: Intraoral radiographs can aid in formulating a more accurate diagnosis of periodontal disease. However, it must be considered whether a comparable amount of information can be obtained with modern panoramic radiographs. The aim of this study was to determine to what degree the diagnosable amount of bone loss in patients with aggressive periodontitis or severe chronic periodontitis depends on the type of x-ray technique used.
METHODS: A total of 110 subjects (63 females) were included in this study. The inclusion criteria were the diagnosis of aggressive periodontitis (N = 49) or s

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of nitric oxide (NO) in orthodontic tooth movement in rats. Nomega-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) was used as NO synthase (NOS) inhibitor, and nitro-L-arginine (NLA) was used as NOS precursor. Fifty-four Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 3 equal groups, and each group was divided into 3 subgroups. In the first 8 subgroups, 20 g of force was applied to the maxillary incisors with a spring. NLA was administered in the first 3 subgroups at 10(-4), 10(-5) and 10(-6) mol/L (20 microL/12 hours), respectively. L-NAME was administered in t

Background/Objective: Maxillary canine impaction is a frequent orthodontic challenge. Three-dimensional CBCT assessment allows precise evaluation of periradicular bone density, which may play a role in eruption failure. This study aimed to compare bone density (HU) around impacted canines with that of the contralateral erupted tooth and to assess correlations with age and sex. Methods: A total of 26 patients (10 males, 16 females; 13-19 years) with unilateral maxillary canine impaction were examined. Pre-treatment CBCT scans acquired were analyzed. Bone density was measured in HU at three root

A 60-year-old woman presented with the chief complaint of mobility of tooth #16. Gingival swelling and calculus were observed. Clinical examination revealed that 49.4% of sites had a probing depth (PD) of ≥4 mm and 72% of sites bleeding on probing. Radiographic examination revealed vertical bone resorption in #35 and horizontal resorption in other regions. Periapical region radiolucency on #16 and 27 suggested a perio-endo lesion. The clinical diagnosis was severe chronic periodontitis. Initial periodontal therapy mainly comprised the following: oral hygiene instruction; quadrant scaling and r

The present study was undertaken to determine the ability of alcohol desiccation to improve the apical seal by removing residual moisture from the canal. From the results of this study, isopropyl alcohol did not improve the sealability of either Roth's 801 sealer or AH26 sealer. Thus, the employment of this technique should be questioned on the basis of the potential source of irritation of the alcohol and the addition of an extraneous procedural step.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical research regarding the clinical and histopathologic characteristics of cemental tear is limited in the endodontic literature. The objective of this study was to evaluate the morphology, apicocoronal location, and the histologic characteristics of cemental tear.
METHODS: The material was collected during 1987-2009 and consisted of 54 teeth that were presented with cemental tears by histologic examination. To investigate the atypical prospects among the groups of each variable, a series of the Poisson χ(2) goodness-of-fit tests were conducted to test for a fit of a discre

INTRODUCTION: Surgical interventions such as tooth extraction increase the chances of developing osteonecrosis of the jaw in patients receiving bisphosphonates (BPs) for the treatment of bone-related diseases. Tooth extraction is often performed to eliminate preexisting pathological inflammatory conditions that make the tooth unsalvageable; however, the role of such conditions on bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) development after tooth extraction is not clearly defined. Here, we examined the effects of periapical periodontitis on tooth extraction-induced BRONJ developmen

INTRODUCTION: The proximity of the inferior alveolar canal to the mandibular molar roots may pose a risk of injury during various dental surgeries. The purpose of this study was to evaluate age-related and gender-related changes by using cone-beam computed tomography images between the roots of the second molars, mandibular cortex, and the inferior alveolar canal.
METHODS: One hundred fifty-five patients (68 men, 87 women), 20 years and older, who had previous cone-beam computed tomography scans were enrolled in this study. The patients were subcategorized by gender and age (group I, <21 year

BACKGROUND: Orthodontically induced external apical root resorption is a common iatrogenic effect of tooth movement. With the increasing use of clear aligner therapy, it is important to evaluate whether its biomechanics reduce root resorption compared with fixed orthodontic appliances.
AIM: To compare apical root resorption in patients treated with clear aligners and fixed appliances using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).
METHODOLOGY: A retrospective comparative CBCT-based analysis was conducted on 120 orthodontic patients. Root volumes and lengths were measured from the cementoenamel j

Here, we report periodontal treatment including regenerative therapy in a patient with generalized chronic periodontitis. The patient was a 53-year-old woman who presented with the chief complaint of gingival swelling and tooth mobility in the right maxillary molar region. An initial examination revealed 36% of sites with a probing depth of ≥4 mm and 15.5% with bleeding on probing. Radiographic examination revealed vertical bone resorption in #15, 24, 27, 34, 37, 45, and 47. Horizontal resorption was noted in other regions. The clinical diagnosis was moderate chronic periodontitis. Initial per

PURPOSE: The location of the gingival zenith in a medial-lateral position relative to the vertical tooth axis of the maxillary anterior teeth remains to be clearly defined. In addition, the apex of the free gingival margin of the lateral incisor teeth relative to the gingival zeniths of the adjacent proximal teeth remains undetermined. Therefore, this investigation evaluated two clinical parameters: (1) the gingival zenith position (GZP) from the vertical bisected midline (VBM) along the long axis of each individual maxillary anterior tooth; and (2) the gingival zenith level (GZL) of the later

INTRODUCTION: An anterior open bite is a form of vertical discrepancy that presents as a lack of contact between maxillary and mandibular segments. The treatment modalities usually involve either intrusion of posterior teeth or extrusion of anterior or a combination of both. The anatomical relationship between the apex of the maxillary molar roots to the inferior wall of the maxillary sinus floor is crucial in planning posterior intrusion. The paranasal sinuses influence the growth of the facial structures that eventually get altered in various malocclusions. Studies have proven that the heigh

BACKGROUND: Loading of the compromised periodontium with orthodontic forces produces different results than those achieved in patients with healthy periodontal support. Determining the force value at a level preventing further deterioration of the patient's periodontal status, thus delivering the most precisely individualized "dose" of loading, seems to be crucial for the successful intrusion of teeth with reduced periodontal support.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to determine the range of force values efficiently intruding maxillary incisors without further compromising the initially-

BACKGROUND: It is common to see patients who need orthodontic treatment but with insufficient alveolar bone volume. However, safe and effective tooth movement requires sufficient alveolar bone width and height. The aim of this study is to compare the bone augmentation efficacy of Autologous Partially Demineralized Dentin Matrix (APDDM) and Deproteinized Bovine Bone Mineral (DBBM) in orthodontic patients with insufficient bone by using a randomized controlled clinical trial approach.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-seven orthodontic patients involving 40 posterior teeth alveolar sites (n = 40) w

Trauma in immature teeth can lead to open apices, posing challenges for treatment. Calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2), the traditional option, has limitations such as lengthy treatment times and risks of fracture. Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) has emerged as a superior alternative, offering excellent sealing and biocompatibility. This paper describes managing an immature central incisor in a 19-year-old male with necrotic pulp using an MTA apical plug, with a 24-month follow-up. The presented case outlines the difficulties encountered in treating an immature tooth with an acute apical abscess due

INTRODUCTION: Regional odontodysplasia (ROD) is a rare developmental disorder characterized by hypo-mineralization and hypoplasia of enamel and dentin. Symptoms include poorly developed tooth buds, delayed eruption of permanent teeth in affected quadrants, and ghost teeth. The affected teeth often become necrotic due to abnormal enamel and dentin development, making them susceptible to caries and infection. The aim of this case report is to describe the treatment of ROD through pulp revascularization.
CASE REPORT: A 13-year-old girl was referred for endodontic treatment. The mandibular left i
