The objective of this study was to assess the perceptions and reported practices of osteopathic physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of addiction. Copies of survey questions were sent to the 344 members of the West Virginia Osteopathic Society. A total of 176 (51.2%) physicians responded; of these responses, 166 surveys were used for analysis. From 1919 to 1952, approximately 20 000 individuals were sterilized in California's state institutions on the basis of eugenic laws that sought to control the reproductive capacity of people labeled unfit and defective. Using data from more than 19 000 sterilization recommendations processed by state institutions over this 33-year period, we provide the most accurate estimate of living sterilization survivors. Mercury has contaminated rivers worldwide, with health consequences for aquatic organisms and humans who consume them. Researchers have focused on aquatic birds as sentinels for mercury. However, trophic transfer between adjacent ecosystems could lead to the export of aquatic mercury to terrestrial habitats. During June 2001--March 2003, outbreaks of Shigella sonnei infections were reported in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. Since January 1977, twenty-four patients with inverting papilloma of the nose and paranasal sinuses have been treated at the University of Virginia. Two patients had bilateral disease, for a total of 26 surgically treated sides. Patients were aged from 10 to 83 years, and 71% were male. Free-living amebas of the genus Naegleria, of world-wide distribution and long considered harmless, have been linked etiologically with 57 fatal cases of primary amebic meningoencephalitis during the last decade.
