Autonomic function in manganese alloy workers.

The observation of orthostatic hypotension in an index case of manganese toxicity lead to this prospective attempt to evaluate cardiovascular autonomic function and cognitive and emotional neurotoxicity in eight manganese alloy welders and machinists. The subjects consisted of a convenience sample consisting of an index case of manganese dementia, his four co-workers in a "frog shop" for gouging, welding, and grinding repair of high manganese railway track and a convenience sample of three mild steel welders with lesser manganese exposure also referred because of cognitive or autonomic symptom

Difference in Language Profiles of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder and Down Syndrome Is Not Driven by Non-Verbal Cognition.

BACKGROUND: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Down syndrome (DS) are among the most common types of neurodevelopmental conditions that have co-occurring language impairments. Usually, non-verbal IQ has been reported as one of the main predictors of language functioning in children with these conditions. Although language abilities of children with ASD and DS have been described in the previous studies, there is still a lack of direct comparisons of language profiles in the non-verbal IQ-matched groups of children with these disorders, and, therefore, it is largely unexplored whether language

Lithium effects on impulsivity and emotional processing.

Lithium is an effective treatment for mood disorders. However, its mechanism of action concerning its effect on impulsivity and emotional processing is still unclear. The current study aimed to investigate the effect of a 5-day lithium treatment on decision-making, reward-seeking and emotional processing in healthy volunteers. We conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over design study involving sixteen participants aged 18-50 years. Participants received lithium 800 mg once daily followed by matching placebo or vice versa for five days in a random order. Impulsivity and emotional

Gratitude at Work: Prospective Cohort Study of a Web-Based, Single-Exposure Well-Being Intervention for Health Care Workers.

BACKGROUND: Emotional exhaustion (EE) in health care workers is common and consequentially linked to lower quality of care. Effective interventions to address EE are urgently needed. OBJECTIVE: This randomized single-exposure trial examined the efficacy of a gratitude letter-writing intervention for improving health care workers' well-being. METHODS: A total of 1575 health care workers were randomly assigned to one of two gratitude letter-writing prompts (self- vs other focused) to assess differential efficacy. Assessments of EE, subjective happiness, work-life balance, and tool engagement w

Dopamine DRD2/ANKK1 Taq1A and DAT1 VNTR polymorphisms are associated with a cognitive flexibility profile in pathological gamblers.

Like drug addiction, pathological gambling (PG) has been associated with impairments in executive functions and alterations in dopaminergic functioning; however, the role of dopamine (DA) in the executive profile of PG remains unclear. The aim of this study was to identify whether the DRD2/ANKK1 Taq1A-rs1800497 and the DAT1-40 bp VNTR polymorphisms are associated with cognitive flexibility (measured by Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) and Trail Making Test (TMT)) and inhibition response (measured by Stroop Color and Word Test (SCWT)), in a clinical sample of 69 PG patients. Our results showe

High-Frequency Heart Rate Variability Linked to Affiliation with a New Group.

This study tests the hypothesis that high levels of high-frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV) predisposes individuals to affiliate with new groups. Resting cardiac physiological recordings were taken before and after experimental sessions to measure trait high-frequency heart rate variability as an index of dispositional autonomic influence on heart rate. Following an experimental manipulation of priming of caring-related words, participants engaged in a minimal group paradigm, in which they imagined being a member of one of two arbitrary groups, allocated money to members of the two grou

King-Devick Test Performance and Cognitive Dysfunction after Concussion: A Pilot Eye Movement Study.

(1) Background: The King-Devick (KD) rapid number naming test is sensitive for concussion diagnosis, with increased test time from baseline as the outcome measure. Eye tracking during KD performance in concussed individuals shows an association between inter-saccadic interval (ISI) (the time between saccades) prolongation and prolonged testing time. This pilot study retrospectively assesses the relation between ISI prolongation during KD testing and cognitive performance in persistently-symptomatic individuals post-concussion. (2) Results: Fourteen participants (median age 34 years; 6 women) w

Targeted Reactivation during Sleep Differentially Affects Negative Memories in Socially Anxious and Healthy Children and Adolescents.

Cognitive models propose a negative memory bias as one key factor contributing to the emergence and maintenance of social anxiety disorder (SAD). The long-term consolidation of memories relies on memory reactivations during sleep. We investigated in SAD patients and healthy controls the role of memory reactivations during sleep in the long-term consolidation of positive and negative information. Socially anxious and healthy children and adolescents learnt associations between pictures showing ambiguous situations and positive or negative words defining the situations' outcome. Half of the word

Framing memories: How the retrieval query format shapes the neural bases of remembering.

The way memory questions are framed influences the information that is searched, retrieved, and monitored during remembering. This fMRI study aimed at clarifying how the format of the retrieval query shapes the neural basis of source recollection. During encoding, participants made semantic (pleasantness) or perceptual (number of letters) judgments about words. Subsequently, in a source memory test, the retrieval query was manipulated such that for half of the items from each encoding task, the retrieval query emphasized the semantic source (i.e., semantic query format: "Is this word from the

Updated Italian norms for the Paired-Associate Learning Test (PALT).

BACKGROUND: Verbal associative learning is a key component of episodic memory and is frequently impaired in the early phases of neurodegenerative brain disorders. The Paired-Associate Learning Test (PALT) test directly probes this function, and its clinical usefulness critically depends on the availability of contemporary, population-specific normative data. AIMS: To provide updated, regression-based normative data for the Italian PALT. METHODS: Participants (N = 317) were administered the PALT, consisting of eight semantically related and unrelated word pairs presented over three learning tri

Neuropsychology of cognitive aging in rhesus monkeys.

Aged rhesus monkeys, like aged humans, show declines in cognitive function. We present cognitive test data from a large sample of male and female rhesus monkeys, 34 young (3.5-13.6 years) and 71 aged (19.9-32.5 years of age at the start of cognitive testing). Monkeys were tested on spatiotemporal working memory (delayed response), visual recognition memory (delayed nonmatching-to-sample), and stimulus-reward association learning (object discrimination), tasks with an extensive evidence base in nonhuman primate neuropsychology. On average, aged monkeys performed worse than young on all three ta

A study of early multilingualism in Iran: The effects of mother tongue literacy, socio-economic status and foreground TV exposure.

This study investigated interactions among linguistics, social and political factors in a linguistically rich environment. For this purpose, two-hundred Iranian preschoolers (aged 5 to 6 years old) from four ethnic/linguistic groups (Arab, Kurd, Turk and Fars) were selected using multi-stage stratified sampling. All participants took part in an Elementary English language course and their exposure to foreground TV was recorded using media exposure portfolio. Maternal education and family income were considered as criteria for socio-economic status. Children's language proficiency was measured

Memory performance used to detect radiation effects on cognitive functioning.

Although radiotherapy remains a necessary and frequently used treatmentfor brain tumors, uncertainty remains about the nature and severity of neurocognitive morbidity. We show that verbal-semantic memory (free recall of word list) is sensitive to damaging radiation effects in 20 patients with low-grade, supratentorial, primary brain tumors who received moderate doses of partial-brain irradiation. We previously reported that verbal-semantic memory is dissociated from visual memory (acquisition and recall) during the same phase ofradiation effects, indicating that memory is differentially affect

Evaluation of children with reading difficulties.

Reading difficulties are common and are associated with poor long-term academic achievement. Evaluation of a child's developmental, educational, and family histories in conjunction with standardized screening tests (e.g., Ages and Stages Questionnaires, Parents' Evaluation of Developmental Status, Safety Word Inventory and Literacy Screener) can increase recognition of risk factors for reading difficulties. Validated, office-based, standardized screening tests and school-administered standardized achievement tests (e.g., California Achievement Tests, Iowa Tests of Basic Skills, Metropolitan Ac

Taking the sublexical route: brain dynamics of reading in the semantic variant of primary progressive aphasia.

Reading aloud requires mapping an orthographic form to a phonological one. The mapping process relies on sublexical statistical regularities (e.g. 'oo' to |uː|) or on learned lexical associations between a specific visual form and a series of sounds (e.g. yacht to/jɑt/). Computational, neuroimaging, and neuropsychological evidence suggest that sublexical, phonological and lexico-semantic processes rely on partially distinct neural substrates: a dorsal (occipito-parietal) and a ventral (occipito-temporal) route, respectively. Here, we investigated the spatiotemporal features of orthography-to-p

The metabolic syndrome and cognitive decline in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study (ARIC).

BACKGROUND: Midlife metabolic syndrome (MetS) may impact cognitive health as a construct independently of hypertension, hyperlipidemia and other components. METHODS: 10,866 participants aged 45-64 years at baseline were assessed for MetS and completed cognitive testing at two later time points (3 and 9 years from the baseline visit). RESULTS: MetS is associated with increased odds of low cognitive performance in the domains of executive function and word fluency, but not with 6-year cognitive decline. Individual MetS components explained this association (hypertension, diabetes, low HDL, ele

Vulnerability to emotionally negative stimuli in Parkinson's disease: an investigation using the Emotional Stroop task.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine whether the pathophysiological changes associated with Parkinson's disease (PD) lead to an increased vulnerability to react to negative emotional stimuli and hence to depression. It is hypothesized that nondepressed PD patients will demonstrate, associated with particular PD and/or cognitive variables, vulnerability to the interfering effects of negative words on the Emotional (sad) Stroop task (EST). BACKGROUND: Depression has been reported to occur frequently in PD, but there is controversy regarding its pathophysiology: psychosocial f
