Hyperhomocysteinemia is a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease in an Algerian population.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: There is growing evidence that increased blood concentration of total homocysteine (tHcy) may be a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). The present study was conducted to evaluate the association of serum tHcy and other biochemical risk factors with AD. METHODS: This is a case-control study including 41 individuals diagnosed with AD and 46 nondemented controls. Serum levels of all studied biochemical parameters were performed. RESULTS: Univariate logistic regression showed a significant increase of tHcy (p = 0.008), urea (p = 0.036) and a significant decrease of vit

Vitamin B12 intramuscular injections versus oral supplements: a budget impact analysis.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to adverse health effects such as anemia and, in some cases, permanent neurologic damage. In Canada, patients with vitamin B12 deficiency are typically given intramuscular injections, which incur considerable cost and inconvenience. The clinical evidence-based analysis has found that oral supplementation is as effective as intramuscular injections. OBJECTIVES: This economic analysis aimed to estimate the cost savings of switching from intramuscular injections to high-dose oral supplements for patients aged 18 years and older with confirmed vitamin B

You are what you eat: of fish, fat and folate in late-life psychiatric disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: There has been increasing research into the role of nutritional factors in mood and cognitive disorders in later life. This review evaluates findings from recent research for the role and effect of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and B vitamins in mood and cognitive disorders in later life. RECENT FINDINGS: Epidemiological studies, including genetic epidemiological ones, continue to provide support for the role of folate and/or vitamin B12 in mood disorders in later life. However, evidence from recent randomized controlled trials for the effect of these B vitamins a

Vitamin B-12 and neural tube defects: the Canadian experience.

Although early epidemiologic studies showed a protective effect of adequate maternal folic acid (FA) status against neural tube defects (NTDs), the role of adequate vitamin B-12 nutrition in the putative reduction of NTD frequency has remained uncertain. Evaluating vitamin B-12 status was complicated by the need to control for altered FA status after fortification in Canada. More recent studies have made use of better biomarkers of vitamin B-12 status, including methylmalonic acid and holotranscobalamin (holoTC). HoloTC provides a useful measure of vitamin B-12 status because it represents the

Effects of Dietary Vitamin and Mineral Combinations on Production Performance and Immune Response in Pigeons.

BACKGROUND: Pigeon farming represents an important component of the poultry sector in Bangladesh; however, productivity is frequently constrained by infectious diseases, particularly Newcastle disease (ND). OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the effects of dietary supplementation with different vitamin and mineral combinations on production performance and humoral immune response to ND vaccination in adult pigeons. METHODS: Sixteen pairs of 3-month-old Gola pigeons were randomly assigned to four groups: T0 (basal diet, unvaccinated control), T1 (basal diet supplemented with vitamins A, D and E

Gut microbiota response to Enterocytozoon bieneusi infection in wild rodents: enhanced vitamin B and K2 biosynthesis pathways.

Enterocytozoon bieneusi (E. bieneusi) is a pathogenic microsporidian that affects immunocompromised individuals, including those with HIV, and represents a major cause of diarrhea. It can severely impact human health, causing gastrointestinal disease, nutritional deficits, and life-threatening complications. However, the microbial mechanisms by which E. bieneusi affects host nutrition are not well understood. Wild rodents have long been considered valuable models for studying human diseases due to similarities in gut microbiota dynamics and immune responses, making them particularly relevant f

Chronic oral administration of L-carnitine induces testicular injury: in vivo evidence.

PURPOSE: While L-carnitine is commonly used to treat oligoasthenozoospermia, concerns have been raised regarding its potential harm to spermatogenesis. This study aims to investigate the potential testicular toxicity of long-term oral administration of L-carnitine. METHODS: In this study, we refer to the clinical adult dosage and mode of L-carnitine administration, and after converting to mouse doses, mice were daily intragastrical administered L-carnitine to investigate whether it was harmful to the testis. The investigation involved assessing its potential testicular toxicity through histop

Efficacy of high thiamine dosage in treating patients with biotin thiamine responsive basal ganglia disease: a two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Biotin-thiamine-responsive basal ganglia disease (BTBGD) is a rare, autosomal recessive neurometabolic disorder caused by mutations in the SLC19A3 gene and characterized by recurrent sub-acute episodes of encephalopathy. Patients with BTBGD have classical neuroimaging findings and a dramatic response to high doses of thiamine. OBJECTIVE: To highlight the advantages of administering a higher dose of thiamine for patients with BTBGD who have not shown improvement with the standard recommended dosage. RESULTS: Herein, we report on two Saudi girls with classical clinical and radiolog

Wernicke's encephalopathy treated with high dose intravenous thiamine: a case report.

Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE) is a dangerous and potentially fatal neurological condition associated with thiamin deficiency. The standard treatment for WE is intravenous (IV) thiamin, but limited research describes optimal dosing. We present a case of a 40-year-old male with severe alcohol use disorder (AUD) and chronic malnourishment who developed WE. Upon administration of 100 mg IV thiamin, symptoms of WE persisted, but when the dose was increased to 500 mg, altered mental status and ophthalmoplegia resolved rapidly. IV thiamin is a reliable and low-risk treatment for WE, even when admini

Deficiency of B vitamins leads to cholesterol-independent atherogenic transformation of the aorta.

Atherosclerosis, the leading cause of cardiovascular disease responsible for the majority of deaths worldwide, cannot be sufficiently explained by established risk factors, including hypercholesterolemia. Elevated plasma homocysteine is an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis and is strongly linked to cardiovascular mortality. However, the role of homocysteine in atherosclerosis is still insufficiently understood. Previous research in this area has been also hampered by the lack of reproducible in vivo models of atherosclerosis that resemble the human situation. Here, we have developed

Chronic Diarrhea in a Drinker: A Breakthrough Case of Pellagra in the US South.

The triad of diarrhea, dementia, and dermatitis constitutes the clinical diagnosis of pellagra. However, most reported cases of pellagra have occurred without all components of the triad. Pellagra was declared eradicated in the United States after an outbreak in the 1920s, and is now considered to be an exceedingly rare diagnosis in developed countries. In this article, we present a case of a 56-year-old man who presented with a significant history of alcohol use and chronic diarrhea. Pellagra was clinically diagnosed based on the triad of diarrhea, cognitive dysfunction, and dermatitis in thi

Comparison of the Acute Postprandial Circulating B-Vitamin and Vitamer Responses to Single Breakfast Meals in Young and Older Individuals: Preliminary Secondary Outcomes of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

B-vitamin deficiency is common in ageing populations either due to altered dietary habits or altered digestive and metabolic functions. There is limited data on the acute circulating concentrations of B-vitamins and their various forms (vitamers), following ingestion of realistic meals. This study compared the acute circulating B-vitamin and vitamer responses to either an energy-dense (ED) or a nutrient-dense (ND) breakfast meal, consumed in a randomized cross-over sequence, in older and younger adults (n = 15 and 15, aged 67.3 ± 1.5 and 22.7 ± 0.5 years (mean ± SEM), respectively). Eleven dif

Homocysteine metabolism and its relation to health and disease.

Homocysteine is a metabolic intermediate in methyl group metabolism that is dependent on a number of nutritional B-vitamin cofactors. An emerging aspect of homocysteine metabolism is its relation to health and disease. Perturbations of homocysteine metabolism, particularly intracellular and subsequently circulating accumulation of homocysteine (i.e., hyperhomocysteinemia), are associated with vascular disease risk, as well as other pathologies. However, intervention with B-vitamin supplementation has been shown to successfully restore normal homocysteine concentrations, but without concomitant

Folic acid and cognition in older persons.

Folic acid supplementation has drawn much attention in recent years for the prevention of Alzheimer's disease and cognitive decline. In this review, the authors describe how current evidence does not support the use of folic acid supplements to protect against cognitive decline. Although a few studies suggest that folic acid supplementation may provide neuroprotection among persons who are folate deficient, there is also data to indicate that supplementation in persons without folate deficiency may pose a risk to neurological function. Vitamin B12 deficiency is common in old age and may not be

Homocysteine, vitamins, and prevention of vascular disease.

Within the past four decades, the efforts of investigators worldwide have established the amino acid homocysteine as an important factor in arteriosclerosis and diseases of aging. After its discovery in 1932, homocysteine was demonstrated to be an important intermediate in the metabolism of amino acids. However, little was known about the broader biomedical significance of homocysteine until 1962, when children with mental retardation, accelerated growth, dislocated ocular lenses, and frequent vascular thrombosis were found to excrete homocysteine in the urine. My study of two patients with ho
