Ferulic acid is a potent ubiquitous plant antioxidant. Its incorporation into a topical solution of 15%l-ascorbic acid and 1%alpha-tocopherol improved chemical stability of the vitamins (C+E) and doubled photoprotection to solar-simulated irradiation of skin from 4-fold to approximately 8-fold as measured by both erythema and sunburn cell formation. Inhibition of apoptosis was associated with reduced induction of caspase-3 and caspase-7. This antioxidant formulation efficiently reduced thymine dimer formation. This combination of pure natural low molecular weight antioxidants provides meaningf…

Modulating the amount of radiation-induced apoptosis by administering antioxidant vitamins offers a possible way to influence radiation-induced side effects in normal tissues. Therefore, we investigated the effect of beta-carotene, vitamin C and alpha-tocopherol on radiation-induced apoptosis in cells in culture. Human T-lymphoblastic MOLT-3 cells were irradiated with a dose of 3 Gy 1 h after or immediately prior to the addition of vitamins in three concentrations (0.01 microM, 1 microM and 100 microM). Eight hours later, apoptosis was scored morphologically by staining the nuclear DNA with Ho…

The recovery of glutathione and its metabolising enzymes (glutathione disulfide reductase, glutathione peroxidase, thiol transferase, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase and glutathione transferase) along with sulfhydryl groups and byproduct of lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde) in the brain, spinal cord, kidney and liver of mice, altered during methylmercury chloride (MMC) intoxication, is recorded in post-therapeutic treatment with vitamins and monothiols. For this purpose ten groups of animals were intoxicated with 1 mg/kg MMC/day for 7 days. Out of these, one group was sacrificed on 8th day an…

The effects of ingesting the alga Spirulina maxima on the storage and utilization of vitamins A and E were investigated by feeding diets containing 0, 2.7, 10.7, 18.7 and 26.7% S. maxima to male rats for 6 wk. All diets contained 18% protein, which was contributed by S. maxima or by casein or by a mixture of them. Growth results indicated that rats did not utilize the diets containing S. maxima as well as the casein control diet (0% S. maxima) when levels were 10.7% or more of the diet. The ingestion of S. maxima caused a significant increase in dry matter and chloroform-extractable crude fat …

Dietary intakes of thiamine, riboflavin, nicotinic and ascorbic acid, together with the biochemical status of thiamine, riboflavin, pyridoxine and ascorbic acid, were determined in a cluster sample of 419 healthy active elderly subjects aged 60 years and above living in the community. Nicotinic acid intake per 1000 kcal (4.18 MJ) of food energy showed an age-related decrease in men, while women had higher ascorbic acid intakes than men. Between 38 and 98 per cent of this population have intakes of thiamine, riboflavin and nicotinic acid below the UK RDA values. Intakes of ascorbic acid were be

Experiments were conducted to determine the influence of dietary levels of vitamin A and alpha-tocopherol on the amounts and composition of retinyl esters in the retinal pigment epithelium of light-adapted albino rats. Groups of rats were fed diets containing alpha-tocopherol and either no retinyl palmitate, adequate retinyl palmitate, or excessive retinyl palmitate. Other groups of rats received diets lacking alpha-tocopherol and containing the same three levels of retinyl palmitate. Retinoic acid was added to diets lacking retinyl palmitate. After 27 weeks, the animals were light-adapted to
