Could snorts inform us on how horses perceive riding?

Several previous studies have shown that working conditions (including riding) can induce stress in horses. Riders' actions and postures, when inappropriate, induce stress and conflict behaviours during riding and welfare impairment and negative emotional states outside work. Optimistic biases have been found in leisure horses, which, amongst positive management factors, were ridden with loose reins and low hands. Thus, one can wonder whether horses may positively perceive work or parts of it. Indicators of positive emotions are poorly known yet but we recently found that, out of the working c

Developmental experience with anthropogenic noise hinders adult mate location in an acoustically signalling invertebrate.

Phenotypic plasticity facilitates survival and reproduction in rapidly changing and novel environments. Traffic noise spectrally overlaps with (i.e. masks) the sounds used by many acoustically signalling organisms to locate and secure mates. To determine if pre-reproductive exposure to noise improves adult performance in noisy environments, we reared field crickets (Teleogryllus oceanicus) in one of three noise environments: masking traffic noise, traffic noise from which frequencies that spectrally overlap with the crickets' song were removed (non-masking), or silence. At reproductive maturit

Bonobos (Pan paniscus) vocally protest against violations of social expectations.

Research has shown that great apes possess certain expectations about social regularities and both perceive and act according to social rules within their group. During natural and experimentally induced contexts, such as the inequitable distribution of resources, individuals also show protesting behaviors when their expectations about a social situation are violated. Despite broad interest in this topic, systematic research examining the nature of these expectations and the communicative signals individuals use to express them remains scant. Here, we addressed this by exploring whether bonobo

Natural changes in brain temperature underlie variations in song tempo during a mating behavior.

The song of a male zebra finch is a stereotyped motor sequence whose tempo varies with social context--whether or not the song is directed at a female bird--as well as with the time of day. The neural mechanisms underlying these changes in tempo are unknown. Here we show that brain temperature recorded in freely behaving male finches exhibits a global increase in response to the presentation of a female bird. This increase strongly correlates with, and largely explains, the faster tempo of songs directed at a female compared to songs produced in social isolation. Furthermore, we find that the

Song sharing and singing strategies in the winter wren Troglodytes troglodytes.

The winter wren is a common forest bird living in groups of few adjacent neighbours during the breeding season. Inside each group, males vocally interact in the context of both territorial holding and sexual competition, forming a complex communication network. To study this network, we first analysed song type and syllable repertoires within and between distinct groups. We found a limited number of song types highly stereotyped in length, syntax and syllable composition, frequently shared among neighbours. Between groups, song type and syllable repertoires sharing decreased with increasing di

The Bengalese finch: a window on the behavioral neurobiology of birdsong syntax.

The Bengalese finch Lonchura striata var. domestica is a domesticated strain of a wild species, the white-rumped munia Lonchura striata of Southeast Asia. Bengalese finches have been domesticated in Japan for 240 years. Comparing their song syntax with that of their wild ancestors, we found that the domesticated strain has highly complex, conspicuous songs with finite-state syntax, while the wild ancestor sang very stereotyped linear songs. To examine the functional utility of the song complexity, we compared serum levels of estradiol and measured the amount of nesting materials carried into t

Fate of liposuctioned and purified autologous fat injections in the canine vocal fold.

Injection of autologous fat obtained by liposuction has been reported as an augmentation technique for vocal fold paralysis. Unfortunately, it is not known whether this technique is associated with long-term graft survival. The purpose of this study, using a canine model, was to determine the volume of viable injected fat grafts when the tissue was harvested and processed by two different methods: 1. by liposuction alone, and 2. by "purification," i.e., excision of adipose tissue, followed by tissue homogenization and centrifugation in a buffering solution. The results of this study confirm th

Developmental vitamin D-deficiency produces autism-relevant behaviours and gut-health associated alterations in a rat model.

Developmental vitamin D (DVD)-deficiency is an epidemiologically established risk factor for autism. Emerging studies also highlight the involvement of gut microbiome/gut physiology in autism. The current study aims to examine the effect of DVD-deficiency on a broad range of autism-relevant behavioural phenotypes and gut health. Vitamin D deficient rat dams exhibited altered maternal care, DVD-deficient pups showed increased ultrasonic vocalizations and as adolescents, social behaviour impairments and increased repetitive self-grooming behaviour. There were significant impacts of DVD-deficienc

Sexual excitation induces courtship ultrasonic vocalizations and cataplexy-like behavior in orexin neuron-ablated male mice.

Cataplexy is triggered by laughter in humans and palatable food in mice. To further evaluate mice's cataplexy, we examined courtship behavior in orexin neuron-ablated mice (ORX-AB), one of the animal models of narcolepsy/cataplexy. Wild-type female mice were placed into the home cage of male ORX-AB and cataplexy-like behavior was observed along with ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs), also known as the "love song". ORX-AB with a female encounter showed cataplexy-like behavior both during the dark and light periods, whereas ORX-AB with chocolate predominantly showed it during the dark period. Duri

Inhibitory plasticity in a lateral band improves cortical detection of natural vocalizations.

The interplay between excitation and inhibition in the auditory cortex is crucial for the processing of acoustic stimuli. However, the precise role that inhibition plays in the distributed cortical encoding of natural vocalizations has not been well studied. We recorded single units (SUs) and local field potentials (LFPs) in the awake mouse auditory cortex while presenting pup isolation calls to animals that either do (mothers) or do not (virgins) recognize the sounds as behaviorally relevant. In both groups, we observed substantial call-evoked inhibition. However, in mothers this was earlier,

Light and scanning electron microscopic investigation of the laryngeal mucosa of Syrian golden hamsters.

The laryngeal epithelium of Syrian golden hamsters (SGH) at 8, 12.5 and 17 months was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy (LM). Stratified squamous epithelium, covered with shallow microvilli or microplicae, was observed covering the upper two-thirds of the laryngeal epiglottis, the false folds, the vocal cords and the luminal protrusions of the arytenoid cartilages. Pseudostratified respiratory epithelium, characterized by mucus producing cells with microvilli and ciliated cells, covered the base of the epiglottis and the entire subglottis. Transitional zones be

Evaluating the potential role of tryptophan in calf milk replacers to facilitate weaning.

Tryptophan is a precursor of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that participates in the control of the affective state of an animal. We hypothesized that Trp supplementation could help dairy calves to cope with weaning stress. Twenty-seven Holstein male calves (48 ± 0.8 d old; 82 ± 2.6 kg of body weight) were used to evaluate the effects of Trp supplementation at a rate of 4.5 g/d via milk replacer (MR) on performance and behavioral parameters around weaning. All calves received the same feeding program (6 L/d at 15% dry matter from d 1 to 7, 4 L/d at 15% dry matter from d 8 to 14, and 2 L/d at 15

Neural and behavioral teratological evaluation of rats exposed to ultra-wideband electromagnetic fields.

Several investigators have reported teratologic effects of electromagnetic field exposure. The majority of these studies have been performed at levels of exposure that could produce substantial heating of the animals. New and unique sources of ultra-wideband (UWB) electromagnetic fields are currently being developed and tested that are capable of generating nonthermalizing, high-peak-power, microwave (MW) pulses with nanosecond (ns) pulse widths, picosecond (ps) rise times, and an UWB of frequencies. Our study was performed to determine if teratological changes occur in rat pups as a result of

Rearing condition affects behavioral response to cross-modal expectancy violation paradigm in zebra finches.

Recognizing other individuals across multiple sensory modalities is important for animals in social groups. Processing of multisensory information is shaped by social and sensory experiences, especially early in development. Zebra finches form lasting pair-bonds and recognize their partners acoustically and visually. However, the degree to which multisensory integration or developmental experience shape recognition is unclear. We tested female responses to audiovisual stimuli where audio and video of familiar (partner) or unfamiliar birds was congruent (e.g., familiar audio and familiar video)

Ultrasonic vocalizations in mice and rats: New applications and recent developments from sender to receiver.

Mice and rats emit ultrasonic vocalizations (USV) above the human hearing range. Such USV are widely regarded as reliable indicators of the animal's affective state. Moreover, USV serve important communicative functions. Given their prominent role in social communication, this review adopts a reciprocal framework that considers both sender and receiver, with particular emphasis on both the production and perception of USV. The review focuses on sex differences and subtype variations in the sender, and explores the communicative value of USV through playback studies, revealing their role in reg

A cross-taxonomic explanatory framework for mobbing behavior.

Mobbing is an important antipredator strategy wherein prey approach harass and attack nonhunting predators, using conspicuous stereotyped movements and/or vocalizations. This behavior can reduce current and future threats of predation. In this paper, we aim to provide a framework that integrates prey, predator, and environmental factors, to illuminate how multiple factors and their interactions can explain mobbing propensity. We hope to encourage targeted and systematic investigation into the ecology and evolution of mobbing by focusing on an integrated view on life history, social, and ecolog

Genetic advances and translational phenotypes in rodent models for Tourette disorder.

Tourette disorder (TD) is a neurodevelopmental condition affecting approximately 0.3%-1% of children and adolescents. It is defined by motor and vocal tics but encompasses wide ranging phenotypes due to its complex genetic origins, involving hundreds of risk genes across various signaling pathways. Traditional animal models of TD have focused on circuit manipulation or neuron ablation strategies to investigate its underlying causes and associated brain changes. However, the recent identification of high-confidence risk genes has opened new possibilities for creating models that express the exa

WWC1 mutation drives dopamine dysregulation and synaptic imbalance in Tourette's syndrome.

Tourette's syndrome (TS) is a major neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by childhood-onset motor and vocal tics. A W88C mutation in WWC1 gene is a notable risk factor for TS, but the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear due to the lack of suitable animal models. Here, we generate a mutant mouse line with human W88C mutation (W88CMut mice), which exhibits behavioral deficits similar to those observed in patients with TS, including repetitive motor behaviors and sensorimotor gating abnormalities. The W88C mutation leads to the degradation of kidney and brain (KIBRA) protein via a
