The excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate is released from axons and glia under hypoxic/ischemic conditions. In vitro, oligodendrocytes (OLs) express non-NMDA glutamate receptors (GluRs) and are susceptible to GluR-mediated excitotoxicity. We evaluated the role of GluR-mediated OL excitotoxicity in hypoxic/ischemic white matter injury in the developing brain. Hypoxic/ischemic white matter injury is thought to mediate periventricular leukomalacia, an age-dependent white matter lesion seen in preterm infants and a common antecedent to cerebral palsy. Hypoxia/ischemia in rat pups at postnatal day…

This study measures self-reported sun avoidance practices, use of protective clothing, and use of sunscreen among 4,749 non-Hispanic white adults living in households in California. Data are from the California Behavioral Risk Factor Survey, a population-based telephone survey of health behaviors and attitudes. The average respondent spent at least 15 minutes in the sun on 21.4 days out of the last 30 days. Regular use of protective clothing was reported by 30.7%, regular use of sunscreen by 22.2%, and regular sun avoidance by 17.1% of the respondents. Results varied by month, gender, skin ton…

OBJECTIVE: To classify the white senile cataracts and report the results of phacoemulsification of white cataracts.
DESIGN: Prospective, noncomparative case series.
PARTICIPANTS: One hundred eyes were included.
INTERVENTION: White cataracts were examined biomicroscopically before surgery, and their acoustic structure was analyzed with standardized A-scan echography. White cataract surgery was performed with phacoemulsification via a superior temporal near-limbus corneal approach using a bimanual divide-and-conquer or stop-and-chop technique. Patients were followed after surgery for a period…

We compared a fast fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) pulse sequence with a dual-echo short tau fast inversion-recovery (DESTTIR) sequence in 20 children with white matter abnormalities. Although the overall image quality of DESTTIR images was better, the lesion-to-background contrast was significantly higher with the fast FLAIR pulse sequence and lesion detection was more accurate.

Chlamydia psittaci was isolated from the spleen of a moribund white-winged dove (Zenaida asiatica). The isolate was serotyped as the serovar B that is commonly isolated from pigeons. A fourfold increase in the titer of antichlamydial IgM activity occurred in that bird in paired serum samples tested by chlamydial elementary body agglutination (EBA) and a greater than or equal to fourfold decrease of IgG occurred by direct complement fixation (DCF). The increases or decreases of EBA and DCF titers in other clinically ill birds that were treated with tetracycline varied, as normally occurs in cas…

Historically, the overall health status as measured by life expectancy and infant mortality of Black and White Missourians has been significantly different. We analyzed birth, death, child death and communicable disease data to determine if Blacks have narrowed the gap in health status. The overall health status of Black and White Missourians improved over the last two decades. However, the gap in health status still remains, and in some cases, has gotten worse. This occurred despite the increase in health care financing through Medicare and Medicaid. To narrow the gap in health status between…

Vibration white finger or hand-arm vibration syndrome is the episodic blanching of the fingers in response to cold occurring in those who work with hand held vibrating tools. Clinically the condition differs from primary Raynaud's phenomenon as persistent paraesthesiae and pain are common in the hands and arms and these occur independently from the 'white attacks'. Symptoms can become severe enough to warrant a change of occupation. Industrial compensation may be awarded for vibration white finger but, at present, no simple or reliable objective diagnostic test is available. Calcitonin gene-re…

In this article we describe the rapid advances made in the molecular genetics of three inherited pigmentation disorders: albinism, piebaldis … rowth factor, also known as stem-cell factor, c-Kit-ligand, or steel factor). Mutations in W/c-kit (white spotting), Ph/Pdgfr/a (patch), and Sl/MGF (steel), lead to a reduction in receptor kinase activity and failure of melanocytes to thrive and reach the skin during embryogenesis. Finally, mouse mutant models suggest at least two possible causes for vi …

Although most asymptomatic patients with the Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome have a good prognosis, some die suddenly. Electrophysiological testing may identify patients at possible risk of sudden death. The mechanism of sudden death in these patients is believed to result from ventricular fibrillation due to atrial fibrillation with rapid anterograde conduction over the accessory pathway. Consequently, we performed electrophysiological studies in 40 asymptomatic patients with the Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. Certain electrophysiological properties clearly identified these patients: (1) in m…

The anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery (Bland-White-Garland Syndrome) is a rare congenital malformation reported to occur in 0.25-0.5% of all congenital cardiac anomalies. The clinical and pathomorphological picture can be classified into 2 types: infantile or adult. The infantile type is thought to lack coronary collaterals; this explains the bad prognosis and symptoms of non-operated patients. In the adult type collaterals are present or have developed in time to provide adequate blood supply to the myocardium. No history of cardiac complains and a nearly …

The management of the Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome (WPW) is controversial especially when the patient is asymptomatic. The aim of this study was to evaluate the electrophysiological characteristics of such patients. Thirty two asymptomatic subjects with overt WPW on the surface ECG aged 14 to 68 years (average 36 +/- 15 years) underwent endocavitary or oesophageal electrophysiological study with the following protocol: programmed atrial stimulation using 1 or 2 extrastimuli over 3 cycles to evaluate the induction of paroxysmal junctional tachycardia and atrial fibrillation; atrial pacing at …

Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis is an uncommon complication of hyperthyroidism. Hypokalemia, with associated flaccid paralysis, is the hallmark. Oriental men are most commonly affected. We have reported a case of TPP induced by Graves' disease in a white man with hypokalemia and hypophosphatemia. He was successfully treated with radioactive ablation and short-term administration of a beta blocker. The patient has remained asymptomatic for 12 months after treatment.

Ventricular fibrillation (VF) is a well-known but rare complication of the Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome (WPW). Clinical and electrophysiological data of 23 patients with spontaneous VF were compared with data from 100 consecutive patients with WPW without VF but with symptomatic supraventricular tachycardia. The 23 patients were collected in a multicentre retrospective study in seven European centres. VF occurred in only one patient who was receiving antiarrhythmic drugs, and was the first manifestation of the syndrome in six. No significant differences were found between those with VF and w…

Thirty-three patients were studied with Ebstein's anomaly, associated to Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome with the purpose of analyze their electrophysiologic characteristics. In this patients the right preexcitation was before the activation of the right ventricle mass, overshadowing the manifestations of the right bundle branch block (usual in patients with Ebstein's anomaly without preexcitation). In conclusion the absence of manifestations of right bundle branch block in the presence of Ebstein's anomaly diagnosed by hemodynamic study or echocardiography let us think in the coexistence of th…

The Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome is a multifaceted disorder that ranges from asymptomatic to life threatening. Accounting for approximately 20% of cases of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia and with a prevalence perhaps as high as 1 per 500, it is far from a rare disorder. Considering the potentially lethal complications following the administration of digoxin or verapamil, all physicians treating arrhythmias should know when to suspect the Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. A careful review of electrocardiograms helps identify cases of the disorder despite a wide range of findings that m…

Inferior brachygnathia in neonatal fawns occurred sporadically over a 10 yr period in a captive herd of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in southern Ontario. Two fawns submitted for necropsy had marked inferior brachygnathia, protruding tongues, and fractured long bones. Radiographs of the limbs revealed longitudinal striations of relatively translucent immature woven bone that caused loss of distinction between medullary cavities and cortices. Microscopically, there was failure of remodelling of the primary spongiosa and filling of the medulla by cone-shaped chondro-osseous cores. T…

White piedra or trichosporosis is a superficial mycosis of the hair shaft, caused by the yeast Trichosporon beigelii; it has been found in all continents and may involve the hair of any part of the body. We report a case of white piedra on the hairs of the inguinal fold with ultrastructural studies. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the nodules have the same morphological aspects as the fungus in culture (hyphae and arthrospores) except for the presence of a cementant substance. By scanning electron microscopy the elimination of spores was seen on the nodule surface. Interestingly s…
