Nutrient recovery and pollutant removal during renewable fuel production: opportunities and challenges.

Stimulated by the desire to achieve a Net Zero energy economy, the demand for renewable fuels is growing rapidly. The production of toxic waste streams that accompanies the transition from fossil fuels to renewable fuels is often overlooked. These waste streams include, among others, thiols and ammonia, and benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX). When suitable treatment technologies are available, these compounds can be converted to valuable nutrients. In this opinion article, we provide an overview of expected waste streams and their characteristics. We indicate future challenges for associated w

Modification of Lycium ruthenicum pomace dietary fibers: Enhanced physicochemical, structural, and functional properties.

Lycium ruthenicum pomace, a juice-processing by-product, is characterized by low soluble dietary fiber (SDF) content and limited functionality, which restricts its further application. In this study, the pomace dietary fibers (LPDFs) were modified using high-pressure homogenization (HPH), complex enzymatic hydrolysis (CE), and alkaline hydrogen peroxide (AHP), and the resulting changes in physicochemical, structural, and functional properties of both SDF and insoluble dietary fiber (IDF) fractions were evaluated. Modification treatments effectively increased SDF content (from 6.89% to 15.44%)

A Comprehensive Analysis of Non-Thermal Ultrasonic-Assisted Extraction of Bioactive Compounds from Citrus Peel Waste Through a One-Factor-at-a-Time Approach.

Food waste presents a critical environmental and economic challenge across Europe. In the Mediterranean region, the agricultural industry generates considerable quantities of citrus fruits, leading to significant byproduct waste, which remains underutilized. To help address this, this study explored the valorization of orange peel waste using non-thermal ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) and a one-factor-at-a-time experimental design to investigate the effects of nine chemical and physical UAE parameters. The goal was to identify ideal operational ranges for each parameter using several res

Insecticidal activity of bio-oil from the pyrolysis of straw from Brassica spp.

Agricultural crop residues can be converted through thermochemical pyrolysis to bio-oil, a sustainable source of biofuel and biochemicals. The pyrolysis bio-oil is known to contain many chemicals, some of which have insecticidal activity and can be a potential source of value-added pest control products. Brassicacae crops, cabbage, broccoli, and mustards, contain glucosinolates and isocyanates, compounds with recognized anti-herbivore activity. In Canada, canola Brassica napus straw is available from over 6 000 000 ha and mustard Brassica carinata and Brassica juncea straw is available from 20

Gasification of the char derived from distillation of granulated scrap tyres.

This work reports the effect of pressure on the steam/oxygen gasification at 1000°C of the char derived from low temperature-pressure distillation of granulated scrap tyres (GST). The study was based on the analysis of gas production, carbon conversion, cold gas efficiency and the high heating value (HHV) of the product. For comparison, similar analyses were carried out for the gasification of coals with different rank. In spite of the relatively high ash (≈12 wt.%) and sulphur (≈3 wt.%) contents, the char produced in GST distillation can be regarded as a reasonable solid fuel with a calorific

Effect of kaolin addition on the performance of controlled low-strength material using industrial waste incineration bottom ash.

Incineration of industrial waste produces large quantities of bottom ash which are normally sent to secured landfill, but is not a sustainable solution. Use of bottom ash in engineering applications will contribute to sustainability and generate revenue. One way of using the industrial waste incineration bottom ash is in controlled low-strength material (CLSM). Use of bottom ash in CLSM has problems related to bleeding and excessive strength development and so an additive has to be used to control bleeding and strength development. The main objective of this research is to study the effect of

Exposure conditions control plastic degradation in marine environments: Evidence from UV, floating, and intertidal experiments.

Plastic debris entering marine environments undergoes progressive weathering that promotes fragmentation into microplastics, yet the relative influence of polymer type and environmental exposure pathways on degradation dynamics remains insufficiently quantified. This study experimentally evaluated the degradation of six common consumer plastics (PET, HDPE, PVC, LDPE, PP, and PS) under three environmentally relevant scenarios: controlled UV-A irradiation in seawater, buoyant exposure simulating floating ocean debris, and intertidal coastal deployment subject to tidal cycles. Over periods of thr

Spent coffee grounds-derived water-in-oil-in-water double emulsions for edible coffee oil aroma preservation: A sustainable approach.

Spent coffee grounds (SCG) are generated in large quantities by the coffee industry and contain underutilized biomolecules with potential for sustainable food applications. This study focused on the development of water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) double emulsions, using SCG-derived polysaccharide-rich extracts to protect spent coffee oil (SCO) from oxidation and preserve its aroma. SCO was recovered by Soxhlet extraction (n-hexane and ethanol), while microwave-assisted extraction of defatted SCG yielded MW1_Sn and MW2_Sn, obtained at 150 °C and 180 °C, respectively. Ethanol-recovered SCO exhibite

Bio-based compounds from synergistic processing of bone waste via advanced ultrasound assisted-enzymatic pretreatment and fast pyrolysis.

This study investigates the synergistic processing of chicken bone waste through a novel combination of advanced ultrasound-assisted enzymatic pretreatment and fast pyrolysis conditions (500-900 °C, ∼100 °C/min). The higher process temperature inhibits CO2, and promotes ≥ C2, CH4, CO and H2. The pyrolysis gas energetic potential reaches a maximum of 33 MJ/Nm3, thus can serve as biofuel. The bio-oil derived from the pyrolysis of feedstock, whether pretreated by classical or enzymatic methods, yields rich in N-heterocycles. At ≥ 700 °C, bio-oil contains more heterocyclic compounds and hydrocarbo

Biodegradable plastics - Where to throw? A life cycle assessment of waste collection and management pathways in Austria.

The current waste management systems are struggling to optimally handle biodegradable plastics (BDPs) and are facing numerous challenges; one of which is the consumer confusion about how to best source-segregate BDPs. Based on an environmental life-cycle assessment, this study investigated the consequences of collecting BDPs in one of three waste streams (packaging waste, biowaste, and residual waste) in Austria. Collecting BDPs as (i) packaging waste resulted in incineration (SP1) or mechanical recycling (SP2), (ii) biowaste resulted in composting (SB1) or anaerobic digestion (AD) (SB2), and

A preliminary study of the cultivable microbiota on the plastic litter collected by commercial fishing trawlers in the south-eastern Adriatic Sea, with emphasis on Vibrio isolates and their antibiotic resistance.

Mediterranean Sea is the sixth largest area of marine litter accumulation in the world, and plastic pollution is a growing problem in its Adriatic sub-basin. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the cultivable microbiota associated with plastic litter collected by commercial fishing trawlers in the south-eastern Adriatic Sea in comparison with microbiota in seawater and sediment. Plastic litter in the sea contains an autochthonous microbiota that is different from that of the surrounding seawater and sediment. Vibrio abundance was higher on plastic litter than in surrounding seawater a

How plastic debris and associated chemicals impact the marine food web: A review.

Contamination from plastic debris is omnipresent in marine environments, posing a substantial risk to marine organisms, food webs and the ecosystem. The overlap between the size range of marine plastic pollution with prey means that plastics are readily available for consumption by organisms at all trophic levels. Large plastic debris can directly result in the death of larger marine organisms, through entanglement, strangulation, choking and starvation through a false sense of satiation. Whereas smaller plastic debris, such as micro- and nano-plastics can have adverse impact to marine organis
