Correlation Between Soft Tissue Injury and the Type of Nasal Fracture Based on Stranc-Robertson Classification.

Nasal fractures are the most common facial bone fractures, and soft tissue injuries are frequently accompanied. This study intends to make a deep analysis on the relationship between the 2.Patients diagnosed with nasal fracture between 2015 and 2017 were included. Patients younger than 17 years and those with previous facial fractures or aesthetic surgeries were excluded. Nasal fractures were classified according to the Stranc-Robertson (S-R) classification, and the severity of soft tissue injury was evaluated by length and depth. The authors compared the frequency of soft tissue injury betwee

Deep learning algorithms for detection of critical findings in head CT scans: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Non-contrast head CT scan is the current standard for initial imaging of patients with head trauma or stroke symptoms. We aimed to develop and validate a set of deep learning algorithms for automated detection of the following key findings from these scans: intracranial haemorrhage and its types (ie, intraparenchymal, intraventricular, subdural, extradural, and subarachnoid); calvarial fractures; midline shift; and mass effect. METHODS: We retrospectively collected a dataset containing 313 318 head CT scans together with their clinical reports from around 20 centres in India betwe

[Advances in the research of pressure therapy for pediatric burn patients with facial scar].

Facial scar and deformation caused by burn injury severely affect physical and psychological well-being of pediatric burn patients, which needs medical workers and pediatric burn patients' family members to pay much attention to and to perform early rehabilitation treatment. Pressure therapy is an important rehabilitative strategy for pediatric burn patients with facial scar, mainly including wearing headgears and transparent pressure facemasks, which have their own features. To achieve better treatment results, pressure therapy should be chosen according to specific condition of pediatric bur

What is the role of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography in assessing traumatic rupture of the pancreatic in children?

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Trauma is one of the most common causes of morbidity and mortality in the pediatric population. The diagnosis of pancreatic injury is based on clinical presentation, laboratory and imaging findings, and endoscopic methods. CT scanning is considered the gold standard for diagnosing pancreatic trauma in children. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective study evaluates data from 25 pediatric patients admitted to the University Hospital Motol, Prague, with blunt pancreatic trauma between January 1999 and June 2013. RESULTS: The exact grade of injury was determined by

Difference in rural and urban driver-injury severities in highway-rail grade crossing accidents.

Based on the Federal Railway Administration (FRA) database, there were 25,945 highway-rail crossing accidents in the United States between 2002 and 2011. With an extensive research, analysis results showed that there were substantial differences between rural and urban areas at highway-rail grade crossings. However, there is no published study specific on driver's injury severity at highway-rail grade crossings classified by area types. Using an ordered probit modelling approach, the study explores the determinants of driver-injury severity at rural highway-rail grade crossings compared with u

Development of a time sensitivity score for frequently occurring motor vehicle crash injuries.

BACKGROUND: Injury severity alone is a poor indicator of the time sensitivity of injuries. The purpose of the study was to quantify the urgency with which the most frequent motor vehicle crash injuries require treatment, according to expert physicians. STUDY DESIGN: The time sensitivity was quantified for the top 95% most frequently occurring Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) 2+ injuries in the National Automotive Sampling System-Crashworthiness Data System (NASS-CDS) 2000-2011. A Time Sensitivity Score was developed using expert physician survey data in which physicians were asked to determine

Dual-task training for balance and mobility in a person with severe traumatic brain injury: a case study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Attentional impairments following severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) are common and can lead to decreased functional mobility and balance, as well as deficits in previously automatic movements such as walking and stair climbing. The purpose of this case study was to determine the feasibility and potential value of incorporating a cognitive-motor dual-task training program into physical therapy for a patient with a severe TBI. CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient was a 26-year-old woman who sustained a severe TBI during a motor vehicle accident 46 days prior to physical thera

How often does detrusor overactivity cause urinary leakage during a stress test in women with mixed urinary incontinence?

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The study examined how often detrusor overactivity (DO) causes leakage during a stress test in women with mixed urinary incontinence (MUI) and whether there are differences between those who do and those who do not have DO during the stress test. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed in 100 women who had an ambulatory urodynamic recording done where bladder, urethral, and vaginal pressures, and leakage were recorded. The stress test consisted of 20 jumping jacks and three forceful coughs. RESULTS: All the women leaked during the stress test: five due to si

Oswestry Disability Index is a better indicator of lumbar motion than the Visual Analogue Scale.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Lumbar pathology is often associated with axial pain or neurologic complaints. It is often presumed that such pain is associated with decreased lumbar motion; however, this correlation is not well established. The utility of various outcome measures that are used in both research and clinical practice have been studied, but the connection with range of motion (ROM) has not been well documented. PURPOSE: The current study was performed to assess objectively the postulated correlation of lumbar complaints (based on standardized outcome measures) with extremes of lumbar ROM a

Severe traumatic brain injury and controlled hemorrhage in rats: quest for the optimal mean arterial blood pressure after whole fresh donor blood resuscitation.

Treatment of combined traumatic brain injury and hypovolemic shock poses a particular challenge due to the possible conflicting consequences. While restoring diminished volume is the treatment goal for hypovolemia, maintaining and adequate cerebral perfusion pressure and avoidance of secondary damage remain a treatment goal for the injured brain. Various treatment modalities have been proposed, but the optimal resuscitation fluid and goals have not yet been clearly defined. In this study, we investigate the physiological and neurological outcomes in a rat model of combined traumatic brain inju

Shotgun injury to the arm: a staged protocol for upper limb salvage.

Low-energy shotgun fractures involving the arm are complex injuries. Previously published reports have emphasized various problems associated with these injuries. This case report describes a low-energy shotgun wound managed by a staged treatment protocol involving: (1) a spanning external fixator and immediate soft tissue management, followed by (2) osteosynthesis and autogenous bone grafting and (3) epineural suturing of injured radial nerve, with a successful outcome. Although adequate debridement of the fracture and soft tissue wound is the key to open fracture management, some difference

Intracranial bleeding in patients with traumatic brain injury: a prognostic study.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial bleeding (IB) is a common and serious consequence of traumatic brain injury (TBI). IB can be classified according to the location into: epidural haemorrhage (EDH) subdural haemorrhage (SDH) intraparenchymal haemorrhage (IPH) and subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH). Studies involving repeated CT scanning of TBI patients have found that IB can develop or expand in the 48 hours after injury. If IB enlarges after hospital admission and larger bleeds have a worse prognosis, this would provide a therapeutic rationale for treatments to prevent increase in the extent of bleeding. W
