Iron and Vitamin B12 Deficiency in Patients with Autoimmune Gastritis and Helicobacter pylori Gastritis: Results from a Prospective Multicenter Study.

INTRODUCTION: Iron and vitamin B12 deficiencies are common in patients with atrophic gastritis, but there are limited data on the prevalence of these deficiencies in different types of atrophic gastritis. METHODS: This multicenter, prospective study assessed micronutrient concentrations in histologically confirmed autoimmune gastritis (AIG, n = 45), Helicobacter pylori-related non-autoimmune gastritis (NAIG, n = 109), and control patients (n = 201). A multivariate analysis was performed to determine factors influencing those deficiencies. RESULTS: The median vitamin B12 concentration was sig

[Myelosis funicularis as a result of secondary vitamin B12 deficiency in a 9-year-old girl].

UNLABELLED: A nine-year-old girl without aggravating family history or adverse pregnancy and neonatal outcome, who underwent a resection of the end section of the small bowel as a result of atresia in the first twenty four hours of her life, was admitted to the Department on account of spastic paresis of the lower extremities. Apathy and tiredness appeared the most striking features on the physical examination of the child; likewise the pale colour of skin and a scar on the abdomen integuments--a result of the resection. Neurological examination revealed pyramidal syndrome from the lower extre

Folate and cobalamin in psychiatric illness.

The linkage of cobalamin and folate deficiency to psychiatric illness has been studied and debated since these vitamins were first discovered in the 1940s. The clinical relevance of these deficiencies remains the subject of investigation and scholarly discussion. This article reviews case reports and studies derived from a MEDLINE search for English-language articles related to folate, cobalamin, and psychiatric illness. Emphasis is given to clinical research and recent developments. Preclinical evidence for direct effects of folate and cobalamin on brain functioning is compelling, and numerou

Inborn errors of metabolism. Vitamin-responsive genetic disease.

The several ways in which vitamin administration may bring about a biochemical response in genetic abnormalities have been discussed. Two major interrelated lessons emerge from what we now know about vitamin-responsive genetic disease. First, it is possible to enhance metabolite flow through partially deficient reactions by suitable manipulation of the environment in which a fixed amount of enzyme functions or by changing the concentration of the enzyme itself. The latter approach may be the most versatile in the long run since there may be agents other than vitamins which increase enzyme conc

Cobalamin and iron deficiency still presents a challenge in hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia.

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) leads to fragile blood vessels, causing frequent bleeding and anemia. Treatment mainly addresses iron levels and substitution. Although cobalamin (vitamin B12) is routinely tested in chronic anemia, its role in HHT has not been studied until now. This study examined its prevalence and related symptoms in HHT patients. Data from HHT patients treated between July 2019 and November 2022 were analyzed. Patients with cobalamin levels under 400 pg/ml underwent further testing and questioning. Among 155 patients, 42% were anemic, and 45% had cobalamin level

Iron, folate, vitamin B-12, zinc, and copper status in outpatients with Crohn's disease: effect of diet counseling.

Iron, folate, and vitamin B-12 status was found to be poor in a substantial proportion of outpatients with generally inactive Crohn's disease. Diet counseling was associated with a normalization of TIBC and serum folate over a 6-month period, but no other consistent benefits were noted despite moderate improvements in intake. The outpatients appeared to be at low risk of developing a zinc or copper deficiency.

Vitamin B-12 malabsorption and renal function are critical considerations in studies of folate and vitamin B-12 interactions in cognitive performance: NHANES 2011-2014.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive health is a public health concern among older adults. Dietary supplement (SUP) use is common and concerns have been raised about high folic acid intake among those with vitamin B-12 deficiency and exacerbation of poor cognitive performance (PCP). OBJECTIVES: We evaluated SUP use, usual folic acid intake, and blood folate and vitamin B-12 concentrations in relation to cognitive performance. METHODS: We used NHANES 2011-2014 data on adults aged ≥60 y (n = 2867) and estimated total usual folic acid intake from diet and supplements, vitamin B-12 intake from SUPs, blood fola

Lessons of the month: Nitrous oxide-induced functional vitamin B12 deficiency causing subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord.

We discuss the case of a 22-year-old man who presented with paraesthesia, reduced sensation and weakness in his limbs. Examination was in keeping with a myeloneuropathy. Initial investigations including vitamin B12 were unremarkable but magnetic resonance imaging of the spinal cord showed subacute combined degeneration. The patient reported heavy recreational use of nitrous oxide, which can cause functional deficiency of vitamin B12 with neurological sequelae. A diagnosis of functional vitamin B12 deficiency was made and confirmed by an elevated methylmalonic acid level. The patient received i

Assessment of peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness in children with vitamin B12 deficiency.

PURPOSE: Vitamin B(12) deficiency is a worldwide problem. It affects all ages, including children. It is one of the most common nutritional disorders and can cause harmful effects on the nervous system. In this study, we compared the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT) in a healthy control group with children with vitamin B(12) deficiency. In our study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of vitamin B(12) deficiency on the RNFLT in children with the optical coherence tomography (OCT) method. METHODS: Sixty-six children with a diagnosis of vitamin B(12) deficiency (patient gr
