Pre-extraction Embolization of Jaw Arteriovenous Malformations to Reduce Bleeding during Tooth Extraction.

This retrospective observational study evaluated the effects of pre-extraction embolization on intraoperative blood loss (IBL) during tooth extraction in patients with jaw arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). Five patients (8 procedures) underwent transarterial embolization (TAE), with or without direct puncture embolization (DPE). Technical success, IBL, clinical success-defined as absence of bleeding requiring transfusion during tooth extraction-and adverse events were assessed. TAE was performed in all procedures. DPE was additionally performed in 5 procedures when dilated venous cavities we

3D bio-printing of photocrosslinked anatomically tooth-shaped scaffolds for alveolar ridge preservation after tooth extraction.

Alveolar ridge preservation techniques have been developed as a possible method to maintain the optimum ridge contour and dimensions. Grafting a bone substitute is paramount to prevent alveolar ridge resorption after tooth extraction. However, it remains a great challenge to develop alveolar ridge preservation materials with sufficient mechanical strength, bioactivity, and osteoinductivity and favorable tooth extraction socket morphological matching. In this work, a novel photocrosslinked composite ink consisting of nacre, polyurethane (PU) and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) was p

Differentiating spontaneous vertical root fracture in endodontically treated tooth.

Although vertical root fracture (VRF) is mostly found in endodontically treated teeth, it also occurs spontaneously. If VRF is recognized after endodontic treatment, it is considered to be iatrogenic and can lead to legal trouble. However, legal problems can be averted if the dentist can prove that the VRF existed before endodontic treatment. This case report describes an unusual, spontaneous VRF in an endodontically treated tooth and presents a useful tip for determining whether a fracture is iatrogenic. We performed nonsurgical endodontic treatment on a mandibular first molar with irreversib

Ultrastructural analysis of structural framework in dental plaque developing on synthetic carbonate apatite applied to human tooth surfaces.

This study focused on determining the structural framework by oral microbiota in supragingival plaque on a carbonate apatite film applied to human tooth surfaces. The sequential phases of plaque formation over a 3-wk period were found to be equivalent to those previously reported for natural tooth surfaces. Scanning electron microscopy of specimens prepared by vertical sectioning demonstrated the organization of two types of framework between certain genera of initial and secondary colonizers in the pre- and post-organization phases, respectively. The initial colonizers in the pre-organization

Changes in the vascular network of the oral epithelium and reduced enamel epithelium during tooth eruption.

The purpose of this study was to examine the vascular network beneath the reduced enamel epithelium (REE) and oral epithelium (OE) during tooth eruption. Using the corrosive-resin casting method, vascular resin casts were prepared from premolar and molar teeth of the dog and examined by scanning electron microscopy. The vascular network beneath the REE is arranged in two layers, an inner layer consisting of a dense capillary network and an outer layer composed primarily of arterioles and venules. Throughout tooth eruption, the configuration of the vessels of the inner layer is continually chan

Virtual Surgery Planning and Three-Dimensional Printing Template to Customize Bone Graft Toward Implant Insertion.

Premaxillary tooth loss and bone deficiency or atrophy often occur in facial trauma. Onlay bone graft and implants have so far been the best means of restoring function and esthetic appearance. Void space between the graft and the jaw bone, over projection and mucosal trauma can cause mucosal dehiscence, bone exposure, or resorption and can compromise implant survival. Virtual surgical planning using 3-dimensional printing technology has improved the efficiency of craniofacial surgery. The drawbacks of this technology are its cost and time-consuming preparation. However, the democratization of
