Helminths of the black-headed gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) from breeding colonies in north-central Poland.

Among parasites of the digestive tract of the black-headed gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) in Poland, the best known are species of digenetic trematodes and cestodes. Nematodes of this bird species are not well known. Black-headed gulls, due to their varied diet, migration, life in a flock, and changes of habitat, can become infected with various species of helminths, and like synanthropic birds, they can spread the dispersal stages of parasites across urban and recreational areas. In the present study, an attempt was made to identify the helminth fauna of C. ridibundus from breeding colonie

Profiling the glycome of Cardicola forsteri, a blood fluke parasitic to bluefin tuna.

Infections by blood flukes (Cardicola spp.) are considered the most significant health issue for ranched bluefin tuna, a major aquaculture industry in Japan and Australia. The host-parasite interfaces of trematodes, namely their teguments, are particularly rich in carbohydrates, which function both in evasion and modulation of the host immune system, while some are primary antigenic targets. In this study, histochemistry and mass spectrometry techniques were used to profile the glycans of Cardicola forsteri. Fluorescent lectin staining of adult flukes indicates the presence of oligomannose (Co

Influence of an extreme climatic event on bilateral asymmetry and occurrence of eye flukes in perch (Perca fluviatilis) and roach (Rutilus rutilus) from a lake in southeast England.

Eye flukes are common infections of freshwater fish and their occurrence as metacercarial stages may occur non-randomly resulting in an asymmetrical distribution within the host eyes. However, from previous studies the presentation of bias by these trematodes lacks consistency suggesting that congenital asymmetrical effects are unlikely to be the cause and exogenous factors, such as environmental stress, may be more influential. The present study, undertaken over a 4-year period, investigates the impact of an extreme heatwave and drought on the annual bilateral asymmetry and occurrence of two

Chronobiology of trematode cercarial emergence: from data recovery to epidemiological, ecological and evolutionary implications.

One major challenge for parasites with complex cycles consists to succeed in the transmission from one host to the next host. To maximize the probability of encountering the right host, numerous trematode species have selected various emergence rhythms occurring during the escape of the short-lived cercariae from the mollusc host. Cercarial shedding patterns are beautiful examples of adaptation of the parasite for a successful rendezvous with its subsequent host. In this review, after an analysis of the technical and statistical aspects specific to such studies, we compile the knowledge and un

Spatiotemporal distributions of intestinal helminths in female lesser scaup Aythya affinis during spring migration from the upper Midwest, USA.

We examined the associations between intestinal helminth infracommunity structure and infection parameters and the age, size, and year and region of collection of 130 female lesser scaup (Aythya affinis) during their 2014-2015 spring migrations through the upper Midwest, USA. We identified a total of 647,174 individual helminths from 40 taxa, including 20 trematodes, 14 cestodes, 4 nematodes and 2 acanthocephalans parasitizing lesser scaup within the study area. Lesser scaup were each infected with 2-23 helminth taxa. One digenean, Plenosoma minimum, is reported for the first time in lesser sc

The influence of geographical location, host maturity and sex on intestinal helminth communities of the double-crested cormorant Phalacrocorax auritus from the eastern United States.

Here the intestinal helminth infracommunities of 218 double-crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) from 11 locations in Alabama, Minnesota, Mississippi and Vermont are documented. Trematode infections were present in 98% of hosts; 65% of cormorants carried cestode infections, 4% were infected with acanthocephalans and 66% had nematode intestinal parasites. Parasite infracommunities of hosts collected on wintering grounds had higher richness and diversity than did birds collected on breeding grounds. Differences in parasite richness and diversity between male and female P. auritus were also…

STAT6 expression and IL-13 production in association with goblet cell hyperplasia and worm expulsion of Gymnophalloides seoi from C57BL/6 mice.

In intestinal helminth infections, Th2 immune respones are generally associated with mucin secretion for worm expulsion from the host intestine. In particular, IL-4 and IL-13 are the important cytokines related with intestinal mucus production via STAT6 signalling in nematode infections. However, this perspective has never been studied in Gymnophalloides seoi infection. The present study aimed to observe the STAT6 signalling and cytokine responses in C57BL/6 mice, a mouse strain resistant to infection with this trematode. The results showed that worm expulsion occurred actively during days 1-2

Effects of Schistosoma mansoni worms and eggs on circulating cholesterol and liver lipids in mice.

It has previously been shown that experimental infections of the parasitic trematode Schistosoma mansoni, the adult worms of which reside in the blood stream of the mammalian host, significantly reduced atherogenesis in apolipoprotein E gene knockout (apoE(-/-)) mice. These effects occurred in tandem with a lowering of serum total cholesterol levels in both apoE(-/-) and random-bred laboratory mice and a beneficial increase in the proportion of HDL to LDL cholesterol. To better understand how the parasitic infections induce these effects we have here investigated the involvement of adult worms

Antibody response to Schistosoma mansoni adult worm cysteine proteinases in infected individuals.

Antigens of the Schistosoma mansoni digestive tract are recognized early in the infective process. Two immunogenic components of the excretory/secretory products are proteolytic enzymes that degrade host hemoglobin in the lumen of the parasite gut. These enzymes, CP1 and CP2, belong to the class of cysteine proteinases. In this study, a preparation containing both proteinases has been used to detect proteinase antibodies in the sera of individuals living in Burundi. Of 133 individuals tested, 92% were excreting schistosome eggs. All patients with documented infections had positive anti-protein

Disease's hidden death toll: Using parasite aggregation patterns to quantify landscape-level host mortality in a wildlife system.

World-wide, infectious diseases represent a major source of mortality in humans and livestock. For wildlife populations, disease-induced mortality is likely even greater, but remains notoriously difficult to estimate-especially for endemic infections. Approaches for quantifying wildlife mortality due to endemic infections have historically been limited by an inability to directly observe wildlife mortality in nature. Here we address a question that can rarely be answered for endemic pathogens of wildlife: what are the population- and landscape-level effects of infection on host mortality? We c

Protecting valuable stock: Non-lethal sampling approaches for Cardicola spp. monitoring in ranched Southern bluefin tuna.

Reliance on lethal sampling to monitor Cardicola spp. infections in ranched Southern bluefin tuna (Thunnus maccoyii, SBT) constrains investigative time points and number of fish available for sampling, restricting health monitoring to commercial harvest periods. For these reasons six non-lethal sampling strategies from three biologically relevant sites in SBT were evaluated for their ability to detect Cardicola spp. infection severity relative to lethally collected gill necropsies, which are currently considered the diagnostic gold standard. From harvested SBT, gill biopsies demonstrated the h

Beyond morphology: cryptic diversity in 9 new Gyrodactylus species (Monogenea: Gyrodactylidae) associated with northwest African barbels (Cyprinidae) and remarks on Gyrodactylus nyingiae Shigoley, Rahmouni, Louizi, Pariselle and Vanhove, 2023.

Cryptic diversity, characterized by morphologically similar but genetically distinct species, poses significant challenges to traditional taxonomic methods. Within monogeneans parasitizing northwest African barbels, this complexity hampers species identification, limiting our understanding of diversity, distribution and evolutionary relationships. Supported by previously published genetic data, we morphologically delineate herein 9 Gyrodactylus species from Morocco. Newly described species include G. agnesei sp. nov. and G. benhoussai sp. nov. from Luciobarbus rabatensis, with the latter also

Naringenin as a Promising Therapeutic Agent for Gyrodactylus kobayashii in Goldfish.

Gyrodactylus spp. pose significant threats to farmed fish due to their high pathogenicity, resulting in substantial economic losses in aquaculture. Currently, treatments for gyrodactylosis primarily rely on chemical agents, the efficacy and safety of which are not always satisfactory, underscoring the urgent need for novel anthelmintic agents. In the pursuit of novel therapeutic agents, we assessed the in vivo anthelmintic efficacy of 20 natural compounds using a goldfish (Carassius auratus)-Gyrodactylus kobayashii infection model. Among these compounds, naringenin (NAR) exhibited the highest

Presence of Adult Cardicola forsteri (Trematoda: Aporocotylidae) in the Gills of Southern Bluefin Tuna: Implications for Diagnosis and Pathology.

Blood flukes cause serious health issues for farmed bluefin tuna worldwide. Their infection severity has been assessed by counting adult flukes in heart flushes. However, Cardicola orientalis adults reside in blood vessels in the gills. The aim of this study was to assess species composition, prevalence and intensity of adult blood fluke infection in gill blood vessels of ranched Southern Bluefin Tuna, Thunnus maccoyii. Based on molecular analysis, out of 41 adult blood flukes found in the gills of the tuna, 32 flukes were confirmed to be C. forsteri, while only 1 fluke was C. orientalis. Ther

Global distribution of zoonotic digenetic trematodes: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Digenetic trematodes, including blood flukes, intestinal flukes, liver flukes, lung flukes, and pancreatic flukes, are highly diverse and distributed widely. They affect at least 200 million people worldwide, so better understanding of their global distribution and prevalence are crucial for controlling and preventing human trematodiosis. Hence, this scoping review aims to conduct a comprehensive investigation on the spatio-temporal distribution and epidemiology of some important zoonotic digenetic trematodes. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review by searching PubMed, Web of Scie
