Evidence for cortical structural plasticity in humans after a day of waking and sleep deprivation.

Sleep is an evolutionarily conserved process required for human health and functioning. Insufficient sleep causes impairments across cogniti … rtical thinning observed in the deprived group. Nonetheless, these cortices are thought to subserve wakefulness, are among the brain regions with highest metabolic rate during wake, and are considered some of the most sensitive cortical regions to a variety of insults. Furthermore, greater thinning within the left medial parietal cluster was associated with i …

[THE EFFECT OF MOTION SICKNESS ON THE SLEEP-WAKE CYCLE IN RATS EXPOSED TO PRENATAL HYPOXIA].

This study is a continuation of our research of phenomenology and mechanisms of motion sickness (MS) and the relation of this phenomenon to features of sleep-wake cycle (SWC) changes. It presents data about the effect of MS on SWC in 30-day-old intact rats and rats exposed previously to prenatal hypoxia on days 13 and 19 of gestation. In all groups of animals MS was shown to reduce significantly the waking time and to increase the time of paradoxical sleep (PS). For the first time it became possible to reveal a connection between hypothalamic mechanisms controlling MS and SWC and to suggest th

A 2-Year-Old Boy With Difficulty Waking After Bone Marrow Transplantation.

We report a 2-year-old boy who was evaluated for difficult waking during prolonged intensive care unit admission associated with bone marrow transplant for Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome. Neurologic examination was found to be abnormal, with nuchal rigidity initially, then decreased extremity movement and areflexia developing over several days. Electromyogram showed length-dependent, axonal, sensorimotor polyneuropathy. Cerebrospinal fluid showed albuminocytologic dissociation suggestive of Guillain-Barre syndrome or acute motor and sensory axonal neuropathy variant. The patient was treated with imm

Correlations between behavior, memory, sleep-wake and melatonin in Williams-Beuren syndrome.

Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS), a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by a microdeletion on chromosomic region 7q11.23, presents with peculiar behavioral and neurocognitive phenotypes that are marked by apparently preserved social and communicative abilities, which contrasts with low overall cognitive and particularly visuospatial performance. In addition, parents often report complaints of sleep disorders and behavioral problems of unknown cause. Sleep is a biological phenomenon that is modulated by the plasma concentration of melatonin and with influence on behavioral aspects and memory. Thus

Wake and Sleep EEG in Patients With Huntington Disease: An eLORETA Study and Review of the Literature.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the EEG modifications in patients with Huntington disease (HD) compared with controls, by means of the exact LOw REsolution Tomography (eLORETA) software. We evaluated EEG changes during wake, non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Moreover, we reviewed the literature concerning EEG modifications in HD. Twenty-three consecutive adult patients affected by HD were enrolled, 14 women and 9 men, mean age was 57.0 ± 12.4 years. Control subjects were healthy volunteers (mean age 58.2 ± 14.6 years). EEG and polygraphic recordings were pe

Sleep-wake cycle of the healthy term newborn infant in the immediate postnatal period.

OBJECTIVE: To examine sleep-wake cycle (SWC) composition of healthy term infants in the immediate postnatal period using EEG, and investigate factors that might influence it. METHODS: Multichannel video-EEG was recorded for a median of 61.9 min (IQR: 60.0-69.3). The absolute and relative scores of sleep states were calculated for each infant's recording. Parametric/non-parametric statistical tests and multiple linear regression analysis were used to investigate the influence of perinatal factors on SWC composition. RESULTS: Eighty healthy term infants aged 1-36 h were studied. A well-develop

Autonomic arousal during actigraphically estimated waking and sleep in male veterans with PTSD.

Physiological hyperarousal is manifested acutely by increased heart rate, decreased respiratory sinus arrhythmia, and increased skin conductance level and variability. Yet it is uncertain to what extent such activation occurs with the symptomatic hyperarousal of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We compared 56 male veterans with current PTSD to 54 males who never had PTSD. Subjects wore ambulatory devices that recorded electrocardiograms, finger skin conductance, and wrist movement while in their normal environments. Wrist movement was monitored to estimate sleep and waking periods. Heart

Determinants of altered sleep-wake rhythmicity in patients treated for nonfunctioning pituitary macroadenomas.

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: In a cohort of 17 patients treated for nonfunctioning pituitary macroadenoma (NFMA), we observed alterations in polysomnographic sleep characteristics and actigraphic sleep-wake rhythmicity, and subjective fatigue, daytime somnolence, and low sleep quality. We aimed to confirm the actigraphic data in a larger scale cohort of NFMA patients, powered to address risk factors for altered rhythmicity, including the effects of hydrocortisone replacement. METHODS: Sleep-wake rhythmicity in treated NFMA patients was measured using actigraphy for 7 days, and subjective sleep qual

Pre-treatment waking cortisol response and vulnerability to interferon α induced depression.

Depressive disorder is a common consequence of interferon α treatment. An understanding of the aetiological processes involved is evolving. HPA axis abnormalities are clearly described in community depressive disorder and represent vulnerability to depression development. We explored whether pre-treatment HPA axis abnormalities influence depression emergence during interferon α treatment. We examined waking HPA axis response via salivary cortisol sampling in 44 non-depressed, chronic hepatitis C infected patients due to commence standard interferon α treatment. Hamilton depression scales and t

[Effects of anti-dementia drugs on sleep-wake patterns in sleep-disturbed rats].

Dementia is a neurologic disorder presenting memory impairment as a main symptom. It is well known that patients often complain of sleep disturbance as an associated symptom in dementia. It has been reported that donepezil caused sleep disturbance, but little is known about the effect of galantamine on sleep-wake patterns. In the present study, we investigated the effects of anti-dementia drugs on sleep-wake patterns in sleep-disturbed rats. Single administration of donepezil and galantamine caused no significant effect on sleep-wake patterns at doses used in the present study in rats. On the

Performance and sleepiness during a 24 h wake in constant conditions are affected by diet.

This study investigated the effects of high-carbohydrate (HC) and high-fat (HF) diet on cognitive performance, and subjective and objective sleepiness. Seven male participants were kept awake for 24 h in a metabolic ward. Meals were given every 4h and cognitive performance and sleepiness ratings were assessed hourly. The Karolinska Drowsiness Test (KDT, EEG derived) was performed twice after meal. Performance in simple reaction time showed a significant interaction of diet and the post-prandial period, a slower reaction time was observed for the HC-diet 3.5 h after meal intake. Diet did not af

Arrhythmicity in a child with septo-optic dysplasia and establishment of sleep-wake cyclicity with melatonin.

We identified a 3-year-old child with septo-optic dysplasia with arrhythmic activity patterns. To assess whether melatonin could improve rest-activity patterns, 0.1 mg was administered orally at 19:00 hours. After therapy onset, normal rest-activity patterns appeared. These observations show that melatonin can restore normal rhythmicity in the absence of a normally functioning circadian clock.

Reversal of the sleep/wake cycle disorder of sleeping sickness after trypanosomicide treatment.

To determine whether the circadian disruption of the sleep/wake cycle observed in sleeping sickness, human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), can be reversed after trypanosomicide treatment, 10 Congolese patients infected by Trypanosoma brucei gambiense underwent 24-h polysomnographic recordings before treatment with melarsoprol and after each of three weekly treatment sessions. Polysomnography consisted of a continuous recording of the electroencephalogram, electromyogram and electro-oculogram on a Minidix Alvar polygraph. Sleep traces were analysed in 20-sec epochs for wakefulness, REM sleep, an…

The long-term course of spike and wave complexes in the waking EEG of chronic schizophrenics.

Nineteen chronic schizophrenics (8 males and 11 females) showed at least one spike and wave complex (SpW) in their rested-awake EEGs during long-term neuroleptic treatment. The age at the first appearance of the SpW ranged from 16 to 60 years, and the duration of neuroleptic medication preceding its appearance was from 1 to 35 years. Two types of SpW waveform were discriminated; one was a diffuse high voltage isolated 3.5-4 Hz SpW complex, and the other a diffuse moderate voltage 5-6 Hz SpW burst. In EEG studies repeated over the long-term, the presence of SpW was transient in 11 cases, interm
