Volatile organic compounds in a typical petrochemical production area in Shanghai, China: Source profiles, human health and environmental impacts.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from industrial facilities include significant precursors to the formation of aerosols and ozone in urban areas, often affecting atmospheric environments and public health. By investigating the VOC emission profiles across nine petrochemical production units, the predominant component in VOC emission profiles was alkanes, followed by oxygenated VOCs, aromatics, halocarbons, and alkenes. Aldehydes were identified as major contributors to odorous pollution. Chloroform, benzene, and 1,2-dibromoethane from petrochemical industry emissions exceeded health t…

Characterization of volatile organic compounds emissions and health risk assessment in coking industry: A case study in East China.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) represent a critical category of air pollutants, and the emissions from anthropogenic sources are essential for understanding and managing VOC pollution and the resultant ozone (O3) pollution. Several research initiatives have evaluated VOC emissions from significant industrial sources in China; however, knowledge regarding VOC emissions in the coking industry is still insufficient. The investigation examines the characteristics of VOC emissions from the coking industry through detailed unit-based field sampling, constructs emission source profiles, identifies…

The volatile organic compounds detection in MDR Gram-negatives antimicrobial susceptibility testing: Results from a four-month laboratory experience.

Systemic bacterial infections represent a significant clinical challenge due to the increasing resistance rate towards antimicrobials. An essential key to controlling antimicrobial resistance spread is to administer targeted therapy after a precise minimum inhibitory concentration reporting. Among the available fast technologies for antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST), the VITEKⓇ REVEAL™ (Biomerieux, Florence, Italy) proposes volatile organic compounds (VOC) colourimetric arrays to discriminate between susceptible and resistant Gram-negative isolates directly from positive blood culture…

Chemicals in European residences - Part I: A review of emissions, concentrations and health effects of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

One of the more important classes of potentially toxic indoor air chemicals are the Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). However, due to a limited understanding of the relationships between indoor concentrations of individual VOCs and health outcomes, there are currently no universal health-based guideline values for VOCs within Europe including the UK. In this study, a systematic search was conducted designed to capture evidence on concentrations, emissions from indoor sources, and health effects for VOCs measured in European residences. We identified 65 individual VOCs, and the most commonly m…
