[Observation of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide in patients with trigeminal neuralgia: a 16-cases report].

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to observe whether vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) participated in the attack of trigeminal neuralgia, and to understand further its pathogenetic mechanism. METHODS: Sixteen patients were studied. During the attacks the venous blood was sampled from both the external jugular vein and cubital fossa vein ipsilateral to the pain, and after operations the venous blood from the external jugular vein was sampled again, the external jugular vein blood of eleven normal volunteers was collected as the control. Plasma levels of VIP were determined using sens

Silent mixed ganglioneuroma/pheochromocytoma which produces a vasoactive intestinal polypeptide.

An unusual pheochromocytoma was incidentally discovered in a 48-year-old woman. The patient had a 3-year history of myasthenia gravis. At the time of examination in our hospital, the right adrenal tumor was incidentally discovered by ultrasonography of the abdomen. She had no history of headache, perspiration, palpitation or hypertension. Although blood catecholamine levels were within the normal limits, urinary secretion of catecholamine was elevated. Histologically, the tumor was diagnosed to be mixed ganglioneuroma/pheochromocytoma and histochemically confirmed to produce vasoactive intesti

The influence of experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage on the relaxation induced by vasoactive intestinal polypeptide in the cerebral arteries of the rabbit.

The influence of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) on vasodilatation induced by vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) was investigated in rabbit basilar arteries. VIP-induced relaxation was measured in ring sections of the basilar arteries precontracted by 10(-5) M serotonin using an isometric tension recording method. The cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) content was measured using radioimmunoassay as an indicator of the intracellular mechanism in the arterial smooth muscle cells. VIP (10(-11)-10(-6) M) evoked dose-dependent relaxation of the basilar arteries. The relaxation achieved with 1

Vasoactive intestinal polypeptides in connective tissue massage. With a note on VIP in heat pack treatment.

The vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) is a powerful dilatator in a number of vascular beds. Plasma VIP is increased in active physical exercise and in transcutaneous nerve stimulation. Plasma VIP has in this study been measured during other physiotherapeutic procedures causing skin vasodilatation, such as connective tissue massage and heat packs. Plasma VIP levels and skin temperature of fingers and toes were measured in 12 patients before and at various intervals following a 30 min connective tissue massage. No significant increase in the plasma VIP was found. The same was true in a pil

Interactions of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide and cholecystokinin octapeptide on the control of gallbladder contraction.

The gallbladder is supplied by three types of vagal fibers: cholinergic, cholecystokinin (CCK)-ergic, and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP)-ergic. Most previous studies on the interaction of VIP and CCK on gallbladder contraction have been in vitro. In this study we evaluate this interaction more fully in vivo using six dogs with chronic bile fistula. Dose-response curves were constructed to CCK-8 alone and to VIP alone. The effect of graded doses of VIP on maximal response to CCK-8 was also studied. CCK-8 caused the expected dose-related stimulation of gallbladder contraction, while gra

Histochemical demonstration of a concomitant reduction in neural vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, acetylcholinesterase, and noradrenaline of cat uterus during pregnancy.

Noradrenaline, acetylcholinesterase, and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) were visualized in uterine nerves of cats by histochemical techniques. Alterations were followed in different regions of the organs at various stages of pregnancy and compared with the situation in non-pregnant controls. Positively stained nerve fibres, the adrenergic type being particularly well developed, were found along the muscle bundles and around blood vessels in the smooth muscle layers, as well as in the mucosa, of both uterine horns and cervix. The nerve supply was especially prominent in the upper part

Portal and systemic plasma VIP and secretin during intravenous infusion of Escherichia coli endotoxin in pigs.

Plasma vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) increased significantly in the portal vein, the superior caval vein, the internal jugular vein, and the aorta during an intravenous infusion of E. coli endotoxin in six anesthetized pigs, which all developed a deep shock, with fall in aortic blood pressure and urinary output. Plasma VIP peaked simultaneously with the most pronounced shock symptoms, and the level in the portal vein was significantly higher than in blood from the other sampling sites. In contrast, no significant change in plasma secretin was noted. It is suggested that the gastroint

Vasomotor rhinitis--pathophysiological aspects.

Vasomotor rhinitis is commonly defined as an unspecific hyperractivity of the nasal mucosa. The symptoms might be due to increased parasympathetic activity to the nose with the release of vaso-secretory active substances. Experimental data from the cat suggest that the postganglionic parasympathetic mediator of nasal secretion is cholinergic, whereas the vascular responses appears to be due to a different mechanism. Apart from a rich sympathetic and parasympathetic innervation of the nasal mucosa there are other nerve fibres containing substance-P (SP) and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VI

Calcitonin gene-related peptide as inflammatory mediator.

Sensory neuropeptides have been proposed to play a key role in the pathogenesis of a number of respiratory diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or chronic cough. Next to prominent neuropeptides such as tachykinins or vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) has long been suggested to participate in airway physiology and pathophysiology. CGRP is a 37 amino-acid peptide which is expressed by nerve fibers projecting to the airways and by pulmonary neuroendocrine cells. The most prominent effects of CGRP in the airways are vasodilata

Multiple regulatory elements result in regional specificity in circadian rhythms of neuropeptide expression in mouse SCN.

It is well established that the mammalian circadian system consists of pacemaker cells in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN). The mouse has become increasingly important in understanding the circadian timing system, due to the availability of mutant animals with abnormal circadian rhythms. In the present paper, we describe the organization of the mouse SCN, comparing the wild type and Clock mutant animal, with a special focus on those peptides bearing an upstream E-box element (vasopressin, vasoactive intestinal peptide, cholecystokinin and substance P). To this end, we describe the distribution…

Treatment of metastatic islet cell carcinoma with a somatostatin analogue (SMS 201-995).

We used an octapeptide analogue of somatostatin, SMS 201-995, in dosages ranging from 150 to 450 micrograms/d administered subcutaneously in three daily doses for 1 to 16 months, to treat 22 patients with advanced malignant islet cell carcinomas. Of the 22 patients, there were 9 with gastrinomas; 3 with glucagonomas; 4 with insulinomas; 1 with ectopic production of parathyroid hormone; and 3 with mixed syndromes. The only biochemical marker in 1 patient was pancreatic polypeptide, and 1 patient had no demonstrable peptide production from the tumor. In 14 patients, dramatic decreases in the lev

Enkephalin-, VIP- and substance P-like immunoreactivity in the carotid body.

The carotid body type I cell contains amines and has features, both morphological and cytochemical, which indicate that it may also produce a peptide. Many regulatory peptides are now known to be present in both central and peripheral tissues. In the periphery these neuropeptides occur in both classical endocrine (APUD) cells and the neurones of the autonomic nervous system. We have now investigated the possible presence of neuropeptides in the cat carotid body using both immunocytochemistry and radioimmunoassay. Met- and Leu-enkephalin-like material occurred in considerable quantities in caro

Psoriatic keratinocytes express high levels of nerve growth factor.

Many investigators have reported proliferation of terminal cutaneous nerves and upregulation of various neuropeptides (substance P, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, calcitonin gene-related peptide) in psoriatic lesions. Nerve growth factor promotes growth of nerves and causes upregulation of neuropeptides like substance P and calcitonin gene-related peptide. In this study we investigated the expression of nerve growth factor in psoriatic lesions, non-lesional psoriatic skin, lichen planus and normal control skin. Immunoperoxidase staining was applied on cryosections prepared from snap-frozen

Mechanisms in regulating the release of serotonin from the perfused rat stomach.

The mechanisms regulating the release of serotonin into the portal circulation as well as into the gastric lumen were studied in the isolate … by stimulation from cholinergic nicotinic mechanisms, whereas inhibitory neurotransmitters such as vasoactive intestinal peptide and NO are probably not involved. Somatostatin and peptide YY originating from endocrine cells may exert direct inhibitory effects, possibly via somatostatin and peptide YY receptors on the EC cells, and a cholinergic muscarinic mechanism may exert …

Dynorphin B is present in sensory and parasympathetic nerves innervating pial arteries.

Dynorphin B (dyn B) in trigeminal ganglion cells and in perivascular nerve fibers in pial arteries was demonstrated in rat, guinea-pig, and monkey by immunohistochemistry. The pathway from the trigeminal ganglion, which runs via the nasociliary nerve and ethmoidal foramen to the pial arteries, was shown in rat by retrograde tracer technique and nerve section. In the guinea-pig the peptide was demonstrated to coexist with substance P and calcitonin gene-related peptide in neurons of the trigeminal ganglion and pial nerve fibers, i.e., it was present in cerebrovascular sensory nerves with primar
